Japanese Guns in Yaren, Nauru
Though Nauru is only around 21 square kilometres, there is plenty of war history dotted around the island. You just need to know where to look!
During World War II, Nauru was occupied by Japan for around three years. The Japanese used Nauru as a stronghold and increased warfare infrastructure by building tunnels, a war prison and placing powerful guns at the top points of Nauru
Three of these guns are still present and easy to find in the wilderness on the topside of Nauru, an area known for the heavy phosphate mining and recognisable rock pinnacles caused by it.
Command Ridge Gun
To see one of the guns left over from the war, you then drive a little way down the road for phosphate trucks, you will see an unmarked gravel road to your left. Drive as far up this road as your vehicle will allow, and then walk the rest of the way, following the worn path to get there. It is quite difficult to get lost.
This gun has dents in the barrels near the top, meaning it can no longer be used effectively. You will also see a tunnel here originally used to climb inside the gun.
If you continue past the gun and clamber down amongst the pinnacles, you may find the ruins of an aircraft which was shot down during the war. However, these are harder to find and it is almost unidentifiable as an aircraft now!

Japanese torture chambers in NAURU's man-made wasteland, as it was in 2012.

(The song is Astronomy by Blue Oyster Cult, 1976). I had the privilege of being a tourist in this fascinating little remote island nation in 2012, just in time to see it before the Australian detention centre in the wasteland brought far-reaching changes. You can't even walk a bus length in the Nauru Pinnacles, I'm not kidding !! It is so close to being completely impassible that a large sector of the Australian detention centre had NO FENCE, making use of the wasteland instead...! I was given privileged access to the bleak yet tidy torture chambers carved out into the pinnacles for the genocidal Japanese occupiers in 1942-45. Please join me on an armchair exploration of a country that doubles as a morality tale....

- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

SUMMARY
=======
The Japanese occupation of Nauru was the period of three years (26 August 1942 – 13 September 1945) during which Nauru, a Pacific island under Australian administration, was occupied by the Japanese military as part of its operations in the Pacific War during World War II. With the onset of the war, the islands that flanked Japan's South Seas possessions became of vital concern to Japanese Imperial General Headquarters, and in particular to the Imperial Navy, which was tasked with protecting Japan's outlying Pacific territories. The Japanese hoped to exploit the island's phosphate resources, and to build up their military defences in the area. They were unable to relaunch phosphate mining operations, but succeeded in transforming Nauru into a powerful stronghold, which United States forces chose to bypass during their reconquest of the Pacific. The most important infrastructure built by the Japanese was an airfield, which was the target of repeated Allied air strikes.
The war deeply affected the local population. The Japanese enforced a harsh regime, particularly on Chinese labourers who they saw as being at the bottom of the racial hierarchy; forced labour and brutal treatment were commonplace. They decided to deport the majority of Nauru's indigenous population to the Truk islands, hundreds of miles away, where mortality was extremely high. Still overpopulated with troops and imported labourers, the island was subject to food shortages, which worsened as the Allies' island-hopping strategy left Nauru completely cut off.
Although effectively neutralised by Allied air and sea control, the Japanese garrison did not surrender until eleven days after the official surrender of Japan.

Notorious cargo operations in beautiful Nauru ❤️????????✨
Nauru is notorious for slow cargo operations. What takes a day in other small ports easily takes more than ten in Nauru. The reason is that Nauru does not have a sea port. In this short video I have tried to show you the process of bringing a single container on board the ship ⚓️
I am grateful to Neptune Pacific Lines for facilitating my passage on board the good ship “Capitaine Quiros” in order of reaching country number 191 within this historic journey ????????
