Curitiba Travel Guide - Brazil Unique Experience
Curitiba is the capital of Paraná, Brazil. If you're heading for Iguaçu Falls from Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo, it's worth stopping by for a day or two. Curitiba is one of the largest cities in the prosperous Southern region, and its population is largely descended from German, Ukrainian, Russian, Italian and Polish immigrants. The city is known to urban planners worldwide for its innovative public transit system.
There is a great cidade velha (old city) in the center which was restored very well for its 319 years, but unfortunately much of it is covered in graffiti and only a few of the buildings are aesthetically pleasing as a result. There is a huge arts and crafts fair every Sunday in the old city that is well worth visiting.Curitiba has a very simple and practical transportation system. Public transportation consists entirely of buses. There are several different types of bus, each with a different function.
Driving can be difficult for those who are not used to the traffic in Curitiba, especially for first comers. In the central area, there are many one-way streets, parking restrictions as well as pedestrian-only and bus-only streets. Bus lanes are very common in Curitiba, as the city has over 60 km (38 miles) of them. Most avenues are wide and have spacious sidewalks and they are mostly laid out in a grid system in the city center area.
Many visitors from outside Brazil are not prepared to feel cold in this tropical country. This is precisely the case in Curitiba, located off from the tropic parallel, and elevated by an altitude of almost 1000 meters above the sea level. Curitiba has a good variety of restaurants, ranging from modest to upscale restaurants. Note that the downtown (centro) area caters mainly to the business lunch crowd, and is very quiet at night with many restaurants closed. On Sundays nearly all bars and restaurants are closed downtown.
Curitiba has also taken innovative approaches to urban ills such as homelessness, pollution and poverty, and it’s now the envy of urban planners the world over and the country's most efficient city. With its abundant green spaces, sophisticated population and well-heeled infrastructure, this is a good spot to recharge your batteries and enjoy Brazil at its functioning best.

The way to New York Harbor through the Statue of Liberty. I stopped at Ellis Island where I was the first US federal immigration officer. After immigration was established in 1892, about 12 million immigrants were admitted here. Immigrants have received a medical examination and a document inspection of their doctors, and they have made the screening of those who have traveled on the trestle more strict than those who have been in first class. The bag that the immigrants packed had their willingness to succeed in their entire estate and opportunity. About 40% of Americans now are descendants of immigrants who came to New York through Ellis Island. Now, after finishing the ceremony of New York trip, we enter the concrete jungle in earnest.

Santos, is a municipality in the Brazilian state of São Paulo and was founded in 1546 by the Portuguese nobleman Brás Cubas. It is partially located on the island of São Vicente, which harbours both the city of Santos and the city of São Vicente, and partially on the mainland. The city is also home to the Coffee Museum, where world coffee prices were once negotiated. But there is more to Santos than that, a football memorial dedicated to the city's greatest players, which includes Pelé, who played for the Santos Futebol Clube, and the beachfront garden that figures in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest beachfront garden in the world, are among other sites worth paying a visit.

It was the exportation of coffee from the Port of Santos that gave rise to the city and mostly accounted for the wealth of the city at the turn of the 20th century. Exportation and importation through its port have made it the modern city one finds today and turned it into the indispensable outlet for the production of the powerhouse that is São Paulo State. Adorning the landscape of the port city are the canals that are over a hundred years old, and in 1924, it became the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Santos.
Santos became a tourist city from the start of the 1900-hundreds and onwards, with the construction of the International Hotel and Parque Balneário and the construction of the beach front gardens in 1935. Still today tourism in Santos is one of the main economic activities, mainly linked to beaches and historical heritage. And in October 2006, light crude oil was discovered off the coast in the Santos basin.

German Brazilian
A German Brazilian is a Brazilian person of ethnic German ancestry or origin. German Brazilians live mostly in the country's South Region, with lesser but still significant degree in the Southeast Region. German dialects together make up the second most spoken first language in Brazil after Portuguese. A few Brazilian municipalities have Brazilian Hunsrückisch and Germanic Pomeranian as co-official with Portuguese. They are located in Southern Brazil and Espírito Santo. According to a 2000 research, there were 5 million people of German descent living in Brazil. Brazil is home to the second largest German-Austrian population outside their respective nations, after the USA.
Between 1824 and 1972, about 260,000 Germans settled in Brazil; the fifth largest nationality to immigrate to Brazil, after the Portuguese, the Italians, the Spaniards, and the Japanese.

Demographics of Brazil
Brazil's population is very diverse, comprising many races and ethnic groups. In general, Brazilians trace their origins from four sources: Amerindians, Europeans, Africans and Asians.
Brazil has conducted a periodical population census since 1872. Since 1940, this census has been carried out decennially. Scanned versions of the forms for each census distributed in Brazil since 1960 are available on-line from IPUMS International.
