SE2 - 15, El Este National Park, Dominican Republic
Season 2, Episode 15 … After the weather window closed in on us, we decided to delay our passage to Samana on the Northern Coast. So we had a chance to explore the Southern Coast of the DR for a couple more days. We anchored just off of El Este National Park and explored the area by dingy and enjoyed our time there playing in the crystal clear waters of this National Park.
It's times like this that we are glad that we are not on a time frame or have any final destination in mind. We did not set out on this life style to sail around the world or only go for a year or two. When we left, in October 2015, we said we were going to sail as long as we were having fun. We didn't want to stress ourselves out with time frames or destinations.... This was a place we would have never stayed if we were on a timeframe, we would have continued North to Samana under not so comfortable (not unsafe, just uncomfortable) weather conditions to stay on schedule.
I hope you enjoy our videos and subscribe to our family's YouTube channel to see all of our cruising adventures.

Feeding Rhinoceros iguana at Laguna Oviedo (Jaragua National Park, Dominican Republic)
Rhinoceros iguana is a friendly and curious specimen. And they like cherries very much if you feed them. I said hello to them in November 2019 on one of the islands of Laguna Oviedo in the Jaragua National Parque in the Southwest of the island.

Amazed by Los Tres Ojos, thrilled by Santo Domingo the Dominican Republic
Santo Domingo the capital of the Dominican Republic pleasantly surprised us It's beautiful colonial architecture mixed with the modern structures added to the quaintness of the place. We were thrilled by the Three Eyes National Park or as it is locally known Los Tres Ojos.
The Dominican Republic was our first stop on this cruise and we awoke already docked in the capital city of Santo Domingo.
The first look we got of the city was amazing because the sun was now rising and its golden rays kissed the city and presented it majestically.

Protect the Dominican Republic’s mangrove forests
For nearly 50 years, Earth Day has brought together communities around the world to protect our planet and raise awareness about what threatens it. This year, you can mark the occasion by directly supporting projects that protect mangroves--key players in the fight against rising CO2 levels--in the Dominican Republic.
We want to raise $10,000 to expand three projects in the Caribbean island nation. Each of them involves coastal communities and local NGOs protecting important mangrove habitats around the country by developing mangrove ecotourism. This both protects the threatened mangrove forests and gives local youth a way to make a living without overfishing, logging, or working on unsustainable coastal development. Each project has already made great progress; this additional support will let them make an even bigger impact.
-At Samaná Bay, Seacology funded a boardwalk through a mangrove forest for birdwatching and other ecotourism activities. The crowdfunding campaign will let us fund a visitors’ center and a bridge, for better access during the wet season.
-At Montecristi Province, Seacology is supporting a nascent kayak tourism operation staffed by local teenagers, who receive environmental education, guide training, and sustainable employment. The additional money we raise will buy more life vests and a trailer for transporting the kayaks.
-At Oviedo Lagoon, part of Jaragua National Park, our project helped upgrade boats used for ecotourism and strengthened enforcement of environmental regulations. Additional funds will go toward buying life vests and producing waterproof wildlife-identification materials, to help the guides educate guests about the many birds and other animals in the area.
Contribute $25 or more to the campaign, and we’ll acknowledge you in our winter Island Update newsletter and 2019 annual report. Feeling even more generous? We have some great Seacology merchandise available as a thank-you to higher-level donors.
Last year, supporters of first crowdfunding campaign provided the funds needed for our project to save parrotfish on Providencia Island in Colombia. We’ve decided to make an Earth Day fundraiser a tradition, giving our supporters a chance to directly contribute to projects.
We look forward to updating you on the progress of these three important Dominican Republic projects, and hope you’ll consider being a part of the community of supporters behind them. You can learn more and contribute at seacology.org/ecotourism.Thanks!
