Jarlshof from Above
This short computer generated film by Kieran Baxter tells the story of settlement at Jarlshof in the Shetland Islands. The film is based on aerial photographs taken from a kite-suspended camera with special permission for kite flying in such close proximity to Sumburgh Airport. The project was supported by Historic Scotland, who manage the site, and completed at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, University of Dundee. Speculative reconstructions of lost buildings are based on kite aerial photographs from a number of other sites across Scotland - including Mousa Broch - and were completed in collaboration with Alice Watterson, Glasgow School of Art. The film is now on display in the museum at Jarlshof where it can be seen to full effect accompanied by an exploration of the site itself. More of the story and images behind the project can be found at topofly.com/jarlshof .

Scandinavian Scotland refers to the period from the 8th to the 15th centuries during which Vikings and Norse settlers, mainly Norwegians and to a smaller extent other Scandinavians, and their descendents colonised parts of what is now the periphery of modern Scotland.Viking influence in the area commenced in the late 8th century, and hostility between the Scandinavian Earls of Orkney and the emerging thalassocracy of the Kingdom of the Isles, the rulers of Ireland, Dál Riata and Alba, and intervention by the crown of Norway were recurring themes.Scandinavian-held territories included the Northern Isles of Orkney and Shetland, the Hebrides, the islands of the Firth of Clyde and associated mainland territories including Caithness and Sutherland. The historical record from Scottish sources is weak, with the Irish annals and the later Norse sagas, of which the Orkneyinga Saga is the principal source of information, sometimes contradictory although modern archaeology is beginning to provide a broader picture of life during this period.

Kayaking from Sandwick to Mousa Island, seal pups and ancient ruins
Kayaking from Sandwick to Mousa Island, where we found a few very cute seal pups and visited the Mousa Broch. Parts of the structure are about 2000 years old and that'e very impressive. It stood through the centuries unmoved by wind, rain and any kind of bad weather that the Shetland Islands can offer.
The island itself is pretty small, just few km across and its name means the moss island in Norsk if I remember correctly. It doesn't seem to be visited very often and probably that's why seal pups can be seen laying around.
When we were about to leave the shore and to continue a bit more around the islands, so we can see the caves too, one of the guys (who was going out in the see with kayak for first time in his life) capsized about 50 m into the sea and I had to drag him out of the water. However he didn't have wetsuit or any kind of protection and after been submerged fully he spend some more time in the 3 C degrees water and when he got back in his kayak he proceeded to paddle in the wet clothes another hour until we got to the mainland. Now I am thinking if this happened in the middle between the two cosasts he would've been in big trouble, I just don't see an easy way to get him back in the kayak or to drag him through 3-4 km of icy water.
So, the day was pretty interesting
