JULIETTE, Georgia. (41NBC/WMGT) - Over 100 years ago, farms and plantations were scattered across the southeast. Middle Georgia had its fair share of plantations, too. A cotton plantation in Juliette was popular in the community during the 1800's and is now being preserved by the state of Georgia.

Dating back to 1847, through generations of family members, Jarrell Plantation Historic Site is one of the last remaining examples of a vanishing culture with its authentic nineteenth and early twentieth century plantation buildings typical to Middle Georgia representing the change from an agricultural to an industrial based economy.
Nestled in the red clay hills of Georgia, this cotton plantation was owned by a single family for more than 140 years. It survived Gen. Sherman’s “March to the Sea,” typhoid fever, the cotton boll weevil, the advent of steam power and a transition from farming to forestry.
In 1847, John Fitz Jarrell built a simple heart pine house typical of most plantations and made many of the furnishings visitors see today. In 1860, the 600-acre plantation was farmed by 39 slaves. After the Civil War, John increased his land to nearly 1,000 acres farmed by former slaves. As John aged, most workers left and the slave houses deteriorated and disappeared.
After John’s death, his son, Dick Jarrell, gave up teaching to return to the farm, and in 1895, he built a small house for his family that grew to 12 children. Dick diversified the farm, adding a sawmill, cotton gin, gristmill, shingle mill, planer, sugar cane press, syrup evaporator, workshop, barn and outbuildings. In 1974, his descendants donated these buildings to establish Jarrell Plantation Historic Site.

Whistle Stop Cafe, Juliette, Georgia, United States, North America
The 1991 Film directed by John Avnet starring Kathy Bates, Jessica Tandy, Mary Stuart Masterson Mary Louise-Parker, Chris O'Donnell and other well knowns... was filmed in Juliette GA. The Whistle Stop Cafe building was built in 1927 by Edward L. Williams, Sr. He ran a general merchandise store there for 45 years and finally closed the doors for good in 1972 simply stating, I have had enough.
While in business, the store sold groceries, staples, gasoline, cattle feed, medicines, clothing and hardware. In Mr. Williams words, everything from the cradle to the grave. He called everyone Cuz and was known to roll the dice to see who paid for the Coca-Colas™
Mrs. Williams, known to most as Miss Lillian, helped run the store and also raised five boys and a girl. All of the children helped in the store until they went off to school or to the service. The store was probably one the last of it's kind that delivered the groceries and also allowed folks to charge them; keeping a running tab. An antique file system loaded with old yellow tickets from the past along with the meat block, cash register, meat scales, wood heater, safe, and other smaller items remain in the cafe today. The store was rented out for a while as a timber consultant/real estate office and then as an antique shop before the filming of Fried Green Tomatoes. The store played a major role as The Whistle Stop Cafe. After the filming, Robert Williams, who had inherited the building, decided to make it into a real cafe and formed a partnership with friend Jerie Lynn Williams. Together they started the Original Whistle Stop Cafe.

Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation
This video is from a recent trip to a Georgia State Historical Site: the 'Hofwyl-Broadfield' plantation. This was a rice plantation from 1806 and stayed in the same family for over 160 years. This was shot in early November 2017...a cool cloudy day. I am using a Canon Vixia HF G40 with just the default settings since this is a new camera for me. Video editing was done with Cyberlink PowerDirector 16 and sounds effects produced with Mixcraft 7 Pro. I did the narration. I hope you enjoy the video..and will subscribe to my channel for new video's in the future. If you have questions I will be glad to try to answer. Comments should be 'G-rated'.
