Maytag Park in Newton, Iowa
In 1935, Fred L. Maytag purchased a 40-acre tract of land (formerly the Jasper County Fairgrounds) with the vision of developing a park that would be the finest and best equipped parks to be found in the state of Iowa. Between 1935 and 1937 brought that vision to life with a swimming pool and bathhouse, Maytag Bowl amphitheater, picnic areas, tennis courts, playground and a house for the park superintendent. Maytag's park, a gift to city, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and continues to be a source of rest and relaxation for the people of Newton.
Maytag Park is one of the many preservation projects undertaken by the city of Newton, the host of this year's Preserve Iowa Summit. Join us June 6-8 to learn about a broad range of preservation topics. New this year: Preservationists and others working in local history may attend Saturday’s sessions for just $15. Visit preserveiowasummit.org for details.

Iowa woman buys real-life haunted mansion and MOVES IT across town... but did the ghosts go too?

An Iowa woman took her haunted house on a real-life ghost tour this week.
Sherri Meeker recently bought the 150-year-old Newton property, dubbed 'The Haunted Mansion of Jasper County' by locals because of its marked reputation for being occupied by evil spirits.
But because of weak ground conditions, she decided to uproot the wooden structure, which resembles Freddie Krueger's favorite haunt in A Nightmare on Elm Street, and on Tuesday moved it to another, more sturdy, part of town.
Meeker, who doesn't believe the ghoulish stories, said she plans on renovating the mansion, restoring it to its former glory.
'It was built in 1865. It's the oldest wood frame historical house in Jasper County,' Billy Bell, who was working on the move, told KCCI.com.
The news station spent a night in the haunted house, known as Maple Grove Hill, back in 1994.
