villoondi theertham rameswaram
It is in Rameswaram, this was created with lord Rama shot an arrow to get fresh water from the sea to quench his wife Sita’s thirst. Located about 7 km from the Ramanathaswamy Temple, this place offers some stunningly beautiful and dramatic views of the sea. Incidentally, the place is named Villondi or 'buried bow' as it is believed to be the place where Lord Rama buried his bow and arrow. A long platform leads you to this holy well and it is magical to walk on it as you see the sea from both the sides. The water in the well is quite mysteriously sweet in spite of being surrounded by salt sea water all around and devotees believe it will do them good if they take a sip of this holy water. There is a small temple like structure adjoining this place and as you stand at the edge of the platform, you can see statues of gods and goddesses in the water bed. The sight is quite fascinating, just like the place itself.

Rameswaram temple is known as the holiest hindu char dham and situated on Pamban Island also known as Rameswaram Island, which is about 40 kms from Mannar Island, Sri Lanka. Ramesawara is one of the twelve jyotirlingas, dedicated to Lord Shiva also known as primary deity Ramanathaswamy. There are two lingams inside the sanctum. One Shiv linga made from sand was built by Sita which is placed as the main deity in the temple known as Ramalingam and the second was brought by Lord Hanuman from Kailash known as Vishwalinga. As per traditional belief, Lord Rama instructed to first worship the Vishwaling, as Lord Hanuman brought it, and this tradition continues even today.
The temple has high compound wall on all four sides. Temple site is built on 15 acres of land at 10 metres above sea level. The current structure of temple was built by Pandya dynasty. Temple has the longest corridor among the all Hindu temples. The height of columned corridor is 25 feet. The structure of pillar is similar to Madurai Meenakshi Amman temple.
There are sixty four tirthas or theerthams (temple tanks) in and around the Rameswaram temple. As per the Skanda Purana, twenty four theerthams are most important and bathing in these theerthams is very auspicious and equivalent to penance. There are twenty two theerthams inside the temple and this number indicates to Rama's arrows in his quiver. Agni teertham, the sea (Bay of Bengal) is the first and major teertham. Then there is Jatayu theertham, named after Jatayu, who fought with the demon king Ravana to save goddess Sita, and had his wings severed. Villoondi theertham, is located around 7 km from the main temple on the way to Pamban. Other holy bodies are Hanuman therrtham, Sugreeva theertham and Lakshmana theertham.
Popular Stories
A king ruling this region prayed to Lord Shiva for the boon of a child boon and performed a yajna. Through His voice, Lord assured the king that Ambica would be his daughter. When the king set out hunting, he found four female children, and brought them up as his own daughters. They were Shiva devotees by their very nature. When they attained age, the king begged the Lord to marry them. The Lord was happy to grant the king's wish. They are the Ambicas in four places - Sarivar Kuzhali in this temple, Vaaitha Tirukuzhal Nayaki in Tiruchengattangudi, Karundhar Kuzhali in Tirupugalur and Vandar Kuzhali in Tirumarugal.
They also bear the common name Shoolikambal as they helped a poor pregnant woman deliver her child during absence of her mother, who was stuck at the other bank of the river due to heavy floods. Shool or Karu in Tamil means pregnancy.
Karu Katha Ambica is other name of the Mother in the temple.
As Ambicas returned late, they could not enter the temple. Mother shrines are outside temples in these four places. During the Arthajama pujas (final night pujas) samba rice with pepper, seeragam, salt and ghee is offered as Nivedhana, a diet prescribed for mothers after delivery.
The temple and the island of Rameswaram have acquired this name because Lord Rama worshipped Lord Shiva here on return from Sri Lanka. According to legend, after killing Ravana Lord Rama returned with his consort Goddess Sita to India first stepping on the shores of Rameswaram. To expiate the dosha of killing a brahmin, some sages advised Lord Rama to worship Lord Shiva to get rid of the sin of killing a Brahmin.
For worshipping Lord Shiva, Rama needed a Shivlingam and since there was no shivlingam at that place, Rama instructed Hanuman to bring Shivlingam from Kailash (the holy abode of Lord Shiva). When Hanuman reached Kailsh parvat, he started worshipping Lord Shiva in order to please him and get Shivlingam in return. Meanwhile Hanuman was doing penance to please Lord Shiva, Lord Rama was worried as the puja time was approaching closer.
Seeing Lord Rama worried, Mata Sita made a Shivlingam made of sand and established the Shivlingam there and Lord Rama started worshiping the Shivling made by Sita.
When Hanuman returned with shivlingam from Kailash, he got disappointed as he saw Lord Rama already worshipping another Shivlingam. Lord Rama consoled him and established the Shivlingam brought by Hanuman near the Shivlingam made by Sita. Ram compromise hanuman and told that It is announced by me, the first pooja should be done here after to the Shiva linga that you brought and after that only the poojas and sacraments done for the Shivalinga worshiped by me. It is believed as per words of Lord Rama the first pooja starts from Vishwanathar lingam till date (the Shiva linga brought by Hanuman is named as Vishwanathar)
