Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge Cruise, Northern Territory | Video Review - The Big Bus
Welcome to The Big Bus tour and travel guide's YouTube channel.
In this video, we head to Nitmiluk National Park in the Northern Territory to join Nitmiluk Tours on their famous Nitmiluk Gorge cruise.
Once known as Katherine Gorge, Nitmiluk Gorge is actually a series of twelve gorges. We visit gorges one and two on our cruise, with a short 400-metre walk in between. Along the way, we learn about the significance of the gorge to the traditional owners — the Jawoyn people — from our local guide.
This is without doubt one of the most spectacular pieces of Australian wilderness. Enjoy!

Leliyn trail around Edith falls in Nitmiluk National Park, NT, Australia
During our stay in Katherine we want to explore the area as much as possible. For that reason we visit a place nearby every day off we have.
The Nitmiluk National Park
Last week we went to the Edith Falls in the Nitmiluk National Park. It is a beautiful place to visit and there is no entrance fee for the park. In the 3,1 km loop you'll pass two places with the possibility to swim. A really nice way to cool down after a hot hike!
Leliyn trail
The Leliyn trail starts from the parking lot. Here you can also find a toilet and a little kiosk. When you follow the signs the loop brings you right back at the car park. According to the information brochures the loop is about 2,6 km, but including the look out points it is around 3,1 km.
The trail is easy to follow, as the signs are all designated along the path. Our advise is to wear some proper shoes, as it is quite rocky! We have seen some people on flipflops, but we were very happy to have our boots on our feet. Nevertheless the hike is an easy one. Even people with a physical ability below average are able to accomplish the trail.
Swimming
As said before there are two places to swim. The Plunge pool, which is just a few hundred meters from the parking lot and the upper pool. The Plunge pool is bigger and the upper pool is less crowded.
The water is a bit chilly, but after a hot hike it is a really good way to cool down! The water is very clean, but the stones are a bit slippery. So if you have some water shoes, bring them! Anyway, we survived without them.
You don't have to be afraid of crocodiles. The guards of the park cleared the area before opening the park for tourism. While the park is open there are set multiple traps, so it is almost impossible for a croc to get into the touristy area. The guards do their rounds a couple of times a day. So don't be afraid, but relax and enjoy!

Jatbula
Over Easter 2015, I attempted the Jatbula Trail in the Northern Territory, Australia. This is my solo adventure, recorded with my iPhone. I hadn't tried this walk before, and attempted it well before the hiking season started. Please be aware there is some minor course language and some footage of me in my underwear. Enjoy!
What it's like trekking the Jatbula Trail
Ever considered walking along the Jatbula Trail?
This breathtaking Top End adventure is one of the most popular walking trails with our travellers. Spend your mornings walking between 10-15kms each day, with afternoons relaxing by the crystal clear waterholes along the trail.
The Arnhem Land escarpment is an exceptional wilderness area which winds its way along the edge of Katherine Gorge (Nitmiluk) to Edith Falls (Leliyn) creating a truly extraordinary hiking experience. The Jatbula Trail in the Nitmilik National Park features magnificent waterfalls tumbling from high quartzite cliffs where shady monsoon forests line the creeks and stunning Jawoyn Aboriginal rock art adorns the caves and overhangs.
This full pack carrying bushwalk traverses the heart of this amazing part of Australia. You will trek during the cooler months to ensure the best experience of the tropical environment. With crystal-clear creeks throughout, there are abundant opportunities for swimming and just relaxing in the warm croc-free waters.
Combine this trek with a Katherine River Canoe Expedition for the complete Top End wilderness experience.
