Thomas Jefferson and the Empire of the Imagination
(Visit: Thomas Jefferson had a vision for the United States of America but race and slavery complicated his views of what kind of society was possible on the American continent. One of the foremost scholars on Jefferson, Pulitzer prize winner Annette Gordon-Reed is a professor of American Legal History at Harvard University.

Most Blessed of the Patriarchs: Thomas Jefferson and the Empire of the Imagination
Thomas Jefferson’s actions and ideas still divide Americans two centuries later. Annette Gordon-Reed, winner of the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award for The Hemingses of Monticello, and Peter Onuf, the Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation Professor of History, emeritus, at the University of Virginia, provide new insights into Jefferson’s views on Christianity, slavery, race, and philosophy. A book signing will follow the program.

American Artifacts Preview: George Washington's Garden
Since January 2005, there has been an effort to restore George Washington's Upper Garden at Mount Vernon to its 1799 appearance. We visited Mount Vernon, and spoke with special collections librarian Michele Lee, director of archeology Esther White, and director of horticulture Dean Norton.
First, we heard from Michele Lee about several documents in Mount Vernon's collection -- some in Washington's own hand -- that provide a glimpse into Washington's gardening practices.
From the library, we moved out to the Upper Garden where archeologist Esther White and horticulturist Dean Norton walked us through the work they directed in the garden's reinterpretation.
George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens is open every day of the year.

Riding the nice, large faux-stone elevator at the Texas Capitol Complex Visitor's Center with DieselDucy, and even though it's nice, with the dry-powered Chewbacca Motor, I think mixing the stone with wood walls & CJ Anderson fixtures would have made this elevator much nicer.
About this building, the Texas Capitol Visitor's Center also served as the 1st Texas General Land Commissioner's Office, and was built in the mid-1850's. But then with a museum being added, the elevator was added around 40-50 years later, and then was renovated into the current visitor's center in the early-mid 1990's.
USA / Caribbean - Hurricanes
(28 Sep 2017) STORYLINE
On August 28th 2017 the shelter set up inside the George R. Brown Convention Center in downtown Houston has already reached half its capacity.
Ken Sandy, a shelter manager for the American Red Cross, said that more than 2,600 people took shelter in the George R. Brown Convention Center.
Organisers with the Red Cross estimate the building can accommodate roughly 5,000 people.
Sandy says the shelter is currently out of cots and waiting for more to arrive.
With Tropical Storm Harvey still pouring rain on the Houston area, thousands more people are expected to need to evacuate their homes.
The Red Cross has also set up other shelters throughout the area.

On August 28th 2017 volunteers are out in force on the flooded roads of Spring, Texas to help rescue residents stranded in their homes after Hurricane Harvey.
***
Aerial footage shot over southeast Houston and over Deer Park, Texas - an industrial corridor about 18 miles southeast of downtown Houston - showed a devastating sight left behind by Tropical Storm Harvey on August 29th.
Forecasters say heavy rains are continuing to spread over southeastern Texas and southern Louisiana.
The rains in Cedar Bayou, near Mont Belvieu, Texas, reached 51.88 inches (132 centimeters) as of 3:30 p.m. CDT. That's a record for both Texas and the continental United States but it doesn't quite pass the 52 inches (133 centimeters) from tropical cyclone Hiki in Kauai, Hawaii, in 1950 (before Hawaii became a state).

Aerial footage shows flooding from tropical storm Harvey in various cities across the US state of Texas.
A block-by block search of thousands of flooded homes began in Houston on August 31st to look for anyone who might have been left behind in floodwaters, while rescues continued apace.
Fire officials said the searches could take one to two weeks to complete because tens of thousands of homes were flooded after more than 4 feet of rain submerged many neighborhoods in the nation's fourth-largest city.
Harris County, which includes Houston, reports that nearly 30,000 homes suffered minor damage and nearly 12,000 have major damage.
Jefferson County, which includes Port Arthur and Beaumont, reports that 5,500 homes were destroyed and 16,000 others sustained major damage in areas where officials have warned that flooding could continue for days.

The International Space Station's external cameras captured a dramatic view of Hurricane Irma as it moved across the Atlantic Ocean on September 5th.
The National Hurricane Center had recently upgraded Irma to a Category 5 storm with hurricane warnings issued across the Caribbean.

Visitors to the Florida Keys have been told they must leave under a mandatory evacuation order as Hurricane Irma approached the eastern US state.
Residents must evacuate starting on September 6th under Monroe County's mandatory order.
The evacuations were causing major traffic delays as Hurricane Irma, a Category 5 monster with potentially catastrophic winds of 185 miles per hour (298 kilometres per hour), steamed toward the Sunshine State.
The most powerful hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic destroyed homes and flooded streets as it roared through a chain of small islands in the northern Caribbean.
Meteorologists said Irma could hit the Miami area by early Sunday, then rake the entire length of the state and push into the Carolinas.
But they warned that the forecast this far out contains a large degree of uncertainty.
***
Many residents of Barbuda on September 8th left for Antigua to escape another tropical storm in the wake of hurricane Irma, which already devastated a string of Caribbean islands, killing at least 20 people.
Hurricane Jose has now become an extremely dangerous Category 4 hurricane.

Gateway Arch Experience in St. Louis, Missouri
Gateway Arch National Park, formerly known as the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial until 2018, is an American national park located in St. Louis, Missouri, near the starting point of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The Gateway Arch and its immediate surroundings were initially designated as a national memorial by executive order on December 21, 1935, and redesignated as a national park in 2018. The park is maintained by the National Park Service (NPS).
The memorial was established to commemorate:
the Louisiana Purchase, and the subsequent westward movement of American explorers and pioneers;
the first civil government west of the Mississippi River; and
the debate over slavery raised by the Dred Scott case.
The national park consists of the Gateway Arch, a steel catenary arch that has become the definitive icon of St. Louis; a 91-acre (36.8 ha) park along the Mississippi River on the site of the earliest buildings of the city; the Old Courthouse, a former state and federal courthouse where the Dred Scott case originated; and the 140,000 sq ft (13,000 m2) museum at the Gateway Arch.
The Gateway Arch:
The Gateway Arch, known as the Gateway to the West, is the tallest structure in Missouri. It was designed by Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen and structural engineer Hannskarl Bandel in 1947 and built between 1963 and October 1965. It stands 630 feet (192 m) tall and 630 feet (192 m) wide at its base. The legs are 54 feet (16.5 m) wide at the base, narrowing to 17 feet (5.2 m) at the arch. There is a unique tram system to carry passengers to the observation room at the top of the arch.
Old Courthouse:
The Old Courthouse is built on land originally deeded by St. Louis founder Auguste Chouteau. It marks the location over which the arch reaches. Its dome was built during the American Civil War and is similar to the dome on the United States Capitol which was also built during the Civil War. It was the site of the local trials in the Dred Scott case.
The courthouse is the only portion of the memorial west of Interstate 44. To the west of the Old Courthouse is a Greenway between Market and Chestnut Streets which is only interrupted by the Civil Courts Building which features a pyramid model of the Mausoleum of Mausolus (which was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World) on its roof. When the Civil Courts building was built in the 1920s, the Chouteau family sued to regain the property belonging to the Old Courthouse because it had been deeded in perpetuity to be a courthouse.
Museum at the Gateway Arch:
Underneath the arch is a visitor center, entered from a circular entryway facing the Old Courthouse. Within the center, a project to rebuild the Museum at the Gateway Arch was completed in July 2018. The new museum features exhibits on a variety of topics including westward expansion and the construction of the arch, all told through a St. Louis lens. Tucker Theater, finished in 1968 and renovated 30 years later, has about 285 seats and shows a documentary (Monument to the Dream) on the arch's construction. A second theater was added in 1993 but removed in 2018 as part of the CityArchRiver renovation project. Also located in the visitor center are a gift shop and cafe.
Tram Ride to the Top:
Getting there is part of the adventure.
Gaze at over 43,000 tons of concrete and steel making an iconic, elegant arc 63 stories high into the Midwest sky. Shaped by the inspired design of Finnish-America architect Eero Saarinen, the Gateway Arch celebrates the westward expansion of the United States and the pioneers who made it possible. Since its completion in 1965, the monument has taken millions of visitors on the trip to the top to enjoy stunning views stretching up to 30 miles to the east and west.
Old Courthouse:
Landmark in Every Sense of the Word
Walk the halls where ordinary Americans made civil rights history. Built in 1839, the Old Courthouse is a prime example of mid-19th century federal architecture. But it is two landmark cases that secure its place in history.
Beginning in 1847, the enslaved Dred Scott twice sued for his and his wife Harriet’s freedom. But, the U.S. Supreme Court decided against them, ruling that African-Americans were not citizens and had no right to sue. In 1873, St. Louis suffragette Virginia Minor and her husband filed a civil suit arguing for women’s right to vote. Although their suit was denied, they brought great attention to the fight for voting rights for all U.S. citizens.
As Goes Jefferson County so Goes Colo.? Candidates Make Case
Jefferson County, Colo., is comprised of one-third Democrats, one-third Republicans, and those who have yet to decide whether they will vote for Mitt Romney or President Obama. As one of the most populous purple counties in Colorado, both candidates have become repeat visitors, hoping to swing some votes. Gwen Ifill reports.

the 4th largest city in the US. Video focuses on the downtown area of the city and passes by a number of popular attractions and points of interest. Enjoy! Tag your favorite spots in the comments below! Houston is the most populous city in the U.S. state of Texas, fourth most populous city in the United States, as well as the sixth most populous in North America, with an estimated 2018 population of 2.3 million residents. Houston is the principal city of the Greater Houston metropolitan area, which is the fifth most populous metropolitan statistical area in the United States and the second most populous in Texas after the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, with a population of 7 million in 2018. Comprising a total area of 637.4 square miles (1,651 km2), Houston is the eighth most expansive city in the United States (including consolidated city-counties). It is the largest city in the United States by total area, whose government is similarly not consolidated with that of a county or borough. The arrival of the 20th century saw a convergence of economic factors which fueled rapid growth in Houston, including a burgeoning port and railroad industry, the decline of Galveston as Texas' primary port following a 1900 hurricane, the subsequent construction of the Houston Ship Channel, and the Texas oil boom. In the mid-20th century, Houston's economy diversified as it became home to the Texas Medical Center—the world's largest concentration of healthcare and research institutions—and NASA's Johnson Space Center, where the Mission Control Center is located. Houston's economy since the late-20th century has a broad industrial base in energy, manufacturing, aeronautics, and transportation. Leading in healthcare sectors and building oilfield equipment, Houston has the second most Fortune 500 headquarters of any U.S. municipality within its city limits (after New York City). The Port of Houston ranks first in the United States in international waterborne tonnage handled and second in total cargo tonnage handled. Nicknamed the Space City and H-Town, Houston has become a global city, with strengths in culture, medicine, and research. The city has a population from various ethnic and religious backgrounds and a large and growing international community. Houston is the most diverse metropolitan area in Texas and has been described as the most racially and ethnically diverse major metropolis in the U.S. It is home to many cultural institutions and exhibits, which attract more than 7 million visitors a year to the Museum District. Houston has an active visual and performing arts scene in the Theater District and offers year-round resident companies in all major performing arts.
