At a distance of 500 m from Lava Jeep Stand, Kagyu Thekchen Ling Monastery is a Buddhist monastery situated in the picturesque Himalayan hamlet of Lava in West Bengal. Popularly called as Lava Monastery, it is one of the top places to visit in Lava.
Kagyu Thekchen Ling monastery was built in 1987 by the third Kongtrul Rinpoche, Karma Lodro Chokyi Senge, when the Buddhist community living here offered him three acres of land for the local community of Lava. Though the monastery started off with a mere handful of monks, over time, the numbers kept increasing and today, it houses over 110 monks. Today, the fourth Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche studies and trains here. One can see the monks are occupied in rigorous study of Buddhist literatures and meditation.
Built in Tibetan style of architecture, the monastery has various prayer halls, lawns, sitting areas and a huge Buddha statue. The monastery offers great view of the mountains and one can also see Aritar in Sikkim as well as the Jelep La pass from the monastery. Outside the main gate is the market with hotels, eateries and shops where you can purchase clothes, souvenirs etc.

Neora Valley Rachela Trek - Trailer
The Rachela pass at an elevation of 3152 M, is virtually the tri-junction of Sikkim, Bhutan, and Bengal. In the past Rachela was the focal point for trade routes standing at the treeless tri-junction, you see the old mule trails and four major ridges dividing the valleys of Neora, Rishi, Jaldhaka and Rangli. Both the Chola Range and the Singalila with Mount Khangchendzonga are visible, including the passes of Chola, Nathula and Jelepla, opening into Tibet. This 5 days Neora Valley or Rache la trek will take you to an unexplored Himalayan forest in Neora Valley National Park, Kalimpong. The Rachela trek or Neora Valley Trek goes through the uninhabited virgin tracks of sub-tropical alpine forest. The Neora valley presents a rare varity of wildlife, ranging from the Himalayan Black Bear, Red Panda and even tigers. Rachela trek is also called Neoravalley trek. Trekking in Neoravalley is like a jungle trek in Himalaya.

GeographyEdit
Pedong lies 20 km east of Kalimpong on the way to Lava at an altitude of 1,240 metres (4.071 feet). The town, which is located on a ridge, commands a panoramic view of the Kanchenjunga and the Himalayan mountains. The town is divided into two parts, Upper Pedong and Lower Pedong. Pedong lies on the historic Silk Road that connects India to Lhasa via the Jelepla Pass.
PlacesEdit
Near Pedong are the ruins of Damsang Gadi, a historical fort built in 1690 AD by the Lepchas. It was at the centre of the long-standing feud with the Dukpas of Bhutan. Later, it was used to ward off the forces of the British East India Company. After the Anglo-Bhutan War of 1864 AD, the fort fell into decay. The Damsang fort (Damsang Gadi) is the only fort in the entire district of Darjeeling. It was home to the last Lepcha King- Gyabo Achuk as the Lepcha people are the real natives of this place.
Another highlight of the town is the Cross Hill, placed by priest Fr. Augustine Desgodins in 1882 AD on his way to Tibet. In the Tibet Mission a lot of Evangelists lost their lives or never came back from Tibet. Fr. Augustine Desgodins in due memory of them erected a cross at a vantage point facing Tibet directly with a hope that someday the evangelists may return. It is considered to have miraculous powers and is a pilgrimage site for the local Christians. The Cross Hill is located at such a point wherein the view of the facing mountains is magnificent. From here one can get a glimpse of Tibet or now the The peoples Republic of Chinese border. It is a perfect sunset point.
Sangchen Dorjee Monastery is one of the oldest monastery in Pedong-Kalimpong region and was built during the Bhutanese rule. This Monastery was established around the early 1700 AD. It provides historical insight into the history and culture of the place. Known as Sangchen Dorjee Gumba also has fresco paintings on the inner walls of the main chamber depicting Tantric Buddhism. Gumpha Dance (Chyaam dance) or the Buddhist Mask dance is also held here annually. It has now become the centre of Shabdrung Rimpoche (known as the Dharma Raja of Bhutan). The last Shabdrung Rimpoche had relocated to Pedong and expired few years ago. His human form has been preserved at Pedong and will be encased in a Stupa/Chorten on an auspicious day. This place has become an important pilgrimage for the Bhutanese and other followers of the Drukpa Khargu tradition of Buddhism.
The villages near Pedong include Sakyong, Kasyong, Dalep, Kagey, Upper Menchu and Lower Menchu.

Rishyap : The Land of Tranquility , Nature & Kanchenjunga . Rishop , Kalimpong , Darjeeling Himalaya . Best place for birding , butterflying , nature watch & peace. rishyap WBFDC, Lava Rishyap, Neora Valley Resort.
Rishyap is a small village and hill station in the Kalimpong district of the state of West Bengal, India. Rishyap is also spelt as Rishop. Rishyap was developed as a tourist destination recently in 1998. There are many myths and legends associated with the name Rishyap - Ri stands for mountain peak (some say it is lofty) and shop means age-old trees in Tibetan.
Rishyap is located at 27.03N & 88.18E. It has an average elevation of 2591 meters (8500 feet). The place is well known for the majestic views of the Kanchenjunga range. Over the years, many tourists accommodations have come up at Rishyap. The local Sherpas and Lepchas have built small cottage-type accommodations for tourist. Tiffindara, a sunrise-view spot, is about 1 km from here. The village is about 10 km from Lava and 28 km from Kalimpong. National Highway No. 31 between Siliguri and Guwahati passes through Chalsa. The journey time from Chalsa to Rishyap is about 1 hour. The nearest railway station is New Jalpaiguri.
During summer (March to May), the temperature varies from 22 °C to around 8 °C. Average winter (November to February) temperature is about 3°C.
Rishyap is a tranquil, small rural settlement of the Lepcha community in the mountainous landscape at an altitude of 8,500ft. It is only about 28kms to the east of Kalimpong in Darjeeling district. If you are visiting Lava, there is a motorable road of 11kms and also a trekking trail of 4kms from Lava to reach Rishyap.
Rishyap actually forms an integral part of the well known Neora Valley at the foothills of Tiffindara. Although it's a relatively new tourist destination compared to several others in the vicinity, it is still a virgin spot clothed in forests of pine, birch, fir, colorful rhododendrons and orchids with a wonderful view of the vast range of Kanchenjunga and many other Himalayan snow peaks. And this is exactly what the name 'Rishyap' stands for - 'Mountain Peaks and Forests'. And at night look below, and you get amazing sights of the sparkling lights of Gangtok and the small town of Pedong.
And that is all what you can expect to get there. You won't get any city or town life. Which means no restaurants, drinks, food stores or shopping. It's only the nature.
So if nature is all what you get in Rishyap, let's try to take an account of that. As I had mentioned earlier, from most places in Rishyap you get wonderful views of the Himalayan mountains, and there are some spots that offer you sweeping views of the snow peaks over a vast stretch of snow. And from one such spot like Tiffindara if you look around, you will get to see (from left to right) Mt. Kharg, Kokthang, Rathung, Kabru, Talung, Pandim, Kanchenjunga, Simvo, Narsingh and Mt. Siniolchu.
You will also be able to see some parts of the famous Nathula and Jelepla passes. And you will be among the dense concentration of pines, birch, fir and orchids. So if you are a nature lover, then Rishyap is one place which you should keep in your agenda.
Attractions and Activities in and around Rishyap
Note that most of Rishyap doesn't have motorable roads. So your only option is to walk and trek around to visit the nearby attractions.
Tiffindara is a view point for watching sunrise & sunset and about 1.5 kms of uphill trek from the base of Rishyap. You walk through the forests of birch, fir, pine and rhododendrons as you hear the chirping of the birds. It's a narrow forested trail and should be avoided during the monsoon. There are few places along the way where bamboo made benches are provided (now in bad conditions though) where you can take rest before you start your climb again.
Likely there will be some stray mountain dogs accompanying you and showing you the way. It takes about 40 to 45 minutes trek to the top. And the top is like a flat rocky platform created as a view point. And here on a clear day your hard work will be rewarded with a panoramic view of all the Himalayan peaks I mentioned earlier including that of Kanchenjunga. During sunset you can see the gold capped peaks with a play of rainbow colors. Try to carry trekking stick.
At Rishyap you can also walk down to Shiva Buddha Temple. As you climb up the red staircase you will see idols of Lord Shiva and Buddha mounted side by side.
Trek along the Neora Valley forest and reach Jorepokhri (a twin lake).
Other than Rishyap itself, another popular settlement in Neora Valley is the small sleepy village called Kolakham which is about 20kms away. Near to that is the wonderful Changey waterfall which gushes down from high above. Vehicles can't reach all the way up to the fall. You will need to walk down a narrow pathw
