Jelgava Palace is not considered one of Rastrelli's better works. Critics note the dull facade design lacking rhythmic diversity and plastic richness which characterized Rastrelli's works in Empress Elizabeth's period. Also, atypically for Rastrelli, the palace did not feature a garden; nor was the parade yard originally closed, instead facing the urban panorama of Jelgava.

Jelgava is a city in central Latvia about 41 kilometres (25 miles) southwest of Riga with about 64,000 inhabitants. It is the largest town in the region of Zemgale (Semigalia). I visited there for a day on the train from Riga, the journey time was 50 minutes.
Jelgava isn't a particularly 'touristy' destination, there are some wonderful architectural sites, particularly the churches and palace, some parts of the town are quite run down, but I found it to be a charming representation of real Latvia, that you don't find with Riga.
I spent 5 hours in Riga on a slow circular walk with a meal and lots of photographs en-route. I filmed as I walked around, and this video is the edited fruits of my labour, the following locations and features are all identified in the film: Stacijas Parks, St. John's Evangelical Lutheran's Church, Pasta iela, St. George's Church, Orthodox Church, Academia Petrina, Holy Trinity Church Tower, Inside the top of Holy Trinity Church Tower, Views over Jelgava from Holy Trinity Church Tower, the French Restaurant in Holy Trinity Church Tower - the food is EXCELLENT, Driska River, Pils Parks, Mitava Palace (Latvia University of Agriculture), Lielupe River, Lielupe Bridge, Mitavas Bridge, Skating on Pasta Island and Jelgava Railway Station.
I really enjoyed my day in Jelgava and would recommend it to other visitors to Riga and Latvia.
