Jenolan Caves, Blue Mountains region, Australia
The Jenolan Caves are in the Blue Mountains region of New South Wales, Australia. They are regarded as Australia's most outstanding caves and are amongst the best in the world. Also the cave system has been dated to 340 million years, making them the oldest known caves on Earth.
Jenolan's main attractions are the ten spectacular caves that are open to the public, filled with astonishing limestone formations. The caves are open all year. They are very popular, receiving 250,000 visitors per year. Jenolan Caves won awards for their array of tours, activities and facilities. Visitors can spend a couple of hours and see only 1 cave or stay for a week and have a thorough escape at Jenolan Caves. During school holidays and on long weekends you may find Jenolan Caves crowded, but there will be many more cave tours as well, to cater for all the visitors.
Walks in the rugged mountain bush are clearly marked and free of charge. Easier walks take you around the Blue Lake or along the Jenolan River, passed waterfalls and Australia's first hydroelectricity plant. More strenuous walks take you to high lookouts and past natural arches. On any walk, you may encounter Australian native wildlife such as kangaroos and platypuses. Jenolan Caves is in a huge nature reserve, part of the Blue Mountains World Heritage area.
Guided tours of spectacular 'show' caves are available continuously every day and cost between $29 and $40 per adult. Family tickets are available. When you purchase a 'show' cave ticket you also get a 'Jenolan Pass' which lets you access a self-guided tour of the 'twilight' Nettle Cave. There are 10 'show' caves to choose from, each tour 1 to 2 hours. Each cave is breathtaking and some are more strenuous than others. You can just turn up and join the next tour, or if you want to tour a particular cave, you can book ahead.
Ghost tours are available on Wednesday and Saturday nights at 8PM. You must book ahead for this serious torchlight tour, on which gimmicks, sound effects, etc., are never used. Your guide will tell you tales of the unexplained, often from their own experiences.

Jenolan Caves -Jenolan
If you survive the winding road getting there, There are 5 caves classed from easy to difficult to explore. We had kids so did the Chifley Walk, there are some quite steep terrain but the kids found it quite easy. Your guide will explain to you the naming and the formations inside, the caves are all lit up, some with coloured lights, and paths are all with handrails. Experience perfect darkness and silence as the guide switches off the lights for a short period. Call up before you go to see which tour is on what times. Make sure you do a part of the River Walk at least up to the Blue Lake about 350 metres you'll find it fascinating. There is only one way out of Jenolan, and that's back the road we came from so drive slowly and beep your horn before you do the bends.

Jenolan Caves - River Cave
At Jenolan Caves, the River Cave features the underground 'River Styx' which appears as pools of blue water, including the 'Pool of Reflections'. This is a deep, illuminated underground lake, whose almost motionless surface produces spectacular reflections.
You will see the huge 'Queen Esther's Chamber', magnificent shawls, such as the 'Giant Shawl', and many famous formations, including the 'Minaret' (a spectacular stalagmite), 'Grand Column' (biggest column at Jenolan) and the 'Queen's Canopy'.
Australia - Jenolan Caves Part 1
Awesome natural cave formations. What I consider a must see area in Australia.
For Part 2 see this link:
Very peaceful and tranquil. Stay still long enough and the small wild life will surprise you when you least expect it. We had just missed the little Platypus when we got there... all we saw were little air bubbles as it swam away. :)
My favourite site was the River Walk, very relaxing and quiet. Lots of various cave tours and natural formations to see. You can also go spelunking on some of the tighter cave tours or take a leisurely stroll around the area, exploring on your own.
enjoy.
Rob
PS. Thanks to our terrific Aussie friends, Dave Simmons for letting us know about the area and taking us up there ! and Sandi & Tony Whalan for filling us in on the history of the area.
(Tony is related to one of the original explorers who found the Jenolan area. The lan in the last part of the name Whalan is used in the naming of the area: Jeno-lan.)

Part 1 of 2
Part 2 will take a look at inside some of the Caves and rock formations.
We stayed at the Mountain Lodge for a couple nights - but in hindsight we should have spent at least another day there. There is a lot to see and do. Here is the link to the accommodations:

Brief History of the area see the following link:
For thousands of years, the Jenolan area has been part of the culture of local indigenous peoples. The area holds significance to the Gundungurra people, who knew it as 'Binomil' or 'Bin-oo-mur'. In approximately 1835-40 the area was recorded for the first time by either James, Charles or Alf Whalan, three brothers who each claimed to have discovered the caves while searching for a bushranger, James McKeown, whom they claimed used the caves as a hide-out.
The caves, then known as the Fish River Caves, came under New South Wales Government control in 1866, becoming only the second area in the world reserved for the purpose of conservation and the following year Jeremiah Wilson was appointed as the first Keeper of the Caves. Wilson not only explored the already known Elder and Lucas Caves but later discovered the Imperial, Left Imperial (now known as Chifley), Jersey and Jubilee Caves.
The caves were open to tourism early, but there was little protection from visitors damaging formations until souveniring was banned in 1872. In 1884 the name Jenolan Caves was adopted. The name Jenolan comes from the Gundungurra word, Genowlan, for a high place shaped like a foot.

Jenolan Caves
Open every day, there is so much to do at Jenolan Caves that you can stay several days. Historic hotel, huge restaurant, cafe, bar and wide variety of cave tours plus adventure caving.
Entry into jenolan caves
A basic look into the drive into the Jenolan Caves coming from Lithgow direction. Off the great western highway we headed through rydal and Hampton onto Jenolan Caves road. The video shows the trip down into the caves, it gets quite steep and narrow so you won't be able to tow a large trailer or caravan.
Jenolan Caves and Blue Mountains Australia 4K (Lucas Cave)
We took a tour to the Jenolan Caves (we saw the Lucas Caves which has the large cathedral room and light display). We stopped by the famous Blue Mountains on our way there, and saw wallabies as well. The caves were massive, and beautiful. Our favorite part was the light show in one of the caves at the end.

Blue Mountains #1: Driving from Sydney to Jenolan Caves
The Blue Mountains is a mountainous region in New South Wales, Australia. It borders on Sydney's metropolitan area, its foothills starting approximately 50 kilometres west of the NSW capital.
Consisting mainly of a sandstone plateau, the area is dissected by gorges up to 760 metres deep. The highest point of the range is 1,190 metres above sea level. A large part of the Blue Mountains is incorporated into the Greater Blue Mountains Area World Heritage Site, consisting of seven national park areas and a conservation reserve.
The Blue Mountains area includes the local government areas of the City of Blue Mountains, the City of Hawkesbury, the City of Lithgow and Oberon.
The Jenolan Caves are remarkable caves in the Blue Mountains, New South Wales, Australia; 175 kilometres west of Sydney, easily accessed by driving. They are the most celebrated of several similar groups in the limestone of the country being the oldest discovered open caves in the world. They include numerous Silurian marine fossils of great interest and the calcite formations, sometimes pure white, are of extraordinary beauty. The cave network is enormous - over 40 km of multi-level passages - still undergoing active exploration. Several kilometres of the caves have been rendered easily accessible to paying visitors and are well lit.
Jenolan Caves - One of the worlds most spectacular cave formations
Come share our trip with us to Jenolan Caves In NSW.
If you have time to visit only one cave, the Lucas is one of the most amazing, offering variety, the highest and widest caverns plus a glimpse of the pure underground river.
Large groups can easily view the massive chambers of the 'Lucas' - the most visited cave. This spectacular cave includes the most photographed limestone formation at Jenolan, 'The Broken Column' and displays a wide range of huge cave formations.
Visitors walk several flights of stairs to gain access to the Lucas cave. But once inside, the walk becomes less strenuous. There are many rest stops where you can enjoy fantastic sights.
The Lucas Cave's highest chamber, 'The Cathedral' (54 metres high), is often used as a unique wedding venue. This awesome chamber is reputed to have the best acoustics of any performance space in the world.

Sydney + Melbourne 2017 - Episode 4 (Stream at 1080p for BETTER-QUALITY video). To continue from last episode where we all went to visit the Three Sisters lookout and a little bit of Jenolan Caves from the outside, in this episode we will get to go in on a tour to Imperial Cave. And I'm telling you this is very fascinating! This is probably the most interesting and fascinating trip that I've done. Not only it's quite a long and kinda scary drive but also one of the most beautiful roads that I've seen. You have to literally to go to the bottom of the mountain. The ticket for the tour was $45 for one adult. Since we had a big family there, we ended up paying like $600-$700! Hahaha. Anyway, I would really recommend this place. The caving of the stones, the natural calcification and the history of the cave is very cool beyond description. Thank you very much and don't forget to check out my other videos. The Jenolan Caves are limestone caves located within the Jenolan Karst Conservation Reserve in the Central Tablelands region, west of the Blue Mountains, in New South Wales, in eastern Australia. The caves and 3,083-hectare (7,620-acre) reserve are situated approximately 175 kilometres (109 mi) west of Sydney, 20 kilometres (12 mi) east of Oberon and 30 kilometres (19 mi) west of Katoomba.
The caves are the most visited of several similar groups in the limestone caves of the country, and the most ancient discovered open caves in the world. They include numerous Silurian marine fossils and the calcite formations, sometimes pure white, are noted for their beauty. The cave network follows the course of a subterranean section of the Jenolan River. It has more than 40 kilometres (25 mi) of multi-level passages and over 300 entrances. The complex is still being explored. The caves are a tourist destination, with eleven illuminated show caves open to paying visitors.
The caves and conservation reserve are one of the eight protected areas that was inscribed in 2000 to form part of the UNESCO World Heritage–listed Greater Blue Mountains Area. The Jenolan Karst Conservation Reserve is the most westerly of the eight protected areas within the World Heritage Site. The reserve forms part of the Great Dividing Range and was listed on the Register of the National Estate in 1978.
In 2004, the caves and reserve were listed on the New South Wales State Heritage Register with the following inscription:
(( Jenolan Caves Reserve is of state significance for its historical, aesthetic, research and rarity values. The caves and karst landscapes developed as important scientific and tourist destinations throughout the late 19th and 20th centuries, and the Reserve is highly significant as the first public reserve set aside in NSW for the protection of a natural resource – in this case, the Jenolan Caves.— Statement of significance, New South Wales State Heritage Register, 2004.))
What the New South Wales Government has listed as State-significant heritage is actually the Reserve. Just the caves themselves were later nominated as National Heritage (omitting the great majority of the Reserve which has no national heritage values and in part may have no State-significant heritage values).
Tourism
=======
The Jenolan Caves are located three hours drive from Sydney and Canberra. Private coach companies operate day tours from Sydney and from Katoomba railway station. There is no public transport to Jenolan Caves. The caves attract over 250,000 visitors a year, making it one of the most popular tourist locations in rural New South Wales, and has won numerous tourism awards.
Historically the caves were only accessible via the Six Foot Track, a 45km long bridle trail from Katoomba established in 1884. This trail became in disused in the early 1900s after new roads were built in the area, but was reopened as a bushwalking track in 1984. It is now one of the most popular overnight bushwalks in the Blue Mountains area .
Ten of the area's dark caves are open for regular guided tours every day (1 to 2 hours per tour). These show cave tour sizes vary. For example, the delicate Pool of Cerberus Cave can have only 8 on a tour, while the Lucas Cave (with its large chambers) can have up to 65 people per tour.
Tours vary in difficulty. Imperial Cave, for example, has the fewest stairs, while the River Cave is the most strenuous. The average tourist can tour any of these show caves.
A self-guided tour of the huge Nettle Cave/Devils Coach House is also available. The self-guided tour gives visitors a choice of many languages. One of the choices on the self-guided tour is an Aboriginal culture commentary.
Night tours run every night except Sundays, including the popular ghost tour, 'Legends, Mysteries & Ghosts'.
Several undeveloped caves are available for adventure caving (2 hours to all-day tours). These adventure caving tours include the Plughole Tour, which runs daily and includes basic abseiling. Other more challenging adventure caving tours are available.
The Cathedral Chamber, part of the Lucas Cave is famous for its acoustics. Underground concerts take place in this chamber. Concerts also take place in the Grand Arch, including the annual 'Carols in the Caves', which raises money for charity.
During school holidays, specially–developed tours are available for children. Jenolan Caves has long been a popular destination for school excursions.
