Multicultural Contributions
[Anchor Lead]
In our next report, we bring you the story of Cambodian families who have come to Korea to meet with some of their relatives working in Korea. Their visit was realized through the support of a local bank. These social contributions are shining through in the era of a multicultural society.
[Pkg]
Tourists at Jeonju Hanok Village are dressed in colorful hanbok, the traditional Korean attire. A group of a dozen Cambodian tourists dressed in hanbok has also arrived. At the invitation of a local bank, the families of Cambodian workers in Korea have come to visit. Among the group is a newlywed couple who has united after 2 years.
[Soundbite] (Wife of Cambodian Worker) : I missed my husband a lot. I'm so happy to meet him and also tour Korea.
Jeon Buk or JB Bank has been supporting married migrant women in Korea since 8 years ago in their visits back home. This time, the bank has invited families of Cambodian workers in Korea and has also donated scholarships funds for Cambodian students studying in Korea.
[Soundbite] (Cambodian Student) : I am truly grateful for Jeonbuk Bank not only for us students but also for inviting families of fellow Cambodians.
[Soundbite] Im Yong-taek(CEO, Jeonbuk Bank) : It's not realistically feasible for migrant workers to get time off and visit their home countries. Neither can they afford to invite family over here. So they feel very lonely.
There are currently around 1.2 million people in Korea of diverse cultural backgrounds. Social contributions by the financial sector geared toward these expat neighbors are offering warm hope.

Exploring Bukchon Hanok Village ll Seoul South Korea ll by Stanlig Films
Surrounded by Gyeongbokgung Palace, Changdeokgung Palace and Jongmyo Shrine, Bukchon Hanok Village is home to hundreds of traditional houses, called hanok, that date back to the Joseon Dynasty. The name Bukchon, which literally translates to northern village, came about as the neighborhood lies north of two significant Seoul landmarks, Cheonggyecheon Stream and Jongno. Today, many of these hanoks operate as cultural centers, guesthouses, restaurants and tea houses, providing visitors with an opportunity to experience, learn and immerse themselves in traditional Korean culture. As Bukchon Hanok Village is an actual neighborhood with people's homes, visitors are advised to be respectful at all times while looking around.

On Day 17 of our trip to South Korea, we took a day trip to Jeongeup and visited the old house of Gim Dong-su, had a fantastic bowl of pork ribs stew, and a healthy Korean herbal tea.
00:24 Gim Dong-su House - This is a historical preserved home of Gim Dong-su who was a wealthy man. You can walk around his house and see how the elite formerly lived in Korea. Also, next door there is the Gwon Beon Culture and Art Academy, and we saw some traditional dance and enjoyed some traditional Korean tea.
5:11 Paepijeong (배비정) Restaurant - For lunch we drove over to a city called Jeongeup and went to a restaurant to eat pork ribs stew. The restaurant was old Korean style with the wonderful barrel can tables. It took a few minutes to prepare our food because the entire hot pot of pork ribs stew was made from scratch as we ordered it. It was well worth it, the meat was good and the mixture of all the ingredients was delicious and home tasting. Price - 10,000 Won ($8.68) per person.
9:31 Mu Du Rang - 7,000 Won ($6.08) per cup - Ssanghwa cha (쌍화차) - Jeongeup is famous throughout South Korea for its healthy herbal teas and drinks made from herbs. So we stopped at a cafe and had a delicious healthy tea that was made with twenty different ingredients.
12:53 Naejangsan National Park - 3,000 Won ($2.60) - Naejangsan National Park is a national park in South Korea that’s famous for its maple trees. We walked around for a while and visited the temple. Again, the nature in Korea is beautiful, and the maple trees, in full green and yellow colors, were beautiful.
14:45 Sangchu Twigim (상추튀김) Restaurant - For dinner we drove back to Jeonju and we went to a Korean snacks food restaurant called Sangchu Twigim (상추튀김). We ordered some of the most popular Korean snacks including gimbap, twigim, and some fish soups. The food was pretty good, but honestly I’m not a huge fan of Tteokbokki. Total price - 17,000 Won ($14.76) for everything.

On Day 20 of our food trip to South Korea, we spent the day in Jeonju. After walking around the Hanok village a little more, we ate lunch, and then had an outstanding dinner at a restaurant called Marubul Restaurant (마루벌돌구이), that serves samgyeopsal (pork belly bbq) on a hot stone and lights it on fire!
00:25 Holly’s Coffee - 4,100 Won ($3.46) - Ying and I started off the day with a cup of coffee at the Korean coffee chain called Holly’s Coffee. Pretty good place and really nice place to sit.
00:52 Dawoorang Dumpling - 6,000 Won ($5.06) for plate - “Containing all of the happiness and attention dumplings!” - I really wanted to try the dumplings at Dawoorang Dumpling within the hanok village of Joenju, so we walked over there and had some mandoo dumplings. They indeed were pretty delicious.
2:52 Veteran (베테랑분식) Restaurant, Price - 6,000 Won ($5.06) per bowl - For lunch we ate at a Korean noodle restaurant in the Hanok village known as Veteran (베테랑분식) Restaurant. I thought the food was average, nothing very good, but it is a very well known popular restaurant and a budget place to eat when you’re exploring the Hanok village in Jeonju.
7:47 Jeonju Zoo - 1,300 Won ($1.10) - In order to just spend a little bit of time prior to eating dinner we walked around the Jeonju Zoo, which is more like a big park. It’s a nice place to take a walk.
9:31 Flaming pork belly bbq at Marubul Restaurant (마루벌돌구이) - One of the most beloved Korean foods is samgyeopsal, or pork belly which is often barbecued. At Marubul Restaurant (마루벌돌구이) in Jeonju they take things to the next level and grill your samgyeopsal on a hot stone in front of you. When the meat has been cooked they douse on some alcohol and light it on fire so it goes up in a flaming bbq of fire. The result is wonderful, crispy and fatty pieces of pork belly, all wrapped up with lettuce wraps. Total price for 4 - 66,000 Won ($55.63).
It was a fantastic day, the pork belly bbq was the highlight!

Home-Cooked Korean Food: The BEST Kimchi! (Day 13)
Subscribe now:
Watch more Korea food videos:
One Day 13 of my food trip to South Korea, we started off in the morning by visiting a beautiful temple in the mountains, then having a delicious gamjatang (pork bone soup lunch), and ending the day with home-cooked Korean food and the best kimchi I’ve ever had!
0:29 Geumsansa Temple - 3,000 Won ($2.56) - Geumsansa Temple is a beautiful temple just a short drive from Jeonju, and it’s a wonderful area to go hiking and to visit the temple and surrounding parks. The nature is beautiful. On the hike, you’ll find some snacks, and so we decided to stop to eat some dried persimmons, which Korea is known for. The persimmons were sweet, and while I was expecting the entire thing to be dried all the way through, it was still soft and gooey in the center. It was amazing.
4:18 Hey Ru Gamjatang, Gamjatang - 9,000 Won ($7.69) - One of my alltime favorite Korean foods is gamjatang, a potato and pork bone soup with chili. In Jeonju, we went to a restaurant called Hey Ru Gamjatang, known for serving slow cooked bones piled high. My bowl of gamjatang also came with kimchi in the bottom. It was not only delicious, it was incredibly delicious, one of the best versions of the dish that I’ve ever had.
8:56 Homemade Korean Food - For dinner we had a treat and were invited over to a local home to learn how to make kimchi and also to have dinner. After assembling the kimchi with all the ingredients (and it was one of the most complex versions of kimchi I’ve seen as well), we then had dinner and ate some of the fresh kimchi. The kimchi was spectacular, eaten in it’s fresh stage, so it wasn’t fermented yet, so it was almost like a cabbage chili salad. For dinner, the main dish we had was Dakbokkeumtang, a chicken chili stew, which was also spectacular. Finally for dessert I had my first take of a Korean melon (chamoe).

Song for You, Song for Me
Pune, a city located 200 km away from Mumbai, is the exemplary educational city of India. However, various areas of the city are slums not any different from garbage dumps, and the low castes live there, abandoned to worry about their survival each day. They are Dalits, the untouchables who are believed to bring misfortunes.
Despite the poverty and ignorance affecting the slums, changes started to appear after Kim Jae-chang, an opera singer, arrived in 2011. When he turned 50, he decided to come to India and spend his remaining life helping children become self-reliant. In order to accomplish his goal. he gathered a group of children from the slums and established Banana Children′s Choir. Here, Banana does not refer to the fruit but to a Hindi word meaning self-reliance.
However, the choir practice turns out to be a mess. The children constantly lie and skip lessons, but Kim Jae-chang stays committed to the choir as the leader. The biggest reason for the children′s maladjustment is their lack of self-confidence. Some of these children were not even registered at birth because of their parents′ ignorance.
Kim Jae-chang had to teach about self-love, consideration for others, gratitude and truth before teaching about singing. And eventually, the children started changing. Last winter, Banana Children′s Choir went on a month-long tour through Korea, touching the hearts of countless people. The members returned to India more mature, and their parents also began to believe that their children could live different lives.
After arriving in India, Banana Children′s Choir prepare for a special performance on January 26, the Republic Day of India. The stage is set in the slums where the children live. On that very stage, they perform to give to the neighbors what they found through music: hope.
For their entire lives, these children were treated with contempt for being the untouchables. Stories of dreams and hope they developed from Banana Children′s Choir are told on March 18, on Arirang Prime.
Song for You, Song for Me
