Exhibition at Korean Cultural Centre, India
Both the Korean traditional art works and the work of Indian contemporary artists have been exhibited at Korean Cultural Centre during Hanji Festival.
Korean Cultural Centre and The Millenium Jeonju Hanji Forum together hold Hanji Festival at Korean Cultural Centre in Delhi.
Hanji is Korean traditional paper. This festival strive to introduce Hanji in India while showcasing the evolution of its usage
through stationery and day-to-day objects. The creation of clothing with paper was unimaginable previously. Hanji is used in clothing, dolls, furniture, accessories, fans and as a sub-material for other pieces of artistic works. Through this festival, the multifaceted usage of Hanji will be displayed and is divided largely into four categories.
Hanji is Korean traditional paper and paper mulberry tree or dak tree in Korean, which is the key material needed to make Hanji. First, Hanji was used in ancient Korea for various applications such as document paper, construction and medical device. It was used to make books and royal records to keep them preserved for a long time. For the construction application, Hanji as wallpapers and window papers has insulation and ventilation effects and controls humidity. Also, Hanji was used as a medical device to stop bleeding.

Traditional Korean neighborhood with lots of cute cafes
Please watch: 5 Star Hotel Review: JW Marriott Seoul at Banpo Express Bus Terminal Gangnam, Korea
--~--
In this video, we visit Bukchon Hanok Village (Bokchon-dong). This is a traditional Korean neighborhood with lots of cute cafes, shops, and picturesque streets where you can stroll wearing a hanbok and take photos. Bukchon is famous for its picturesque streets and hanok homes.
Bukchon Hanok Village is located between Gyeongbokgung Palace and Changdeokgung Palace. It's streets are lined with traditional hanok homes. Unlike other hanok villages (such as Namsangol Hanok Village), Bukchon was not created for tourists. It is a residential neighborhood that is inhabited by real people.
In this video, we just do a quick tour of one street in Bukchon. We pass by a craft fair, take in the atrsy vibe of the village, and I talk about my thoughts on handmade items. At the end we enjoy some kawaii cotton candy! This is not your traditional tour of Bukchon in terms of looking at the homes. I will return later with a video of all the homes and more atmosphere, cute cafes and shops!

Hanji is the name for Korean traditional paper made from bark of mulberry trees, Jeong Eun Hee's creates handmade paper of various textures using a traditional technique called Jumchy that draws upon the malleable physical properties of Hanji. The resultant paper, which looks fragile, almost ethereal, is in fact, amazingly resilient making it a very versatile medium for creating products that are both aesthetic and functional. For Jeong Eun Hee, the process of making Hanji is enjoyable as the process of using Hanji creatively to make a finished product.
The exhibition displays products made with Hanji paper. The intricate traditional art of stitching is also employed to produce delicate and aesthetically pleasing products that could enhance any contemporary setting. As such, the exhibition examines the contemporary relevance of tradition.
About the Artist
Ms Jeoung Eun Hee has post-graduate degree from the Hanji Art Department in Yewon Arts University, Korea. Ms Jeoung has presented 3 solo exhibitions, 5 invitation exhibitions and 50 group exhibitions in Korea. She has participated in the Paper World exhbition in Germany 2015: at the Craft Trend Fair in Korea in 2014, the Eunique Craft & Design Fair in Germany in 2012, 2013 & 2015 and in the Jeonju Hanji Cultural Festival invitation exhibition in Russia in 2010.
Restoration and preservation properties of hanji begins to get recognized
한지의 복원기술의 재발견 및 세계화
Hanji is Korean traditional mulberry paper that boasts natural colors, good ventilation and excellent durability.
Recently, it's been coming under the spotlight again. Our News Feature tonight with Lee Jiwon.
Replicas of the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, which record some 500 years of royal history, are on display as part of a special exhibition in Korea's southwestern city of Jeonju.
Although they've only recently been printed and bound, the replicas look just as the originals might have,... because both are made of hanji, the traditional Korean paper that's gaining traction as a reliable material for restoration and preservation work.
To make the replica as similar to the original as possible, we made the hanji in the traditional way, where no chemicals are added and a multi-directional sheet formation technique is used.
Traditionally made hanji is also said to last more than hundred years longer than the mass-produced kind, and its durability is attributed to the meticulous production process.
To make hanji, mulberry bark, or dak, is boiled and pounded to make the fibers bond well.
The mixture is then put on a flat bamboo frame and a cross-directional sheet formation method is used.
The sheets are then air-dried on wooden boards and beaten with a wooden hammer to smooth out the texture.
Because of these properties, hanji is not only used to restore and preserve ancient Korean documents and cultural heritage items,... it's also starting to be used in other countries, too.
Earlier in the year, hanji was chosen for use in the restoration of a globe given to Pope John XXIII in the late 1960s.
There is also a handful of Italian cultural items that have used hanji for restoration and preservation purposes, including the Rossano Gospels and a painting of Baroque artist Pietro da Cortona.
Hanji was the most suitable,... because it's not easily torn,... even when wet,... and it sticks and blends very well with other materials.
And just last week, a ceremony was held in Rome, where the prestigious Central Institute for the Restoration and Conservation of Archival and Library Heritage recognized hanji for its value in the restoration of ancient archives and books -- becoming the first foreign institute to do so.
Until now, the traditional Japanese paper, washi, was the usual choice for preservation and restoration work at archives around the world.
Japan had promoted the paper long before Korea did,... by holding state-organized forums and workshops.
And although hanji and washi have similar traits, hanji's unique traits are starting to gain recognition.
The fibers used for hanji are longer than the ones used for washi,... giving it greater durability. And so, it's better to use hanji when working with round surfaces. And because hanji is made by crossing the fibers, the paper doesn't curl when dried,... making it suitable for use behind a thin layer of paper.
For the past few years,... Korea has been active in promoting hanji and its suitability for restoration and preservation work by inviting paper experts to local hanji villages and holding workshops abroad.
But hanji experts say more needs to be done, so hanji can be mass produced but with the same high quality.
We do not yet have a standard for hanji. So in many cases, the same company will produce hanji paper of different quality and thickness. For the world to really recognize and use hanji,... we must get people to trust in it... by setting standards and providing consistent quality.
Experts add that Korea should do more to boost its hanji industry,... including training aspiring craftspeople and boosting domestic use of the paper to lift supply and demand.

Korea (/kəˈriːə/ kə-ree-ə or /kɔrˈiːə/;[4] Korean: 한국 Hanguk [hanɡuːk] or 조선 Joseon [tɕosʌn] -- see etymology), is an East Asian territory that is divided into two separate sovereign states, North Korea and South Korea. Located on the Korean Peninsula, Korea is bordered by China to the northwest and Russia to the northeast. It is separated from Japan to the east by the Korea Strait and the Sea of Japan (East Sea), and it is separated from Taiwan to the south by the East China Sea.
The adoption of the Chinese writing system (Hanja in Korean) in 2nd century BC and Buddhism in 4th century AD had profound effects on the Three Kingdoms of Korea, which was first united during the Silla Dynasty (57 BC -- AD 935) under the king Munmu of Silla. The united Silla dynasty fell to Goryeo Dynasty in 935 at the end of Later Three Kingdoms of Korea era. Goryeo was a highly cultured state and created the Jikji in the 14th century. The Mongol invasions in the 13th century, however, greatly weakened the nation, which was forced to become a tributary state. After the Mongol Empire's collapse, severe political strife followed and Goryeo was replaced by the Joseon Dynasty in 1388.
The first 200 years of Joseon were marked by relative peace and saw the creation of the Korean alphabet Hangul by King Sejong the Great in the 14th century and the rise in influence of Confucianism in the country. During the later part of the dynasty, however, Korea's isolationist policy earned it the Western nickname the Hermit kingdom. By the late 19th century, the country became the object of the colonial designs of Japan. In 1910, Korea was annexed by Japan and remained a colony until the end of World War II in August 1945.
In 1945, the Soviet Union and the United States agreed on the surrender of Japanese forces in Korea. The aftermath of World War II and surrender of Japanese forces in the Korean peninsula left Korea partitioned along the 38th parallel, with the north under Soviet occupation and the south under U.S. occupation. These circumstances soon became the basis for the division of Korea by the two superpowers, exacerbated by their inability to agree on the terms of Korean independence. The two Cold War rivals then established governments centered around their own respective ideologies, leading to Korea's division into two political entities: North Korea and South Korea.
North Korea, officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, is a single-party state, now centred around Kim Il Sung's Juche ideology, with a centrally planned industrial economy. South Korea, officially the Republic of Korea, is a multi-party state with a capitalist market economy, alongside membership in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development and the Group of Twenty.
In ancient Chinese texts, Korea is referred to as Rivers and Mountains Embroidered on Silk (금수강산, 錦繡江山) and Eastern Nation of Decorum (동방예의지국, 東方禮儀之國).[59] Individuals are regarded as one year old when they are born, as Koreans reckon the pregnancy period as one year of life for infants, and age increments increase on New Year's Day rather than on the anniversary of birthdays. Thus, one born immediately before New Year's Day may only be a few days old in western reckoning, but two years old in Korea. Accordingly, a Korean person's stated age (at least among fellow Koreans) will be one or two years more than their age according to western reckoning. However, western reckoning is sometimes applied with regard to the concept of legal age; for example, the legal age for purchasing alcohol or cigarettes in the Republic of Korea is 19, which is measured according to western reckoning.

Korean university′s library of art
도서관 서예작품
When heading to the library, most students take their books and computers to get some studying done,... but one university is looking to breathe some new life into the venue by changing the surroundings.
Our Yim Yoonhee joins us with more.
Chonbuk National University is now hosting an art exhibition that students frequent on a daily basis,... or at least should be frequenting.
A master calligraphy artist shares his work with these students.
Take a look.
Set in the middle of one of the quietest places on campus,... the library is not where you'd expect to encounter art.
But now, amid the hustle and bustle of prepping for exams and papers, students can also enlighten their cultural sides as well,... with calligraphy art.
One of the oldest forms of art, calligraphy is the art of writing, and what better place than a library full of words to house these works of art.
[KOREAN]
There was a lot of empty space in the library, but now it's filled with this calligraphy art, which is very meaningful. I feel calm looking at the pieces and also don't feel like I'm wasting time.
The works range from traditional Korean writing to playful recreations of everyday images.
And while the top priority for students is still of course to study, these art works are aimed at enriching each student's experience,... as they spend grueling hours surrounded by books and computers.
[KOREAN]
Seeing all this beautiful, traditional Korean calligraphy leaves a very deep impression.
It's a traditional form of art... that younger generations are growing further away from, as they get pulled closer to technology.
But artist Kim Doo-gyeong aims to change that, and bring the traditional art to the students.
[KOREAN]
If you come in to the university, there's very limited space, however, we chose this place with these young people and their lives in mind.
Some of the calligraphy works have even been transformed into digital versions,... a unique interpretation... resulting in something that is sure to catch the eyes of the tech savvy student.
I known when I was a student, the library was always a stressful place.
That's how many students feel.
It's true that the younger generation is so computer-centric that older generations are worried that the appreciation for beautiful calligraphy will disappear.
And calligraphy has for centuries been considered a prized art here in Korea.
Which is why artist Kim wanted to lighten the atmosphere and create these fun and beautiful calligraphy art works.
Tell us more about the calligraphy master.
This is his 8th solo exhibition, and there are 30 of his works currently on display.
He also has a permanent studio and display in Jeonju, called the Munjahyang house.
Nowadays, many artists have incorporated Hangul into contemporary art works,... and while artist Kim does the same, by creating images of animals and such with Hangul, he also retains the classic beauty of the characters with each work.
Thank you for that report.
Always a pleasure.
