[Secret Korea - Seoul] Ep. 9 Bukchon Hanok Village / YTN (Yes! Top News)
'Hanok' is the traditional Korean house.
The all natural and neatly built Hanok is a simple yet elegant Korean house.
Let's follow Mr. Petar Andonov, the Ambassador of Bulgaria to Korea, and see the beauty of the hanok.
The best place to find hanok in Seoul is the Bukchon Hanok Village.
Located between the Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung Palaces, the preservation area is home to over 1,500 hanoks.
The Bangsongjae, which is at the entrance of Bukchon, is the village library where you can enjoy the hanok atmosphere.
Shall we find out what it feels like to read a book in a hanok?
Within Bukchon, a friendly village where cozy hanoks line the narrow alleys,
you can find a number of workshops that pulsate with Korean tradition.
At the Bukchon Traditional Crafts Center, you can try and make various crafts each day of the week.
Traditional natural dyeing is very popular and you can even use rubber bands to create your own patterns.
The fabric almost looks like the deep blue sea after being dyed in the rich indigo color.
You can also experience the merry tune of the gugak in Bukchon.
Feel the joy of Korean tradition by learning folk songs and rhythmically playing the exciting Janggu.
Why not indulge in the most Korean scenery in Seoul by visiting the traditional Bukchon Hanok Village.

Korean Hanok Cafe ???? Visiting the Vets ???? | Seoul Vlog
We visited a traditional Korean hanok café in Pangyo which is a 15 minute subway ride from Gangnam. Sasong is a beautiful mix of traditional yet modern café that offers a few simple drinks and desserts. I ended up trying the citrus matcha cake which tasted amazing. Sasong is a little out of the way but if you get off at Pangyo station I recommend taking either a taxi to this café or the bus (bus number 602 from outside Pangyo Station goes directly to the café). The rest of the weekend was spent at another café that recently opened up nearby called Billy&Otis and it’s super cute dessert display is great for those Instagram pictures. Milk also took a visit to the vet to get some of his baby teeth removed but is doing much better now.

Last Dream of Korean War Veteran
Sometimes even the life of one person can serve as evidence of tragic history that should never be forgotten. The 82-year-old Korean War veteran Kenneth Lee Ostrum from the U.S. visited Korea for the first time since the devastating war, and he brought with him a photograph that was taken 60 years ago. Mr. Ostrum was in charge of training recruits and restoring the ruined infrastructure of Korean cities. The most rewarding and memorable thing for him was setting up an orphanage for war orphans. He says he received inspiration and encouragement from Korean people who helped one another during the difficult times and didn't lose hope even in the most desperate situations.
During his one-week stay in Korea, Mr. Ostrum visited Imjingak Park and Dora Observatory in Paju, which symbolize the pain of the divided nation. He was impressed by how Seoul has grown into one of the world's biggest metropolises. But the primary goal of Mr. Ostrum's trip to Korea was visiting Nonsan and Ganggyeong, where he wanted to meet with Miss Jang, who spearheaded the establishment of the orphanage during the Korean War. The faded photo that he brought with him shows the 22-year-old Mr. Ostrum with some 50 war orphans and the unforgettable Miss Jang. Will the final wish of his life come true?

Hanok houses find new appeal among homebuyers
현대화된 감성으로 새롭게 주목받는 한옥의 인기
Korea′s traditional houses... known as hanok... were once thought to be consigned to the past,
but a growing number of Koreans are now choosing hanok over... say... a high-rise apartment.
Homebuyers are gravitating toward hanok as they are increasingly being fitted with sleek,
modern interiors to go with their unique exterior beauty.
Park Ji-won reports.
Hankyunghun is a gallery cafe that opened last year in central Seoul.
The cafe features a traditional Korean exterior and modern interior designs.
For its unique traditional beauty, it received the Best Hanok Award earlier this month from the
nation′s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport.
Kim Hyung-woo, the French-trained architect and owner of the gallery says... he blended
modern construction materials... while maintaining the unique beauty of Korean hanok.
I tried to give traditional Korean architecture a more modern feel that fits the modern life
cycle. I blended modern materials to create modern spatial beauty in the traditional house. I
think traditional Korean architecture can be reinterpreted in an infinite number of ways.
The number of hanok houses in the nation has risen to about 100-thousand,.. nearly double
the number from just six years ago.
Due to their rise in popularity,... SH Corporation, the public urban development company for
the Seoul metropolitan area,.. has created a new hanok village in northern Seoul... that caters to
individual buyers.
A few months after going on the market, about 85 percent of the 156 lots available had been
already sold.
Unlike modern apartments,... hanok is built in a eco-friendly way,... due to its construction
materials, such as rocks, red clay, and trees. So people concerned about their health and
allergies tend to show more of an interest in hanok these days.
Combining the eco-friendly and aesthetic strengths of traditional Korean housing elements with
the comforts of modern living, hanok houses these days strike a balance for the best of both
worlds.
Park Ji-won, Arirang News.
