Jeonju Makgeolli - Best SOUTH KOREAN FOOD Experience! (Day 11)

On Day 11 in South Korea, we visited Iksan, and then for dinner I was introduced to Jeonju Makgeolli, which is a type of rice wine and in Jeonju they take it to the next level, accompanied by a massive mind-blowing delicious meal.
If you’re new here, check out my full South Korean food video playlist here:
00:38 Mireuksa Temple Site - For our first stop of the day, we headed to Mireuksa Temple Site, which is an ancient Korean temple site located in Iksan. Much of the original temple and area has been destroyed, but efforts are being made to restore and renovate it.
2:36 Rack-Si-Ru Restaurant - For lunch we drove into Iksan city and went to a restaurant called Rack-Si-Ru Restaurant, known for serving Korean style salted grilled fish (we also ate this same type of grilled fish in Seoul). The meal was excellent, especially because the fish was served with all the different side dishes. Price - 8,000 Won ($6.83) per person
6:05 Special Forces - 30,000 Won ($25.60) for 2 - Our next activity of the day we drove over to the Special Forces arena, and got all geared up in combat gear and had a match against a random team. It was pretty fun, and a lot of good exercise running around.
7:56 Daedunsan Provincial Park (대둔산도립공원) - We then took a drive over to Daedunsan Provincial Park (대둔산도립공원), which is yet another beautiful mountain park in Jeonbuk province. Although I would have loved to go hiking, we didn’t have too much time, so we took the Cable Car - 9,000 Won ($7.68) round trip, to the top of the mountain for a nice view and then back down again.
9:50 Yetchon Makgeolli (막걸리) - Makgeolli (막걸리) is a type of Korean rice wine, and while you can get it all over Korean, Jeonju Makgeolli (막걸리) takes thing to the next level. Yetchon Makgeolli is a famous restaurant that specializes in makgeolli, and when you order a kettle full of it, it comes with and unbelievable selection of Korean dishes. And when you order more makgeolli, they give you more and more food. We literally had a double decker layer of food on our table when we were eating. And these were just like simple Korean dishes, these were some of the most amazing Korean dishes I had during my trip to Jeonju. The loud ambiance of the restaurant, the makgeolli, and all the food made it a truly memorable Korean food experience. Total price - 65,000 Won ($55.46) for everything.
Disclaimer: My trip to Jeonju was sponsored by the Jeonbuk Centre for International Affairs.

Jeonju Hanok Village, Jaman Mural Village & Trying Jeonju Bibimbap | South Korea Travel
Today we visited the Hanok Village and Jaman Mural Village in Jeonju, South Korea. Although a little tacky, we still found quiet and authentic-feeling corners of the Hanok Village and the Jaman Mural Village was totally empty!
For lunch, we decided to try some of the famous Jenoju Bibimbap, as we’d heard Jeonju is known for its food and Bibimbap especially!
South Korea travel has been even better than we expected and it is so easy to find some fun and interesting things to do in this small but diverse country. Jeonju food is known in South Korea to be some of the best, so we were happy to be able to show this in this South Korea vlog.

(REUPLOADED: A few people pointed out that the song I chose on the original video was a remix from traditional Chinese music. I use music from free sources, as I do not have the money to purchase the rights to use other songs. I simply liked the sound of this song with the video, and I did not consider the cultural implications of the song. I was wrong. I sincerely apologize, and I hope that I did not offend anyone. To those commenters who pointed this out to me, I want to say thank you. I hope that you will read this apology, and I just want to say thank you to everyone who watches our videos. One of our favorite places in South Korea is Jeonju: the old capital of the Baekje kingdom. Admittedly, we usually come to enjoy the makgeolli streets that come alive at night, but today we decided to explore the Hanok village.
Hundreds of traditional hanok-style homes line the endless alleyways, which retain their magical quality in every phase of the day.
In this video, Courtney and I enjoy some traditional Korean tea at 다화원, we eat some wood-fired 호떡 (Hotteok) at 전동호떡 (Jeondong Hotteok), and have our very first 떡갈비 (Tteok-galbi) BBQ at 에루화 (Eruhwa). 떡갈비 is Korean rib sausage, which is blended with spices and a marinade that is slightly sweet.

JEONJU BIBIMBAP | FIRST TIME WEARING HANBOK | JEONJU HANOK VILLAGE
HELLO FRAMILY (get it? friends + family = family)
Lol, anyway, this is our super fun trip to Jeonju :) We have been wanting to come here since we saw Youtuber Mark Wiens come here. We had to try this bibibamp and Jeff was very eager to wear the habok! I was a little hesitant with the idea of putting the traditional Korean clothing on, but once I saw that it was a normal thing for almost everyone to wear it around the town, I said, WHY NOT! :)
I do not regret it for a second lol. Wearing the hanbok dress made me feel like a princess and it was just so beautiful, I was in love.
Well, I hope you all enjoy this little adventure of ours!!

Korean Travel: Jeonju Food Tour
This summer we had some friends visiting from London so we took them to my husband's hometown of Jeonju.
Jeonju is one of the most famous cities in Korea for food and especially famous for bibimbap. But here you can see there is much more to Jeonju than that! See my husbands favorite foods ranging from hanjeongsik, kalbi, memil guksu, kongnamul gukbap, kimchi jjigae, and makgeolli.
I'll list the places below!

Let's go to... Jeonju, South Korea!
It's our annual Hangeul Day Challenge and this time we are going big! We've gone to the very famous Jeonju Hanok village and even donned some traditional Korean clothes in the spirit of the games. Thus far our Hangeul Day Challenges have resulted in a 1-1 tie. Who will be victorious??
Yetchon Makgeolli (옛촌막걸리), Jeonju, South Korea
A group of our friends went to 옛촌막걸리 (Yetchon Makgeolli) in Jeonju, South Korea. Our friend Henry calls this place the heart of Korea, and he may be onto something. It is hard to really express what makes this place so special. Every trip to 옛촌막걸리 feels like a portal into another gastronomical realm, where copious amounts of Korean rice-wine comes accompanied with dish after dish of spectacular and challenging food. But more than that, the proprietor's mission seems to be to make sure every customer has an unforgettable experience. People are noisy, the walls are covered in graffiti, and the owner keeps bringing dishes and kettles of makgeolli with a smile. A slight sadistic smile that seems to indicate she would be willing to kill you with food and drink if you are willing to stick around long enough.
So here's how this place works. You go in with a group of 4 or more, and order the traditional makgeolli experience. (If you have less, you can choose to order and pay for the dishes separately. Not as fun, but a bit easier with a small group). Now, you pay for the kettles, and not the food. With each giant kettle of the rice wine, more dishes come out. Each level shows a marked improvement in quality and uniqueness. But, as any good chef knows, sometimes you need to surprise your guests.
This night, the top tier item was boendegi (silk-worm pupa), which might be considered Korea's lowest and cheapest dish. Usually, it is served out of paper cups for less than a dollar at festivals. But this night, Yetchon decided to cook up Korea's cheapest food with mind-blowing flavors, and set that out for guests as the top teir food of the night. Imagine, working hard to see what that last dish is, and out comes the equivalent of microwave popcorn. But then you eat the thing, and you understand. The dish is elevated! You are in good hands.
This place knows what they are doing. And anyone visiting Korea needs to visit this place to really understand how special this country's culinary tradition is. But be careful. After 6 or so kettles, your party is bound to feel the magical effects of the strange beverage.
I think I need to start a companion food blog for this channel.
