Korea Trip | A Weekend in Jeonju
We spent a great weekend eating, exploring, and fully-experiencing all that Jeonju, South Korea has to offer! More:
Highlights: street-food everywhere, our lovely hanok accommodations, a free traditional Korean dance performance, foot massage, Jeonju's famous bibimbap, nightlife, discovering unique craft in the village, and the best Western-style brunch I've had in Korea so far.
This video is part of a new travel vlog series chronicling my boyfriend's recent visit to South Korea. Pardon the shakiness at some parts. We get better at it along the way!
He came for the holidays (December 15th to January 2nd) and stayed a total of 18 days. Within that time period I planned a full itinerary that got us from Seoul to Gwangju to Jeonju and then finally to Busan. I'm hoping to upload at least a video a week so please do stay tuned to see more of our travels.
Take care always and see you guys with the next video (Arrival in Seoul and Myeongdong) very soon! ヽ(゜∇゜)ノ

jeonju hanji festival
Korea holds Jeonju hanji festival in the jeonla province every year, where beautiful tradition comes alive. Many people from across the country come to see how hanji is made. You can find the traditional way of making Korea's unique paper! enjoy this video! :)
Jeonju Hanji, traditional Korean paper
Koreans employed a unique technique for making very durable paper, the like of which can hardly be found anywhere else in the world.
Mulberry trees, whose bark is used to make hanji, grow in very different climatic conditions to those in other countries. The process of making hanji requires raw materials mixed with water to be spread out on a horsehair-woven screen twice over, resulting in an exquisiteness of quality that machine-made paper sheets cannot emulate.
From the Goryeo Dynasty onwards, the hanji made in Jeonju (Jeonju Hanji) was used for the diplomatic documents sent by Korean officials to other countries and reports made to the king.
Hanji was also used for a range of other applications. Jeonju Hanji has secured its position as the best paper ever made or used in Korea on the basis of such traditions.

Restoration and preservation properties of hanji begins to get recognized
한지의 복원기술의 재발견 및 세계화
Hanji is Korean traditional mulberry paper that boasts natural colors, good ventilation and excellent durability.
Recently, it's been coming under the spotlight again. Our News Feature tonight with Lee Jiwon.
Replicas of the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, which record some 500 years of royal history, are on display as part of a special exhibition in Korea's southwestern city of Jeonju.
Although they've only recently been printed and bound, the replicas look just as the originals might have,... because both are made of hanji, the traditional Korean paper that's gaining traction as a reliable material for restoration and preservation work.
To make the replica as similar to the original as possible, we made the hanji in the traditional way, where no chemicals are added and a multi-directional sheet formation technique is used.
Traditionally made hanji is also said to last more than hundred years longer than the mass-produced kind, and its durability is attributed to the meticulous production process.
To make hanji, mulberry bark, or dak, is boiled and pounded to make the fibers bond well.
The mixture is then put on a flat bamboo frame and a cross-directional sheet formation method is used.
The sheets are then air-dried on wooden boards and beaten with a wooden hammer to smooth out the texture.
Because of these properties, hanji is not only used to restore and preserve ancient Korean documents and cultural heritage items,... it's also starting to be used in other countries, too.
Earlier in the year, hanji was chosen for use in the restoration of a globe given to Pope John XXIII in the late 1960s.
There is also a handful of Italian cultural items that have used hanji for restoration and preservation purposes, including the Rossano Gospels and a painting of Baroque artist Pietro da Cortona.
Hanji was the most suitable,... because it's not easily torn,... even when wet,... and it sticks and blends very well with other materials.
And just last week, a ceremony was held in Rome, where the prestigious Central Institute for the Restoration and Conservation of Archival and Library Heritage recognized hanji for its value in the restoration of ancient archives and books -- becoming the first foreign institute to do so.
Until now, the traditional Japanese paper, washi, was the usual choice for preservation and restoration work at archives around the world.
Japan had promoted the paper long before Korea did,... by holding state-organized forums and workshops.
And although hanji and washi have similar traits, hanji's unique traits are starting to gain recognition.
The fibers used for hanji are longer than the ones used for washi,... giving it greater durability. And so, it's better to use hanji when working with round surfaces. And because hanji is made by crossing the fibers, the paper doesn't curl when dried,... making it suitable for use behind a thin layer of paper.
For the past few years,... Korea has been active in promoting hanji and its suitability for restoration and preservation work by inviting paper experts to local hanji villages and holding workshops abroad.
But hanji experts say more needs to be done, so hanji can be mass produced but with the same high quality.
We do not yet have a standard for hanji. So in many cases, the same company will produce hanji paper of different quality and thickness. For the world to really recognize and use hanji,... we must get people to trust in it... by setting standards and providing consistent quality.
Experts add that Korea should do more to boost its hanji industry,... including training aspiring craftspeople and boosting domestic use of the paper to lift supply and demand.

Hanji is the name for Korean traditional paper made from bark of mulberry trees, Jeong Eun Hee's creates handmade paper of various textures using a traditional technique called Jumchy that draws upon the malleable physical properties of Hanji. The resultant paper, which looks fragile, almost ethereal, is in fact, amazingly resilient making it a very versatile medium for creating products that are both aesthetic and functional. For Jeong Eun Hee, the process of making Hanji is enjoyable as the process of using Hanji creatively to make a finished product.
The exhibition displays products made with Hanji paper. The intricate traditional art of stitching is also employed to produce delicate and aesthetically pleasing products that could enhance any contemporary setting. As such, the exhibition examines the contemporary relevance of tradition.

Kim Janang performs traditional Korean dance on Arirang song : Hanji Festival
Kim Janang performs traditional dance on Arirang song at Hanji Festival in Delhi.
Korean Cultural Centre and The Millenium Jeonju Hanji Forum together hold Hanji Festival at Korean Cultural Centre in Delhi.
Arirang is a Korean folk song, often considered as the unofficial national anthem of Korea.
In December 2012, the song was inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity program by UNESCO. This was followed by the Cultural Heritage Administration of Korea's announcement of a five-year plan to promote and preserve the song. The plan supports Arirang festivals by regional organizations with the purpose of building an archive for the song, promoting research grants, holding exhibitions, and so on. The song's first translation into singable lyrics in nine languages was performed in December 2013.
