About This Place
The Mount of Temptation rises up out of the Judean Desert 3km northwestern of Jericho in the West Bank not far from the Dead Sea. At the foot of the mount palm trees and lush vegetation grow and the yellow and orange hued mountain slopes rise 360 meters above sea level. The Mount of Temptation (Jabel Quruntul or Mount Quarantania) is famed as the site where the devil tempted Jesus to forsake God.
Visiting the Mount of Temptation
Visitors to the mount can take the cable car from Tel Jericho to the summit or hike up the mount which will take about an half hour. A visit to the Mount of Temptation is often combined with a visit to Jericho or the Dead Sea because of their proximity. The Greek Orthodox monastery was built into the side of one of the mount’s steep slopes so that it appears to be clinging miraculously to the side of the mount. The monastery encompasses a cave chapel which has survived from an earlier monastery and is said to be the site of the first temptation. At the south side of the monastery complex is a chapel built around the stone where Jesus sat during his spiritual contemplation. This is said to be where the third temptation took place. On the hillside above the monastery are the remains of a fortress originally built by the Greek Seleucid's (312BC-63BC) and later inhabited by the Hasmoneans (140BC-116BC). Here Simon Maccabeus was murdered in 135BC by his son-in-law. Simon was one of the Hasmoneans who led the revolt against the Seleucid rulers gaining a form of independence for the Jewish Hasmoneans in Judea. On top of the Hasmonean ruins stands a later wall built by the Greek Orthodox Church in the hope of establishing a second monastery on the mount.

Mount of Temptation Monastery in Jericho, Palestinian Territories
The Monastery of the Temptation is a Greek Orthodox monastery located in Jericho, Palestine. It was built on the slopes of the Mount of Temptation 350 meters above sea level, situated along a cliff overlooking the city of Jericho and the Jordan Valley.
It currently serves as a tourist attraction and its land is under the full jurisdiction of the Palestinian National Authority, although the monastery is owned and managed by the Greek Orthodox Church of Jerusalem.
Perched upon a sheer cliff face, Mount of Temptation Monastery looks out over panoramic views of the Jordan Valley, Dead Sea, and dramatic surrounding mountains. Regarded by the Orthodox church as the spot where the devil once tempted Jesus during the latter's 40-day fast, the site has existed in some form since 6 CE, developed and reconstructed over thousands of years. Ride the cable car or hike the steep 400 m incline to the summit. Once there, wonder at the impressive carving of the monastery, cut directly into the cliff face some 350 m above sea level.
Northwest of central Jericho, the hillside of Qarantal plays an important role in Christian tradition. This is a major point of interest for Christian visitors who know the hill as the Mount of Temptation, where Jesus Christ fasted after being baptized in the Jordan River by John the Baptist. In AD 340, St. Chariton built a chapel on the hill summit, and another was built by the cave in which Jesus is said to have sheltered. The Greek Orthodox Church acquired the site in 1875 and in 1895 built the Sarandarion Monastery (the name refers to the 40 days of Jesus' fast) halfway up the hill. From the monastery, a steep path runs up to the summit on which you can visit the remains of St. Chariton's original chapel. The views from the top across the arid hills are fantastic. For those that don't fancy the hike, the Jericho Cable Car runs from Jericho up to the summit, with excellent views across the countryside along the way.
It has interesting history by self.
A fortress built by the Seleucids called Doq stood at the summit of the mountain. It was captured by the Hasmoneans and it was here that Simon Maccabaeus was murdered by his son-in-law Ptolemy.
The earliest monastery was constructed by the Byzantines in the 6th century CE above the cave traditionally said to be that where Jesus spent forty days and forty nights fasting and meditating during the temptation of Satan, about three kilometers northwest of Jericho. The monastery receives its name from the mountain which the early Christians referred to as the Mount of the Temptation. The Mount of Temptation was identified by Augusta Helena of Constantinople as one of the holy sites in her pilgrimage in 326 CE.
Palestine, including Jericho, was conquered by the Arabs under the Islamic Caliphate of Umar ibn al-Khattab in the 630s.
When the Crusaders conquered the area in 1099, they built two churches on the site: one in a cave halfway up the cliff and a second on the summit. They referred to the site as Mons Quarantana (from Quaranta meaning forty in Italian, the number of days in the Gospel account of Jesus's fast).
The land upon which the modern monastery was built was purchased by the Orthodox Church in 1874. In 1895, the monastery was constructed around a crude cave chapel that marks the stone where Jesus sat during his fast.
The Orthodox Church, along with its Palestinian Orthodox followers purchaser,[dubious – discuss] originally attempted to build a church at the summit, but were unsuccessful; the unfinished walls of that church are located on a slope above the monastery.
As of 2002, three Orthodox monks were dwelling in the monastery and were guiding visitors to the site.
In 1998, a cable car was built from Jericho's Tell es-Sultan to the level of the monastery by an Austrian-Swiss company as a tourist attraction for the year 2000. At present there is a restaurant, a cafe and a souvenir shop at the monastery entrance for the tourists.

The DEAD SEA is a salt lake bordered by Jordan to the east and Israel and the West Bank to the west. It lies in the Jordan Rift Valley, and its main tributary is the Jordan River. Its surface and shores are 430.5 metres (1,412 ft) below sea level, Earth's lowest elevation on land. It is 304 m (997 ft) deep, the DEEPEST HYPERSALINE LAKE IN THE WORLD. With a salinity of 342 g/kg, or 34.2% (in 2011), it is one of the world's saltiest bodies of water – 9.6 times as salty as the ocean – and has a density of 1.24 kg/litre, which makes swimming similar to floating. This salinity makes for a harsh environment in which plants and animals cannot flourish, hence its name.
JERICHO is a city in the Palestinian Territories and is located near the Jordan River in the West Bank. It is believed to be ONE OF THE OLDEST INHABITED CITIES IN THE WORLD AND THE CITY WITH THE OLDEST KNOWN PROTECTIVE WALL IN THE WORLD. It was thought to have the oldest stone tower in the world as well, but excavations at Tell Qaramel in Syria have discovered stone towers that are even older. Jericho is described in the Hebrew Bible as the City of Palm Trees.
WADI QELT also Nahal Prat , formerly Naḥal Faran (Pharan brook), is a valley, riverine gulch or stream in the West Bank, originating near Jerusalem and running into the Jordan River near Jericho and the Dead Sea. Wadi Qelt is home to a unique variety of flora and fauna. St. George's Monastery and the royal winter palace complex built by the Hasmoneans and Herod the Great are located in the Wadi, which has been identified with the biblical Perath mentioned in Jeremiah 13:5

Welcome to Palestine , the cradle of Civilization, where West meets East, North meets South and where Judaism, Christianity and Islam took form. We welcome you in Palestine and hope that you enjoy our cultural richness, deeply compelling history and legendary hospitality.Over the centuries millions of people have come to visit this beautiful Holy Land and we are glad to welcome you among them.
May your stay in Palestine be filled with joyful days, nights and a lifetime of wonderful memories.
ClimateSituated in the Mediterranean, Palestine has a temperate sea climate. April and May bring some of the most beautiful wildflowers in the world. Wild poppies, jonquils, irises, and other vibrant species paint the hillsides with color during the short spring season. The rainy season in Palestine is between November and April. Occasionally it snows in Palestine but it doesn't stay long. To escape the cool weather in the winter season, you can go to Jericho, which is situated near the Dead Sea. Because of the wonderfully low humidity, the air in Palestine is dry. It is always a good idea to carry a bottle of water while hiking or walking during the day. In the summer months the night desert temperatures can get cool, so it is advisable to carry a lightweight jacket or sweater for the evenings.

The Monastery of Temptation is traditionally considered the site where Jesus (SAW) was tempted by the devil during his 40-day fast. The place is also sometimes referred to as Mount Quarantania or Jabal Quruntal in Arabic. Both names arise from the Latin word quarentena meaning 40. The site is said to be identified by Empress Helena of Constantinople during her pilgrimage in 326 AD.
There is a Greek Orthodox Church that clings to the mountain’s sheer face about 350 meters above sea level. The earliest monastery was constructed on the site by the Byzantines in the 6th century. Crusaders then built two churches: one in a cave half way up the cliff and the second on the summit of the mount. In 1895, the Greek Orthodox Monastery was constructed around a cave chapel that contains the stone where Jesus sat during his fast.
There are two ways to get to the Monastery, either by taking a cable car ride up or by climbing up the bare, rocky slopes of Jabal Quruntal to the Monastery, which takes only 15-30 minutes.

My name is Zahi Shaked
In 2000 I became a registered liscenced tourist guide.
My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.
Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.
In order to fulfill this calling in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)
Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, glide over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and see the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.
