I was in the area, so I decided to make a side trip to 812 ft. Jerimoth Hill, the Rhode Island state high point. Not much of a hike, since the HP is only a few minutes from the road, but hey, it's a state high point!

Jerimoth Hill (812 ft, 247 m) is the highest natural point (highpoint) in the US state of Rhode Island. Jerimoth Hill is located in the Providence County in the town of Foster, near the Connecticut-RI border.

Jerimoth Hill Jumpers

The journey to the summit of Rhode Island's highest peak is one of Mystery and Discovery. Happiness and Sorrow. Truth and Lies. Tall and Short. But mostly, it is 5 feet of elevation gain over 300 yards. You are rewarded with a view of the forest from beneath the trees. I found myself there. I also found a Coke can.

The villages which make up present-day Foster grew up around the flourishing local industries. Hopkins Mills was the first to develop in the early 1700's. Foster Center, the present seat of government, developed later in the 18th Century, and it was here that the first Foster town meeting was held in 1781. The village of Clayville took form in the early 19th Century, as did Moosup Valley, North Foster, and Mount Vernon.

Foster is rich in historic resources - houses, farmsteads, stone walls, roads, and mill ruins - and in the natural beauty of its setting - brooks, waterfalls, woods, swamps, and the plant and animal life they shelter. 812-foot Jerimoth Hill, the highest point in Rhode Island, is located in northwest Foster. A Sunday drive from Burrillville, RI to Glocester, RI through the village of Chepachet where we see a horrible rotary installed by RIDOT, then on to Jerimoth Hill, the highest point in the State of Rhode Island, all the way to the Connecticut State Line.
