Lisbon Jeronimos Monastery
While in Lisbon take a short trip to enjoy the Jeronimos Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This monumental church and monastery were built in 1502 by King Manuel, the great monarch of the Portuguese maritime discoveries. Tremendous riches pouring in from the spice trade with the Far East funded construction of this massive complex, which they say was “built out of pepper” but actually is made from white limestone.
It was designed in the late Gothic style but with a unique twist called Manueline, after the king, with elaborate carvings that reflect Portugal’s maritime discoveries, including fish, ropes, sails, tropical fruits, sea plants and other nautical details. It was built in homage to St. Jerome by the wealthy Religious Order of Christ, who were a continuation of the medieval Knights Templar.
Walking through the church is a goose-bump experience brought on by the astonishing, lofty interior space, supported by tall columns that soar heavenward and spread like trees in branching stone ribs at the top, forming a delicate, tracery pattern on the ceiling. The many Gothic arches are lined with twisted stone carved to look like sailor’s ropes. Several notable tombs inside include Vasco da Gama, King Manuel and other royals.

The monastery is one of the most prominent examples of the Portuguese Late Gothic Manueline style of architecture in Lisbon. It was classified a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with the nearby Tower of Belém, in 1983.
The construction of the monastery and church began on 6 January 1501, and was completed 100 years later. King Manuel originally funded the project with moneys obtained from the Vintena da Pimenta, a 5 percent tax on commerce from Africa and the Orient, equivalent to 70 kilograms of gold per year, with the exception of those taxes collected on the importation of pepper, cinnamon and cloves, which went directly to the Crown.

Mosteiro dos Jerónimos is a former monastery of the Order of Saint Jerome near the Tagus river in the parish of Belém, in Lisbon/Lisboa (Portugal).
The monastery is one of the most prominent examples of the Portuguese Late Gothic Manueline style of architecture in Lisbon. It was classified a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with the nearby Tower of Belém, in 1983.
It was originally built to support pilgrims who travelled in the region by Henry the Navigator; expanded from 1501 to serve as a resting-place for members of the House of Aviz; and as a church for seafearing adventurers who embarked during the Age of Discovery.
The church and the monastery, like the nearby Torre de Belém and Padrão dos Descobrimentos, symbolise the Portuguese Age of Discovery and are among the main tourist attractions of Lisbon.
Within the Church of Santa Maria, in the lower choir, are the stone tombs of the explorer Vasco da Gama (1468–1523), the first European to reach India by sea, and of the great poet Luís de Camões (1527–1570).
The Museu Nacional de Arqueologia (National Archaeological Museum) and the Museu da Marinha (Maritime Museum) now occupy the west wing of the monastery.

The monastery's richly decorated facade still shines out with all the glorious lustre of Portugal's courageous seamen and their remarkable voyages of discovery.

The Jerónimos Monastery (Mosteiro dos Jerónimos) is the most famous sight in Lisbon. It was built in the 16th century in the late gothic manueline style. The interior contains the tombs of the writer Luis de Camões and the navigator Vasco de Gama.
The church has three aisles covered by the same vault. The cloister is a masterwork of the same manueline style.
The monastery is a world heritage site by the UNESCO.

JERÓNIMOS MONASTERY:
It is the most impressive symbol of Portugal’s power and wealth during the Age of Discovery. King Manuel I built it in 1502 on the site of a hermitage founded by Prince Henry the Navigator, where Vasco da Gama and his crew spent their last night in Portugal in prayer before leaving for India in 1497. It was built to commemorate Vasco Da Gama’s voyage and to give thanks to the Virgin Mary for its success. Vasco da Gama’s tomb was placed inside by the entrance, as was the tomb of poet Luis de Camões, author of the epic “The Lusiads” in which he glorifies the triumphs of Vasco da Gama and his compatriots.
BELÉM TOWER: Built in 1515 as a fortress to guard the entrance to Lisbon’s harbour, the Belém Tower was the starting point for many of the voyages of discovery.
THE MONUMENT TO THE DISCOVERIES: It was designed in 1960 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of Prince Henry the Navigator. It represents a three-sailed ship ready to depart, with sculptures of important historical figures such as King Manuel I, Prince Henry, Poet Camões, Vasco da Gama and several other notable Portuguese explorers, crusaders and monks.
PASTÉIS DE BELÉM BAKERY: Since 1837, following an ancient secret recipe from the monks of Jerónimos Monastery, it started making the original “Pastéis de Belém” - Portuguese egg tart pastry dusted with cinnamon and sugar.
