JERPOINT ABBEY - Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny, Ireland
Established in 1180, Jerpoint Abbey was built for the Cistercian sect of Catholic monks by the King of Osraige on the site of an earlier Benedictine monastery. The remaining ruins date from different time periods, but all of them are impressive in their ability to last; the tower dates from the 15th century, the church from the 12th, and the transept chapels vary in age. After the Dissolution of Monasteries when the last abbot, Oliver Grace, surrendered the abbey during the reign of King Henry VIII, Jerpoint was given to the 9th Earl of Ormond and became primarily a place of interment.
Among the notable carvings in the ruins are the saintly religious reliefs known as “the weepers,” and a sarcophagus that is surrounded by medieval Christian reliefs. Many of the pillars and incidental spaces in the ruined abbey are covered in similar figure carvings. The expansive cloister arcade also remains and visitors can relax among the tranquil ruins. Despite some deterioration over the centuries, the Jerpoint Abbey ruins offer as contemplative an experience to modern visitors as the abbey did to the original clergy.
The Cistercians are an order of monks which were founded in the town of Citeaux, France in 1098. They are sometimes called “The White Monks” because of the color of their habits.
The Cistercians follow the ancient Rule of Saint Benedict, which comes from the 6th century. This is based on three central themes; peace, pray and work. They were very hard workers and would spend a lot of time working in their gardens to provide food for themselves. As they had no contact with the outside world, everything they needed was found within the abbey.

Jerpoint Abbey is a ruined Cistercian abbey, founded in the second half of the 12th century, near Thomastown, County Kilkenny, Ireland. It is located 2.5 km south west from Thomastown on the R448 regional road. There is a Visitor Centre with an exhibition. It has been declared a national monument and has been in the care of the Office of Public Works since 1880.
It was constructed by in 1180, by Donchadh Ó Donnchadha Mac Giolla Phátraic, the King of Osraige. It was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin. Jerpoint is notable for its stone carvings, including one at the tomb of Felix O'Dulany, Bishop of the Diocese of Ossory. The abbey flourished until the Dissolution of the Monasteries by the English king Henry VIII.
Jerpoint Abbey gives its name to the civil parish of Jerpoint Abbey or Abbey-Jerpoint in the barony of Knocktopher. It lies near the anciently corporate town of Newtown Jerpoint. The present ruins are very extensive and display some specimens of the later Norman passing into the early English style of architecture. Jerpoint is notable for its stone carvings, including one at the tomb of Felix O'Dulany, Bishop of the Diocese of Ossory.
There is a well-proportioned, square, embattled tower. The church with its Romanesque details dates from the 12th century. In the transept chapels are 13th to 16th century tomb sculptures. The tower and cloister date from the 15th century. In the Abbey is the sculptured cloister arcade with unique carvings.

This is a very well preserved 12th century Cistercian Abbey located on the banks of the Little Arrigle river, about 2km from Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny. Excellent quality stone carvings are evident plus some coloured plasterwork. The cloister arcade (partially reconstructed 1953) is one of the outstanding features, especially the carvings on many of the piers which range from human figures top grotesques.

Jerpoint Abbey is a short drive from Kilkenny Ireland. If you go, you will find the ruins of a Cistercian abbey that was founded in the late 12th century. Before entering you will go through the Visitor Center that we found hosted by a wonderful and knowledgeable woman that not only knew about the Jerpoint Abbey, but also several other sites nearby.
Jerpoint is well known for its stone carvings, square and embattled tower. Jerpoint is a national monument and has been run by the Office of Public works since 1880.
When we visited it was raining slightly, but we literally had the entire place to ourselves. Please visit and pass the word, this is not to be missed if you are near Kilkenny Ireland.

Close to Croan Cottages ~ Thomastown, Jerpoint Abbey +
It's not necessary to go far from Croan Cottages to experience a sample of all Ireland has to offer. Jerpoint Abbey is just outside Thomastown and is one of the best examples of a Cistercian ruin to be found in all Ireland. Founded in 1158 -1180 with additions to the site in the 14th and 15th centuries, the Abbey sits on the River Arrigle and is steeped in history. On to Thomastown, or Baile Mhic Andain in Irish, which is the second largest town in Kilkenny County and a wonderful place to shop for your groceries and supplies for the cottage, to stop in for a pint or to dine out. Across the bridge stop in at the Coach House for a tasty lunch or dinner and give them my regards. Thomastown sits on the River Nore and you can't miss the ruin of the 13th Century Gothic Church as you come into the town. Tullaherin Monastic Site is also close by and the roundtower dates from the early 9th century. There is not much doubt that this site was dedicated to Saint Kieran but there is some argument as to whether he is buried there or not. It seems possible as one source of the name is purported to be Tulach Chiarain in Irish meaning, The Mound of St. Kieran. Mount Juliet is also worth a visit with 15oo acres of gardens and woodland it is an old estate made into a lovely hotel with many amenities including a lovely golf course.
