Historic Maryland: Jerusalem Mill Village
Some really interesting Maryland history here!! What I like to consider a feelgood video-folks enjoying a great location on a great Sunday! With history-and live music-to boot! Come take a tour of the area with us!
After our noisy arrival, we first check out the blacksmith shop (with authenic demo). We then go out to the adjoining meadow where live music is performed on Sundays from April till September (a sign says the meadow was reserved that day for a church group-but we still went!) where an unknown solo performer plays a couple great numbers! I was in a band in 1972 that played the second song!
We then take a tour of the gun shop, which once manufactured arms for Maryland regiments during the Revolutionary War. You'll learn the origin of a commom expression here! Behind the shop there are tobacco fields (controversial crop?). All our tours are guided by folks in period dress. Listen for male toads calling their girlfriends!
Then, a tour of the mill. There are many interpretive displays inside. This mill manufactured flour, until the mega-corporations put it out of business! A couple previous mills occupied this site; this one having been completed in 1772. We'll go down the basement where water wheels once provided power for the machinery. In later years, the water wheels were used to power electric generators. It operated as a mill until the early 1960s. This mill was heavily refurbished in the 1980s and is in phenomenal shape today.
We then step back outside for our obligatory walk to the Jericho Road Covered Bridge, while some folks enjoy the Little Gunpowder Falls. We walk the Little Gunpowder Trail to the bridge (SORRY-the bridge ain't haunted!!) then walk through it! I believe this bridge was also refurbished in the 1980s as the mill was. Originally built in 1865. Both the mill and the bridge are on the National Register of Historic Places.
Across the mill was McCourtney's Store which once sold supplies. This is also the site of General Harry Gilmore's raid, and reenactments are held yearly.
And, lastly, we'll see the original mill race which supplied the water power for the mill, drawn from the Little Gunpowder.
Also featured: old barn ruins (with walls tumbling down) and former millworkers' houses.
So join us for a fun day at the mill!

Historic Jericho Covered Bridge Walk-around 5/31/14
The Jericho Covered Bridge is a Burr arch through truss wooden covered bridge near Jerusalem, Harford County and Kingsville, Baltimore County, Maryland, near historic Jerusalem Mill Village. It was built in 1865 and became National Register of Historic Places in 1978. This is some video I took on my visit to the bridge during a hike at Gunpowder Falls State Park on 5/31/14
Jericho Bridge at Jerusalem Mill 2010: #1 of 8 Ain't Nobody Gonna Miss Me
Here is the first video in a series of 8 of the Baltimore area Bluegrass band Jericho Bridge performing at Jerusalem Mill in Harford County MD (yes-they derived their name from the supposedly haunted Jericho Covered Bridge nearby though I've heard no stories of the bridge being haunted myself in 30 years of crossing it). This is from a July 4 2010 concert that's part of Jerusalem Mill's Summer Concert Series. Sorry about the sound quality-this and the other 7 videos were recorded with a Kodak digital still camera that has Hi-Def video capability, as long as one can keep it in focus. Jericho Bridge are: John Alexander-vocals/guitar/fiddle, Brian Pelisek-acoustic bass/rhythm guitar, Tom Beers-mandolin/guitar/vocals and Tom Lather-banjo/vocals. If you like what you hear you may get more info about the band at jerichobridge.com. You can also order a CD by the band at that website.
If you really like this I'll soon be offering the DVD of their entire performance featuring many more songs. All are incredible performances. Be sure to watch in 720p Hi-Def.

Jericho Covered Bridge - haunted runaway slaves
So we went to Jericho Covered Bridge off of Jerusalem road. Legend has it you can see a body hanging in the rear view mirror when you cross the bridge. Also there's a story about hearing the runaway slaves that were caught torturous screams. We didn't though.
Jericho covered bridge reopens
Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz and Harford County Executive Barry Glassman celebrate the grand re-opening of the Jericho covered bridge.
