A hiking trail in Israel offers a unique blend of stunning views with historic perspective. The so-called Jesus Trail attracts thousands of tourists from around the world every year, especially during the holiday season. Seth Doane laced up his shoes to embark on an adventure of bibilical proportions.

Along the Jesus Trail in the Holy Land's Galilee Region
St. Jerome (347-420 AD) said, “Five gospels record the life of Jesus; four you will find in books and the one you will find in the Holy Land they: read the fifth gospel and the world of the four will open to you.
One of the best ways to understand Jesus and the Gospels is by visiting the Holy Land. And an even better way is to do it on foot.
The Jesus Trail is a 65-km (40-mi) hiking trail in the Galilee region of Israel that connects sites from the life of Jesus in addition to other historical and religious places. Walking in the Holy Land is an alternative to a busy and crowded bus tour.
The route begins where Jesus was raised in Nazareth and passes through Zippori National Park, Cana, Ilaniya, Kibbutz Lavi, the Horns of Hattin, Nebi Shu’eib, Arbel National Park, Migdal, Ginosar, Tabgha, the Mount of Beatitudes, and finishes in Capernaum -- the town of Jesus -- where Christ lived with the disciples during his three year period of active ministry.
Walk the same rugged terrain and gaze on the beautiful landscapes of the Galilee that Christ himself did. On the Jesus Trail, you will connect in an intimate way with the Life of Christ by walking (literally) in his footsteps.

Wow, what an adventure we have had so far traveling all around Israel. For those who have been going through the journey with us, you know we spent a month in Jerusalem seeing the unbelievable historical sites of the biblical times. Seeing history come to life is so amazing.
Currently, we are in Tiberias, where we have been for the past two weeks. We have enjoyed the beaches and hikes all around the Sea of Galilee. No words can really describe how awesome it is to be walking where Jesus did most of his teaching from.
In our next vlog, we will take you to more fascinating historical sites around the Sea of Galilee. Stay tuned as there is still so much to explore of Israel.

What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, glide over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and see the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.

In the region of Tabgha, on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee, lies the Church of the Multiplication of Loaves and Fishes, the traditional site of the food multiplication story found in all four gospels (Matthew 14:13-21, Mark 6:31-44, Luke 9:10-17, John 6:5-15). It is also where Jesus appeared to his disciples after his resurrection (John 21:1-17).
The church is most famous for a mosaic of loaves and fishes from the original mid-third century church. The church was expanded in the fifth century, but soon after destroyed by the Persians when they invaded in 614. The Byzantine structures and mosaics were excavated in the 1930s by a German team. In 1982, the current reconstruction was added. The original mosaics depict water birds and plants, ecology of the marshy swamps typical of the area historically.
The name Tabgha is a variation on its ancient Greek name, Heptapegon, meaning “seven springs.” Six of these springs have been identified in modern times, including one known as “Job’s Spring.”
Fourth-century pilgrim Egeria’s account of visiting Tabgha:
“In the same place (not far from Capernaum) facing the Sea of Galilee is a well watered land in which lush grasses grow, with numerous trees and palms. Nearby are seven springs which provide abundant water. In this fruitful garden Jesus fed five thousand people with five loaves of bread and two fish.”

The Jesus Trail is a hiking and pilgrimage trail in the Galilee region of Israel that traces the route Jesus may have walked, connecting many sites from his life and ministry. The main part of the trail begins in Nazareth and passes through Sepphoris (Zippori), Cana, Kibbutz Lavi, the Horns of Hattin, Mount Arbel Cliffs, the Sea of Galilee, Mount of Beatitudes, Capernaum, Tiberias, Moshava Kinneret, the Jordan River, Kfar Kish, and Mount Tabor before circling back into Nazareth.
The trail is designed as a pilgrimage route that allows for a more personal experience of the Galilee and sites from the life of Jesus. It is, however, not limited to this perspective. It also integrates historical and cultural sites from different eras, sites sacred to other religions, natural and ecological niches, and breathtaking panoramas so hikers with an interest in history, science, or those simply seeking a physical challenge in a new and unique environment will find it exciting.
The length of the route can vary from 40 (65 km) to 100 miles (161 km). This route was closer to the latter.

Around The Sea of Galilee - Jesus Trail with Zahi Shaked
The Sea of Galilee lies on the ancient Via Maris, which linked Egypt with the northern empires. The Greeks, Hasmoneans, and Romans founded flourishing towns and settlements on the land-locked lake including Gadara, Hippos and Tiberias. The first-century historian Flavius Josephus was so impressed by the area that he wrote, One may call this place the ambition of Nature. Josephus also reported a thriving fishing industry at this time, with 230 boats regularly working in the lake.
Much of the ministry of Jesus occurred on the shores of Lake Galilee. In those days, there was a continuous ribbon development of settlements and villages around the lake and plenty of trade and ferrying by boat. The Synoptic gospels of Mark (1:14-20), Matthew (4:18-22), and Luke (5:1-11) describe how Jesus recruited four of his apostles from the shores of Lake Galilee: the fishermen Simon and his brother Andrew and the brothers John and James. His disciples were the ones who caught the boatload of fish. One of Jesus' famous teaching episodes, the Sermon on the Mount, is supposed to have been given on a hill overlooking the lake. Many of his miracles are also said to have occurred here including his walking on water, calming the storm, and his feeding five thousand people (in Tabgha).
In 135 CE the second Jewish revolt against the Romans was put down. The Romans responded by banning all Jews from Jerusalem. The center of Jewish culture and learning shifted to the region of the Kinneret, particularly the city of Tiberias. It was in this region that the so-called Jerusalem Talmud is thought to have been compiled.
In the time of the Byzantine Empire, the lake's significance in Jesus' life made it a major destination for Christian pilgrims. This led to the growth of a full-fledged tourist industry, complete with package tours and plenty of comfortable inns.
The lake's importance declined when the Byzantines lost control and area came under the control of the Umayyad Caliphate and subsequent Islamic empires. Apart from Tiberias, the major towns and cities in the area were gradually abandoned.[citation needed] The palace Khirbat al-Minya was built by the lake during the reign of the Umayyad caliph al-Walid I (705-715 CE). In 1187, Saladin defeated the armies of the Crusades at the Battle of Hattin, largely because he was able to cut the Crusaders off from the valuable fresh water of the Sea of Galilee

Capernaum, the town of Jesus
Kefar Nahum is the town which was the center of Jesus’ ministry in northern Galilee and the town of where Peter’s mother-in-law lived.
Located on the north-west side of the lake of Galilee, the ruins of Capernaum are divided into two sites: the Franciscan and the Greek Orthodox.
Unlike Jerusalem and other touristy ancient places in Israel, Capernaum seems to be untouched, still in its raw form. Just by walking here, and looking at the lake, the hills, the mountains, we felt connected to its history. It is as if we could almost see Jesus walking on these shores, looking at the same hills.
And besides the breathtaking nature, Capernaum has fascinating ruins. A 4th-century synagogue built on top of the original one where Jesus taught, a house which is believed to be the house of Simon Peter the apostle, and much more.

Jericho to Jerusalem, walking the ancient trail of the Good Samaritan
We attempt to walk from Jericho to Jerusalem along the ancient path which the Good Samaritan would have taken. An epic 2-day journey via the Wadi Qelt (River Kelt) and Saint George Monastery!
This hike follows a narrow path between the mountains for over 30 miles (50km). And in the midst of the empty wilderness, we found water!
