Coast Guard: 67-foot boat runs aground off Everett

EVERETT, Wash. (AP) — A 67-foot, wooden pleasure boat ran aground near the Everett Marina after its operator miscalculated its position, the Coast Guard said Saturday.
The Cape Caution, built in 1939, ran aground in shallow water about 500 feet offshore Friday night. The operator of the vessel managed to get safely to land in a dinghy, but the boat began to list and then was declared to have sunk as the tide came in at about 4 a.m. Saturday.
The Coast Guard responded to help ensure any pollution from the incident was contained, and state Department of Ecology officials were also monitoring the response. An estimated 100 gallons of diesel was on board, but no spill was immediately reported and Global Diving and Salvage of Seattle surrounded the vessel with boom.
The operator reported that he miscalculated the boat's position while entering the Snohomish River.
Global Diving and Salvage workers managed to seal the vents on the vessel to make sure no fuel leaked and were considering whether to try to re-float the vessel, Ecology spokesman Dieter Bohrmann said. A photo posted on the department's Twitter feed showed it continuing to list Saturday, but not fully submerged.
The fuel tank appears to be intact, he said. That's the good news.

May 9, 2019 New England Fishing Report with Toby Lapinski
Be sure to follow the weekly fishing reports across New England at
We have a lot going on once again this week in New England, and I have the first subscriber video contributor joining up this week as you’ll see in just a moment. If you would like to provide reports with either videos or photos, shoot me an email at tlapinski@thefisherman.com and we can discuss the details.
I am going to start off this week’s reports with some freshwater action as TJ Biroscak sent me some great pictures of his son, Jackson, who has been hammering the trout in Connecticut lately. Just in the last week he has landed brook, brown, rainbow and golden trout at several spots in the Milford/New Haven area. Congrats, Jackson, and we look forward to seeing more pictures of your catches this season!
Switching gears to the salt, fishing broke wide open on pretty much everything. Starting with striped bass, James Leduc sent me a picture of a 29-inch striper that he landed off Charlestown Breachway this week. I received good reports on bass to about 33 or 34 inches from the Pawcatuck River, down the South County beaches and up into Narragansett.
Over on the east side of the bay, subscriber TJ Kopecky checks-in this week with a video report. Thanks, TJ! Again, if you’d like to contribute to the weekly videos, shoot me an email at tlapinski@thefisherman.com and we can get started.
Just to the north of TJ, Josh Goncalves sent me an email to report finding acres of bass to about 29 inches on Saturday. The bass were very picky, but he managed to tempt a few before switching gears to bottom fishing where he loaded up on 12- to 15-inch scup and tautog to 8 pounds. He went back after the tog on Sunday off Westport and was able to put together a 2-man limit in about 40 minutes of fihsing. He noted 55-degree water in upper Buzzards Bay but only about 50 degrees in the lower bay.
Up on the Cape, I heard from Fisherman subscriber Justin Cooper who took a road trip down from Maine over the weekend. He found a good bite of fresh striped bass, all of which were covered in sea lice. The squid boats off the south side of the Cape have been doing well the last few days so I expect to hear of some bluefish joining in on the action soon, too.
Changing over from bass to flounder, the fishing finally improved a little bit this week around Boston. Alan Sharaf boated his first flounder of the season with Capt. Jason Colby on a cool, windy trip on Tuesday. The bite is still a bit behind where it should be, but the fish are being caught despite some heavy pressure from the draggers. Remember that the 11th Annual Zobo Flounder Derby, which is hosted by Fishing Finatics in Everett, MA, is set for May 18, and you can visit for all of the details.
And last up this week, the haddock bite has been getting a little better each day in the Gulf of Maine. Capt. Tony Guarino of Booked Off Charters in Rhode Island took a ride up to Green Harbor to fish with some friends. They ground out a 3-man limit of fish but the highlight of the day was when Chris hooked into something heavy around 11 am. After almost a 30-minute battle he finally had the fish to the surface which turned out to be an 80-pound halibut, the first one of which I have heard about this season. Congratulations to Chris on the awesome catch!
Remember that if I didn’t get to your species or location of choice this week, you can always check out the complete fishing reports from Maine to the Mid-Atlantic at

Pattaya police were called out on the evening of Sunday 19th July to investigate an incident involving a pleasure boat running aground on South Pattaya Beach at high speed and nearly hitting tourists walking on the sand. On investigation, the police found the boat called Itty Under 4 on the beach with its engine still running, and the captain inside the cabin, in a very drunken state. Captain Kumpar, aged 51, was eventually taken off the vessel to the police station to face questions. The harbour office was contacted and they confirmed that the captain did have a license to captain the boat. Therefore, because it was his first offense, he was banned for 6 months, and after that if he is caught again drunk in charge of the boat, he will face a lifetime ban.

December 2, 2014 New England Fishing Report with Toby Lapinski
The December issue of the fisherman magazine is due out this week and it is jam-packed with holiday gift ideas. From surf to boat, freshwater to bluewater, we have it all and more.
We also have some excellent new content added on the fisherman.com for your reading pleasure. First up is a look at the new NY state record tog, a 22.53-pound beast, which also adorns this month’s cover of the magazine. In the article our very own captain Joe Wenegenofsky makes some very interesting points on a trend in truly massive blackfish over the last few years.
Next up is a look at an angler for whom I have looked up to for much of my fishing career, Larry Dahlberg. From his Hunt For Big Fish TV show to his forward-thinking lure design, Larry Dahlberg has always pushed the limits of targeting big fish and he has influenced many anglers.
Connecticut
Fishin' Factory 3 reports some very good pike fishing still going on along the Connecticut River in the coves, feeder creeks and marinas. This is a great time for both shore and boat anglers alike to land a massive water wolf.
The Black Hawk has been fishing off Block Island and they have been running up some awesome catches of sea bass, cod to 20-plus pounds. Captain Greg Debrule’s new boat has opened up a lot of new fishing opportunities sailing out of Niantic, CT, and he plans to continue to sail as long as weather allows and the bite holds up.
Rhode Island
From Snug Harbor Marina we got word of steady blackfish action off the Newport shoreline. They are also doing a number on black sea bass which seem to be just about everywhere this year. Fortunately the sea bass season remains open through the end of the year.
Galilee B&T tells us that there is still a ton of bait working the south county shoreline but there is simply little to nothing being seen feeding on it. I have heard of herring, bunker and silversides in the wash, but bass are really only being found inside the local salt ponds.
Massachusetts
The crew up at The Sports Port in Hyannis tells us of some awesome oystering on the Cape right now and the shop has everything that you could possibly need to take advantage of this bounty of the sea. They also had some anglers stopping by for freshwater gear as trout and bass action on the Cape has been excellent of late.
Fishing Finatics in Everett reports that there are still tuna to be had off the southwest corner of Stellwagen as shown by the 66-incher landed by Captain Doctor Greg Brick over the weekend. The fish was caught on a live mackerel and they broke off another large fish just prior to hooking up with that fish. Pollock fishing has been very good in the GOM as that fishery remains open despite the closure of cod and haddock.

October 28, 2014 New England Fishing Report with Toby Lapinski
I might sound like a broken record player, but once again the best bite in Connecticut waters this week is the excellent blackfishing being experienced across the state. Bobby J’s in Milford reports some absolute lights-out fishing going on at the West Haven breakwaters with some anglers reporting catching upwards of 60 fish on a boat of three to four anglers (obviously only retaining their limit.) Fisherman’s Paradise in Branford also reports some awesome blackfishing as well in their area. Shop regular John Frione nailed a pair of fish weighing 10.05 and 11.35 pounds and Chris Jensen had a pair of tautog going 10.95 and 9.35 pounds. Congrats guys!
Over in Rhode Island there is word of more excellent blackfish action off the South County coast with some mixed-bag action supplementing the catches for the party boats. Both The Frances Fleet and the Seven B’s out of Point Judith report regular blackfish pool winners going over 10 pounds and most trips are peppering in cod, sea bass, scup and even a few massive fluke at times. One angler this past week had an epic fluke double-header consisting of fish of 8-plus and 10-plus pounds!
Up in Massachusetts there are still regular reports of striped bass being caught north of Cape Cod. Pete Santini of Fishing Finatics in Everett got word of blitzing bass throughout the week off Revere Beach, Presidents Road, Deer Island, Amelia Earhart Dam and Long Island. Tomo’s Tackle up in Salem also reports some good bassing to the north with bass to 20-plus-pounds being caught around Cape Ann. It goes to show us that there are still plenty of bass to the north and barring any major weather events we should see the season push on through November and beyond across New England.
Casino Boat Runs Aground 2014 - The Escapade Maiden Vvoyage
A Casino Boat Runs Aground Off Georgia Coast, The Escapade Casino Boat Runs Aground out on its maiden voyage out of Savannah, Ga
------------------------------------
The Escapade, operated by Florida-based Tradewinds Casino Cruise, set out on its maiden voyage out of Savannah, Ga., on Tuesday night.
It ran aground early Wednesday about 1.8 miles off Tybee Island, in the Calibogue Sound near the Georgia-South Carolina border, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
As of 3 p.m., four people have been placed on a Coast Guard helicopter, including a possible stroke victim, a man with a cane, one with a walker, and one with a brace, reports WTOC, the CBS affiliate in Savannah, Ga.
They were placed on the helicopter because they were not able to be placed to one of the smaller rescue boats. Some passengers are being shuttled to a Coast Guard cutter via small rubber zodiacs, according to the Savannah Morning News.
The original plan had been to tow the Escapade back to shore with all 123 passengers and crew members on board, but that idea was scuttled when tow lines broke.
