Maybe it is just me... but this dancing Santa Claus machine dressed as a hasidic Jew was perhaps a bit out of place as an exhibit at the entrance to the Jewish Museum of Odessa Ukraine?

An Private Walk Through Odessa with Olga
I arranged a private walking tour with Olga, Odessawalks.com, to visit Jewish Odessa. Even though the Viking Lomonosov offered a Jewish Odessa, I prefer a private individualized tour whenever possible; to linger or move along at uninteresting sights. Somehow, the Jewish Tour mushroomed into touring Central Odessa in depth and an added Ukrainian Food Tour! Steve and I are always up for food, especially, wonderful Ukrainian food as promised by Olga.
Olga met us at the dock and we began walking on a great day in Odessa...
Odessa Archaeological Museum, Odessa, Ukraine.
Odessa Archaeological Museum, one of the oldest in Ukraine, was founded in 1825. Its development was promoted by the Odessa Society of antiquity and history, which had the right to carry out excavations in the Northern Black Sea Region.
There are more than 160 000 exhibits. They are the basis of one of the largest collection of information sources about ancient history of Northern Black Sea region. The muzeum possesses rich collection of archaeological relics of primitive and classical culture, relics of ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece and Rome, besides there is a large and valuable collection of coins and medals. The best antique sculptures are exhibited in the vestibule of the building, specially built for the muzeum in 1883.
A Walk Through Odessa's Jewish Heritage
The most influential Jewish citizens in Odessa were the Brodsky, Rafalovic and Efrussi families. These people began as traders, money lenders and tailors before becoming grain traders. Olga walked us by their former palatial mansions and the Brodsky Synagogue, the first Reformed Synagogue and the first with an organ!
The Synagogue was turned into city archives by the Bolsheviks, and still remains such. If the shelves were removed, the building would probably collapse. From there to an area where Issak Babel, the famous Russian writer once lived. Babel was tortured and shot by the Bolsheviks after confessing to being a terrorist and spy in 1940.

Walking on Jewish Street in Odessa
Streets in Odessa were genuinely named after whatever ethnic group lived on it; Jewish Street, Greek Street, Bulgarian Street, and so on. During Soviet times, Jewish Street in the Moldavanka section of Odessa, was renamed Babel Street after Issak Babel, the renowned writer who also happened to be a loyal Communist member. The street reverted to its original name during the 1950s.
The Great Synagogue is on Jewish Street; built on the spot where the first wooden synagogue stood. During Soviet times, the synagogue was turned into a woman's gymnasium. Visitors are allowed to enter.
An interesting tidbit of information about Jewish Street - The former, very antisemitic KGB is located here. When Babel Street was renamed Jewish Street, they moved their entrance so as not to have an address on Jewish Street!

Odessa's Jewish past and present
This city on the shores of the Black Sea became home to a diverse group of people - Albanians, Armenians, Azeris, Bulgarians, Crimean Tatars, Frenchmen, Germans, Greeks, Italians, Poles, Romanians, Russians, Turks, Ukrainians - and Jews. Odessa.
Today, we revisit Odessa's Jewish history.
Odessa Jewish Heritage: The Holocaust Memorial
The Odessa Holocaust Memorial has several sections that commemorates both those who died and an Avenue of Saints, or the righteous, who risked their lives to save their fellowmen. Birch trees with the names of these righteous people have been planted in this memorial.
There is also a Star of David built by an Israeli who survived to build this monument.
Over 200,000 Odessa Jews were marched by Nazis during the beginning of World War II from the center to a Ghetto established outside of Odessa down what is called the Street of Death. It was winter time and people were marched without shoes or proper clothing; those who fell were either shot or clubbed to death.

Olga's Walking Tour Through Odessa: Pushkin, Historic Hotels and Palace.mov
Olga, Odessawalks.com, continued leading Steve and myself through through an exclusive area in Odessa. Like today, the rich preferred to stay in their own enclaves and we walked by hotels named after famous hotels in Europe, and Vorontsov's Odessa Palace (not open to visit).
Vorontsov and his family would breakfast in their grandiose pavilion each morning where Prince Vorontsov could keep an eye on ship traffic in the bay below.
There was just so much to see in Odessa and only one short day to do it all...

Ceremonious key of the historic Brodsky Synagogue being handed to the Jewish Community of Odessa.
Built in 1863, the Brodsky Synagogue was taken from the Jewish Community in 1920 along with all other houses of worship, and was later turned into the State Archive during WWII.
After drastic renovations, the building will house the Chabad Lubavitch Congregation of Odessa, and The Odessa Jewish Museum and Tolerance Center.
