Anchang old town is located in Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province of China. This is the area where I grew up in my early age, a historical community without any cars around. Many places in the area has been torn down and embraced the modernization (wider roads and tall buildings), at least this place was preserved. Wish China can learn more from Italy to preserve the old historical sites / cities / towns, best example was Rome. Regarding to the nature of canal town, it is designed for walking and boats only, very similar to Venice. Adding all the narrow streets and stone bridges everywhere, it brought itself even closer to Venice development style, even all areas are on the total opposite side of the world.
Shaoxing area is quite developed in terms of water canal system, historically they have been used for transportation of goods and passengers by Wupengchuan (grey cover boats). With the current modernization of China, it does bring benefits of high speed railway connection to the area, making the travel from Shanghai / Beijing / Hangzhou to Shaoxing area faster, convenient and affordable.
