Jianshui Ancient Town (Yunnan)

Jianshui 建 水 is 220 km south of Kunming 昆 明, capital of Yunnan Province 雲 南 省.
The Nazhao State 南 詔 國 (738-937) built the city of Huili 惠 歷 in the present location of Jianshui during the Tang Dynasty 唐 代 (618-907). In Yi language, Hui Li means Vast Sea, which has been translated into Jian Shui 建 水 in Han language, the Standard Chinese.
Jianshui was a Zhou 州 or Prefecture in the Yuan Dynasty 元 朝 (1271-1368), renamed to Lin An Fu 臨 安 府 in the Ming Dynasty 明 朝 (1368-1644) and dropped to the county 縣 level by the Qing Dynasty 清 朝 (1644-1911).
Jianshui County is now under the jurisdiction of the Honghe Hani Yi Autonomous Prefecture 红 河 哈 尼 族 彝 族 自 治 州 in the Yunnan Province 雲 南 省.
The Jianshui Ancient Town is fondly called Lin An, for keeping its traditional style from the Ming era.

April 2014: Southern Yunnan, China
This is a travel report from April 2014 where I visited the southern part of Yunnan Province, China.
It includes the spectacular Rice Terraces of Yuanyang, the Ancient City of Jianshui and Xishuangbanna with the famous Water Splashing Festival.

Jianshui to Yuanyang expressway is a Y shape expressway,start from Jianshui and Gejiu city,end in Nansha town,Yuanyang county:

建水（个旧）到元阳高速公路是一条Y型高速公路，位于云南南部，桥隧比高达75%左右。难点在当地高差太大，建水和个旧位于云贵高原上海拔1800米左右，元阳在红河峡谷里海拔只有200米，中间的山脉海拔2000多米。直线几十公里内须克服两千米左右的高差，“一山有四季、十里不同天”说的就是云南山高谷深的地貌。为克服高差，全线几乎桥隧相连，包括主跨700米，高228米的红河大桥和许多高墩梁桥，以及螺旋隧道。
这条高速尽头的元阳县位于红河谷底，被高出河谷数千米的高山团团环抱，原先交通极为不便，是高速公路禁区。不久后将有5个方向高速公路通车：元江方向（西北向，远期延伸到四川攀枝花），建水方向（北上到昆明的直路），个旧方向（东出两广的大道），河口方向（东南向连接越南首都河内），绿春方向（南达西双版纳景洪，出境至老挝和泰国）。还有元阳机场在建。

Shaxi 沙 溪, Jianchuan, Dali, Yunnan Province 雲 南 省
In Yunnan, the Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture 大 理 白 族 自 治 州 administers 12 county-level divisions, one of which is Jianchuan County 劍 川 縣.
Jianchuan has 5 towns and 3 villages under its jurisdiction and one of them is Shaxi. The ethnic groups in Shaxi are predominantly Bai 白 族 and Yi 彝 族.
Tea-Horse Ancient Road 茶 馬 古 道 and Shaxi 沙 溪
Yunnan 雲 南 and Sichuan 四 川 were the first tea producers in the world. Tea was traded for horses from Tibet 西 藏 and the trade route of Tea-Horse Ancient Road was thus formed.
Shaxi is an old market town and the best preserved and complete Tea-Horse Ancient Town in the world. The World Monuments Fund has put Shaxi on the watch list since 2001.
Getting There and Away – Shaxi 沙 溪
The gateway to Shaxi is Jianchuan County 劍 川 縣. The green rural van charges CNY 13 for the trip of 31 km.
Jianchuan is 60 km from Lijiang 麗 江 and 120 km from Xiaguan下 關, which is commonly called Dali City 大 理 市. Both prefecture-cities 州 市 have regular buses wit Jianchuan. It worked out quite well for me, as I came from Lijiang and after Shaxi, I would head to Dali Old Town 大 理 古 鎮 on the bus to Xiaguan.

The Tea-Horse Ancient Town 茶 馬 古 鎮 is on Sideng Street. The old town square still has the original architecture intact.
After settling in my guest house, I ventured out to comb every part of the town and the adjacent villages.

建水紫陶 Jian Shui Purple clay
Wan Yao village, locates in Jian Shui County, Hong He city, YunNan province, is well-known for its purple clay. Each person is artist there, dedicating to those fabulous tea utensils.
Jian Shui purple clay is considered to be one of the four famous types of Chinese pottery and represents the traditional folk art and Chinese painting.
