TAIWAN VLOG: Day 1 (Part 2) | Taipei 101, Elephant Mountain, Shilin Night Market
Here's the part 2 of our Day 1 in Taiwan! We had so much fun exploring the city from day to night.
TAIPEI 101 was once the tallest skyscraper in the world until the completion of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. The view on the observatory deck is so amazing!! If you want to visit Taipei 101, take the MRT Red Line to Taipei 101/World Trade Center Station. You have to pay 600 NTD (Adult) each to go up the observatory. A bit pricey, but it's worth it!
From Taipei 101 to Elephant Mountain! It's just one station away, so it's not that far. Take the MRT Red Line to Xiangshan and walk until you reach the starting point of the hiking trail. There are directions on the road so there is no chance you'll get lost.
TIP: Bring water! Wear comfy shoes & clothes. The trail is so exhausting lol
Elephant Mountain to Shilin Night Market:
Shilin Night Market is one of the famous night markets in Taipei. To go there, take the MRT Red Line to Jiantan (take note!! Jiantan, not Shilin). It's our mistake that we got off at Shilin station not knowing it's soooo far. We had to take a long walk just to reach the night market.

Jiantan Trail. Taipei, Taiwan
An alternative to the so crowded Elephant Mountain hiking trail in Taipei, the views of Taipei city are equally as beautiful. This hiking trail is really close to Jiantan station on the red line, making it a very convenient half-day hike, and if you finish in the evening, you can head to Shilin night market as you'll be right across it.
Shilin Night Market
Shilin Night Market
Take the Red Line to Jiantan Station (劍潭), not Shilin Station. After leaving Exit 1, diagonally cross the street to the left to enter the night market. Remember Shilin Night Market is at Jiantan Station, not Shilin Station.
The Shilin Night Market in Taipei is one of the largest, most popular night markets in Taiwan with regard to food, and also one of the most popular points of Taipei's night life among visitors. Located in Taipei’s Shilin District, a mere 70 metres from MRT Jiantan Station between Dadong Rd, Danan Rd, Wenlin Rd, and Jihe Rd. The maze of alleyways is filled with a variety of local, traditional, and international merchandise that attract locals and foreigners alike.
The night market consists of two major elements: general merchandise and local cuisine. Along the western edge of the market is the Shilin Night Market Food Court (士林夜市B1美食區), an underground food paradise. (Source : guidetotaipei.com)

Shilin Night Market, Taipei
Had an awesome night food trippin here at Shilin Night Market. I always smell the stinky smell of the Stinky Tofu every time I pass by Mong Kok or Jordan area in Hong Kong but it was my first time to ever taste it in Taipei. Some of the street foods are actually cheaper compared to Raohe Night Market. Lucky for us we didn't bring our son with us, for sure it'll be a very long night if he was able to see the games he could play. Never expected that they serve grilled chicken skin here, so that made my night.
Bought some of our souvenirs items here as well. So if you're in Taipei or planning to travel there, would suggest you'll get it here.
It's just around 5mins walk across Jihe Road from Jian Tan MRT Station.
Please feel free to comment below and share your experience of the place.

⁴ᴷ⁶⁰ Exploring Taipei, Taiwan : Taipei Main Station to Shilin Night Market (December 15, 2019)
As a native New Yorker traveling to Taiwan for the first time, I take the Taipei Metro from Taipei Main Station to the Shilin Night Market during my first day.
From Wikipedia:
Shilin (Shihlin) Night Market (Chinese: 士林夜市; pinyin: Shìlín Yèshì) is a night market in Shilin District, Taipei, Taiwan, and is often considered to be the largest and most famous night market in Taiwan.
The night market encompasses two distinct sections sharing a symbiotic relationship: a section formerly housed in the old Shilin Market building, containing mostly food vendors and small restaurants; and the surrounding businesses and shops selling other nonfood items. The food court holds 539 stalls, and the second floor serves as a parking lot for 400 cars.
In addition to the food court, side streets and alleys are lined with storefronts and roadside stands. Cinemas, video arcades, and karaoke bars are also prevalent in the area. Like most night markets in Taiwan, the local businesses and vendors begin opening around 16:00. As students begin returning home from school, crowds reach their peak between 20:00 and 23:00. Businesses continue operating well past midnight, closing around 01:00 or 02:00.
Tourist traffic has increased in recent years due to the opening of the Taipei Metro system. The night market is closest to Jiantan Station on Tamsui–Xinyi line (Tamsui/Red Line), and can be seen from the station platform.

Walking the Jiantanshan Trail (Taipei, Taiwan)
The Jiantanshan Trail / 劍潭山親山步道 covers Jiantan Mountain / 劍潭山 which is 153 meters above sea level and is located inside the Yuanshan Scenic Area in Shilin District of Taipei City. It is situated behind the Grand Hotel / Shilin Night Markets and is also the hill nearest to the City center. The trail along the ridge will also lead to the other mountains. It is an easy and relaxing trail for hikers to take in the panoramic views of the city, and it is accessible via a variety of public transportation means.
The entrance to the Jiantan Mountain Trail is located at Sec. 4 of Zhongshan N. Rd. near MRT Jiantan Station. This was once a military control zone and also a conservation area; thus, its natural habitat and ecology are well preserved.
This trail has become a popular venue for nearby residents doing their morning exercises. The “Old Place” for instance, is one of those famous “exercise spots”. Along the trail, one can see the Grand Hotel and Keelung Riverside Park. At the end of this easy-to-traverse trail you’ll come out at Lane 165 of Tongbei Rd., near Beian Rd. intersection.
1. Trail length: Hiking trail: approx. 2.74km, total: approx 3.3km
2. Altitude: 198m
3. Walking time: approx. 1 hr 24 min

Hiking in Yangmingshan National Park in Taipei
Parts 20-23: Went hiking in Yangmingshan National Park (陽明山國家公園) in Taipei with my friend Yuanyuan. To get there, we met at the Jiantan MRT station (which is also where the Shilin Night Market is) and waited over an hour to get on the 小15 bus. It was about 8:30am on a Sunday. We thought we came early but there were already a lot of people lined up. The park wasn't crowded at all though, as you can see in the video. It was a nice, leisurely hike, with cicadas providing surround sound background music.

Yangmingshan National Park - Where To Go Hiking in Taipei
One of the best day trips from Taipei (or even a fun afternoon activity) is to go hiking in Yangmingshan National Park, one of 7 national parks in Taiwan. An addition to my Taipei Travel Guide series - this is also video number 5 in my 30-day video challenge.
If you're wondering how to get to Yangmingshan National Park, I give the full details on buses in my itinerary post:
Directions: Take Taipei metro to Jiantan Station and then catch the bus outside on the main road. Buses R5 or R15 both go to the park, leaving about every 15 or 20 minutes.
