No cameras allowed: A rare look inside Jiaoxi, Tangwei Hot Springs, in Yilan Taiwan.
I was heading from Yilan to Wai Ao Beach in Taiwan. On the way, I asked the locals on the train about any hot springs... They said there is a hot springs town, and to just get off at Jiaoxi station... So this is my adventure on a spur of the moment stop in Taiwan, about an hour from Taipei.

Lots of fresh seafood
We love seafood and this is the place to visit for fresh off the boat seafood. One can purchase the fresh seafood and then have the food cooked at the small stalls with dining area at the back of the port. This is the best way to enjoy fresh seafood. they also carry sashimi grade tuna, and some unique fish and fish fat. The grilled salmon was just absolutely delicious.

Meeting the World Vlog: Taipei hot spring experience
In the Yilang district of Taiwan, just outside of Taipei, is Jiaosi, a village where healing hot springs abound. The water is famous for its healing properties.
Evergreen Resort Hotel Jiaosi (Jiaoxi), Ilan (Yilan), Taiwan
October is the perfect month to visit the hot springs of Jiaosi (Jiaoxi) in Ilan County, Taiwan! There are some beautiful hikes, waterfalls, Tamkang University, a golf course just minutes away and a bustling downtown night market atmosphere on the weekends. You can even have little fish nibble at your feet in a free hot springs park. Yeah, that's really a thing!
Despite being a comparatively older hotel in Jiaosi, Evergreen has kept up with the times and modernized their rooms. There was no mold detected or those musty smells you have due to a humid climate in Taiwan. On our first night, we suffered from noisy neighbors. However, on the second and third nights, we were on an end unit, which was much quieter (and with a better view).
We loved the nightly entertainment in the lobby which started at 9:15pm where they set up a stage and seating area. On our first night there was a hula hoop acrobat who then became the assistant for a magician using super large playing cards. The second night featured a man who balanced on a can rolling beneath a board. (He only fell, once and recovered nicely...My hands were sweating, as I was nervous just watching him!).
The service in the Evergreen Hotel is excellent, as you may have come to expect if you've even flown on their airline. There are several restaurants to choose from. I would mention that on the weekends, you may be diverted to the downstairs for the buffet breakfast, which is not as fully-stocked as the second floor. To me, the American breakfast from room service was acceptable. I was expecting the person who took my order to ask which type of meat I wanted, but it comes with all three (ham, bacon, and sausage)! My wife did not care so much for the Chinese porridge. The rooms are stocked with fresh fruit and all the non-alcoholic beverages in the fridge are included in the room price.
There are outdoor pools, which we didn't use because it was a bit cool, but that didn't stop quite a few swimmers from using them. We spent quite some time in their game rooms on the third floor! There is a ping-pong table, pool table, fussball, several air hokey tables, and a room devoted to video game consoles. I also used the gym, which is not too large, but adequate. On the rooftop, there is a small observation deck and one of those get naked Japanese spas for separate genders. At the time we were there (Oct., 2019), the female spa was under renovation, so the use of the male spa had to be split into times, alternating between male and female bath times.
The only differences between the Superior and the European room, besides the floor plan, was that the European room included the extra office/living area with a capsule coffee maker and a much larger Japanese-style tub. It also featured Hermes toiletries. Even with discounts the room costs are still fairly steep, so try to stay on weekdays! Jiaoxi has quite a few less expensive options for hotels and Air B&B.

宜蘭礁溪五峰旗瀑布 Wufengqi Waterfall and Catholic Sanctuary, Jiaoxi, Yilan, Taiwan
On our last day in Jiaoxi, we decided upon Wufengqi Waterfall as a half-day excursion before heading back south. I added the Catholic Sanctuary of Our Lady Church along the same mountain route while my wife rested.
Wufengqi was a more difficult hike than the Linmei Trail (see the video), with more stairs. But don't worry; If you get tired, there are a lot of break areas with benches to catch your breath and some smaller waterfalls to admire. We saw many elderly folks doing fine, making their way steadily upward to the third tier.
There were actually quite a few visitors, (but not overwhelming) so it is good that we came on a Monday. Parking was easy and, as usual, there were vendors at the entrance. The pathway with the stairs is well-maintained and there are railings for safety. After a few switchbacks, you reach a series of platform viewing areas. You cannot get close to the largest (top tier) waterfall, as it is blocked off. My wife and I considered it worth our effort!
When coming back down, if you still have the energy, check out the Catholic Sanctuary instead of returning directly to the parking area. It will take you about ten minutes to walk up the steep windy road from where the pathway splits. The sign is in Chinese and English.

四棱溫泉,宜蘭縣 Sileng hot spring, Taoyuan/Yilan county
Just across the border into Taoyuan county on the north cross-island highway is one of the most beautiful and remote wild hot springs in the country. Over an hour's steep climb, some of it using ropes and tree roots, brings you down to this hot spring waterfall leading into a clear blue pool next to a river perfect for swimming.
