Gansu Province is located in the northwestern China. To the west of Lanzhou and west of the Yellow River is the famous Hexi Corridor, an important strategic passage on the ancient Silk Road stretching to the west. This area abounds in rich historical and cultural heritage, including grottoes, ancient buildings and other cultural relics.
Through these lands, and in the Gobi Desert, you can admire some natural landscapes characterized by a tormented geological history.

China's Tusi Relic Sites Add to World Heritage List
China's Tusi sites, relics of tribal domains in southwest China was inscribed in the World Heritage List on Saturday at the ongoing World Heritage Conference in Germany.
Tusi was the the name of hereditary rulers of some ethnic people inhabited mountainous areas and the title was granted by ancient China's central government.
Tusi sites have now become the 48th Chinese entries to the World Heritage List, after China applied Silk Road and Grand Canal successfully to be listed on World Heritage List.
The Tusi relic sites are jointly applied by central China's Hunan and Hubei provinces and southwest China's Guizhou Province.
The Tusi relic sites consist of three historical sites, the Yongshun old Tusi town in central China's Hunan Province, Tangya Tusi town in central China's Hubei Province, and the relic sites of Hailongtun castle in southwest China's Guizhou Province.
The Yongshun old Tusi town has a history dating back more than 600 years. Lying on the bank of a river, it is the largest, oldest and best preserved Tusi town site in China, with a temple, ancestral house, cemeteries and memorial archway. The complicated sewer ditch network is still working.
The Tangya Tusi town in Xianfeng County, Hubei Province, was even bigger than the Forbidden City in Beijing. The chieftains there ruled for 460 years. Statues, a cemetery and an ornately decorated memorial archway still stand there.
The relic sites of Hailongtun castle in Zunyi, Guizhou Province, are located at the top of a mountain. The fortress was built in 1257 A.D. and was burned down in a battle in 1600 A.D.. The site covers 1.59 square kilometers, and more than 2,000 pieces of cultural relics were unearthed in 2012, including porcelain, jade and ink slabs.

Gansu - Truly Ancient Silk Road
For centuries Gansu was a vital corridor between China and Central Asia. The north-western province provided a 1,600 km section of the Silk Road. Numerous ancient monuments are dotted along the famous historical route - from temples, monasteries and pagodas to towers and ancient palaces.
With so many cultural relics, it's maybe not that surprising to hear that the ancient silk road culture is still thriving there.
China's Tusi sites listed as world heritage
China's Tusi sites, remains of tribal domains in southwest China whose hereditary rulers were appointed by ancient China's central government as Tusi, was inscribed in the World Heritage List on Saturday.

Matisi The Hanging Temple
In 2012 near the end of my Silk route journey, I crossed the border from Kyrgyzstan to China. Once deep in the heart of the Chinese state of Gansu , on the outskirts of Zhangye are the Amazing Matisi Cave Temples. Carved out of solid rock face a group of 7 grottos hold holy relics and wonderful wall paintings and beautiful sculptures of the Buddha.
Surrounding the Mati Temple are beautiful hills, peculiar caves, unusual peaks and green waters. Tourists can get the chance to interact with the people of Yhugur Minority tribe, try the authentic stewed lamb and learn more about their cultural characteristics and their unique lifestyle as true nomads.

SUMMARY
=======
Gansu (甘肃; formerly romanized as Kansu) is a landlocked province of the People's Republic of China, located in the northwest of the country. Its capital and largest city is Lanzhou, located in the southeast part of the province.
The seventh-largest administrative district by area at 453,700 square kilometres (175,200 sq mi), Gansu lies between the Tibetan and Loess plateaus and borders Mongolia (Govi-Altai Province), Inner Mongolia and Ningxia to the north, Xinjiang and Qinghai to the west, Sichuan to the south and Shaanxi to the east. The Yellow River passes through the southern part of the province. Part of Gansu's territory is located in the Gobi desert. The Qilian mountains are located in the south of the Province.
Gansu has a population of 26 million, ranking 22nd in China. Its population is mostly Han, along with Hui, Dongxiang and Tibetan minorities. The most common language is Mandarin. Gansu is among the poorest administrative divisions in China, ranking 31st in GDP per capita. Most of Gansu's economy is based on the mining industry and the extraction of minerals, especially rare earth elements. Tourism also plays a role in Gansu's economy.
The State of Qin originated in what is now southeastern Gansu and went on to form the first dynasty of Imperial China. The Northern Silk Road ran through the Hexi Corridor, which passes through Gansu, resulting in it being an important strategic outpost and communications link for the Chinese empire.
The city of Jiayuguan, the second most populated city in Gansu, is known for its section of the Great Wall and the Jiayuguan Pass fortress complex.
