Subscribe link :
The Jigokudani Monkey Park offers visitors the unique experience of seeing wild monkeys bathing in a natural hot spring. The park is inhabited by Japanese Macaques, which are also known as Snow Monkeys. It is located in the monkey's natural habitat, in the forests of the Jigokudani valley in Yamanouchi, not far from the onsen towns of Shibu and Yudanaka.
The park has one man-made pool around which the monkeys gather, located a few minutes' walk from the park entrance. Shortly, visitors will likely encounter monkeys along the path to the pool. The monkeys live in large social groups, and it can be quite entertaining to watch them communicating with each other. Accustomed to humans, the monkeys can be observed from very close and almost completely ignore their human guests. Of course, it is prohibited to touch or feed the monkeys.
The park has a small information center that provides information but mostly in Japanese. However, there is a small English explanation on the alpha male system of the monkey troop, as well as portraits of the park's present and former alpha males, dating back dozens of years. There is a live camera beside the monkey pool that is accessible online. Although the park is open all year round, the bathing monkeys are particularly photogenic when the area is covered in snow. There is usually snow in the region from December to March, and the best timing for a visit is January and February. Monkeys bathe around the year, but they sometimes need some encouragement to do so, like throwing food into the pool by park wardens, especially during the warmer seasons of the year.
Jigokudani, in which the park is located, means hell valley and is a common name for Japanese valleys with volcanic activity. Although its landscape is not so striking as some of Japan's other jigokudani valleys, Yamanouchi's Jigokudani does produce a few steaming hot springs. There is a ryokan called Korakukan in the valley, which visitors will pass through along the way to the monkey park.
There are two approaches to the Monkey Park: one requires a 25-40 minute walk through the forest, while the other requires a 10-15 minute walk from the nearest parking lot.
The first approach involves taking a bus to Kanbayashi Onsen from Yudanaka Station (10-15 minutes, 310 yen, 1-2 buses per hour), Shibu Onsen (5-10 minutes, 190 yen, 1-2 buses per hour) or Nagano Station (40 minutes, 1400 yen, 4-10 buses per day). Buses along the Yudanaka-Kanbayashi Line stop at Kanbayashi Onsen bus stop, while other buses stop at Kanbayashi Onsen-guchi bus stop, a short walk away. From Kanbayashi Onsen, a 25-40 minute walking trail leads to the monkey park. The walking trail is passable around the year, but sturdy footwear is recommended especially in winter.
The alternative approach involves a 10-15 minute walk from a paid parking lot just to the west of the monkey park. However the narrow road from Shibu Onsen to the parking lot is not served by public transportation and gets closed in winter. Although rather time consuming, it would be possible to walk to the parking lot from Shibu Onsen in about 45-60 minutes when there is no snow.

Exploring Hell Valley (Jigokudani) | Japan 2016 | Episode 7
After an amazing Japanese breakfast at our resort hotel we ventured out for a morning of hiking to go explore Jigokudani, otherwise known as Hell Valley. It is an unearthly landscape which really does conjure up visions of hell as you walk among the gurgling creaks, bubbling geysers and steaming vents. It was amazing to think about the 9 different hot spring waters being pumped down into Noboribetsu Onsen, the town in which we were staying, many of them coming from Hell Valley.
After getting our fill of hell we continued along one of many hiking trails in the area until we came across Oyunuma Pond, another artifact of the volcanic activity in the area. This pond was black and oily looking and constantly bubbling thanks to the geyser feeding it from underneath.
We followed the trail back down into town and strolled into Sengen Park, surrounded by giant clubs of various colours and hosting a geyser, right there in the middle of town. Right around the corner from the park was The Shrine of King Enma, with it’s giant statue sitting in a chair looking down over you as you walk by along the main shopping street of town.
After a browse around we headed back to the resort hotel for a relaxing soak in some of the hot spring waters we saw originating from Hell Valley. It was a perfect way to sooth away any aches from the morning of hiking.
We capped of the day with another amazing kaiseki meal, taking a different approach with our filming to give you all a new vantage point to see the varied courses which make up such a meal.
Full and content we retired to our futon in our tatami room for our last night of slumber in Noboribetsu Onsen.

LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY in HELL VALLEY | Noboribetsu, Japan
We made it to Noboribetsu, Japan where we explored, found hot springs, and got in some landscape photography.
Find more of my landscape photography on IG at @brendanvanson | Gareth's Onsen video:
We're on Hokkaido Island here in Japan looking for some cool landscape photography locations while travelling around for some other motives which I'll discuss on tomorrow's vlog. We came across a place called Noboribetsu while doing some research on places to shoot photography in Japan. And, it turns out, that this is a great place. Not only are the photo spots great, but it's just a really cool place to hang out and visit. I'm so glad we made the trip up here.
At Noborietsu Onsen, there's a place called Hell Valley which is an awesome place for landscape photography. There are a couple cool compositions, and if the light was better I'm sure it would have been incredible. Not that it wasn't good, just that the photos might not show exactly how incredible Hell Valley and Noborietsu are.
Tomorrow, we're taking the vlog deeper into Hokkaido. It will be fun!
Japanese Snow Monkeys in November at Jigokudani Monkey Park
The Japanese macaque, also known as the snow monkey, is a terrestrial Old World monkey species that is native to Japan. They get their name snow monkey because they live in areas where snow covers the ground for months each year – no other nonhuman primate is more northern-living, nor lives in a colder climate. Individuals have brown-grey fur, red faces, and short tails.
Jigokudani Monkey Park near Nagano is known for its large population of snow monkeys, which descend from the steep surrounding cliffs during the day to sit in and near the warm hot springs.
Filmed and edited by Robert Stephens.
Japan: Days 7-9 - Japanese Alps
We continue our tour through the Japanese Alps:
- walking the Nakasendo, the old central mountain route used by Shoguns in the Edo Period
- visiting the picture perfect town of Tsumago
- seeing Matsumoto castle by night and day
- visiting the gardens of Obuse
- seeing the snow monkeys swimming in the hot springs at Jigokudani
Hiking on ICE !? [2015 JPN TRIP Oyunuma hike]
This episode I hiked through the closed trails in snow to reach the sulphuric pond Oyunuma, not quite off the beaten tracks since its normally accessible via traffic (in warmer seasons I presume) but the energy-draining hike has definitely made it something more meaningful. Other than that, I just looked like a piece of shit as mentioned.

Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route: Massive Snow Wall Walk | Japan Travel EP #4
2 Day Trip to Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine Route and Nearby places is shown in this travel video.
Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is a once a lifetime experience; it is a full day trip from Toyama to Ogizawa. Time your visit well, best when the snow corridor is still standing tall.
The route is 37 kilometres (23 mi), with a vertical interval of as much as 1,975 metres (6,480 ft). There are seven different transportation services using five different modes, namely funicular, bus, trolleybus, aerial tramway, and walking. The route is built so that the surrounding environment is not damaged. Three lines go through tunnels (to protect them from snow), among which are two trolleybus lines, the last in Japan, because they do not exhaust fumes in the tunnels.
The route goes through Tateyama in the Hida Mountains with many scenic sites as well as walking trails, including Japan's largest dam, Kurobe dam. Some stations have hotels around them and are used as bases for mountain climbing or trekking, mainly near Tateyama Station as well as up on the mountain by Murodo Station.
There are many sights along the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. From the highest to the lowest, these sights include the following.
Located by Oyama peak is Oyama Shrine, where climbers can receive a blessing and warm sake from a priest. There is also a rest area where climbers may buy food, drinks, and souvenirs. This peak is better known but it is some way from the highest point of the mountain (Onanjiyama).
Located on Murodo Plateau from Murodō Station is a shopping area and onsen bath. The onsen on Tateyama is famously known for its use of sulfur spring water for the bath, leaving a noticeable aroma that can be detected even while ascending the mountain. Visitors can also find several hiking and walking paths that take them through the beautiful valleys, and take a look at Devil's Valley (Jigokudani). With many volcanic areas in Japan by the same name, visitors are no longer able to walk within the sulfur valley due to gas-related safety concerns.
From April 15 to mid-June, one can enjoy the sparkling snow walls named Yukino-ōtani, which tower anywhere from 15 to 20 meters high (roughly 50 to 65 feet). They flank the road leading to Murodo Station, where visitors can enjoy hot, delicious food after walking between the impressive, but chilly, snow walls. There are many charter services from Taipei, Inchon and Thailand during the high season to reach Murodo at this time.
From Murodo, visitors can also reach Kurobe Dam, which stands at 186 meters (610 feet), making it the tallest dam in Japan. From Murodō Station, visitors should take the Tateyama Tunnel Trolleybus (10 minutes), followed by the Tateyama Ropeway (7 minutes), and finally the Kurobe Cable Car (5 minutes). From the last stop, a 15-minute walk will take visitors to the dam.
Midagahara is a flat walking area filled with flowing plains interrupted by blue ponds. Near the bus stop that returns visitors to Bijodaira back down the mountain is a slightly hidden walking path. Midagahara is accessible from Tateyama Station via the Tateyama Cable Car (7 minutes) followed by Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route bus (about 40 minutes) that goes in the direction of Murodō Station.
On clear days, climbers can see Shōmyō Falls (the tallest waterfall in Japan) across the valley while traveling along the main road from Tateyama Station to the Murodo Plateau. For a closer look, visitors can take a bus from Tateyama Station to the Shōmyō Falls stop (about 20 minutes). From there, visitors can walk to the falls up a steady slope (about 20 minutes). There is a large bridge as well as two viewing platforms to get views of the Falls.
The section between Kurobe Dam and Ōgisawa was originally made for construction of the dam, while the section between Tateyama and Kurobeko was for tourists from the beginning. Currently, the route is purely a sightseeing one, only used by tourists. Although this is the only route that directly links Toyama and Nagano, it is impractical for normal users as it takes 6 transfers, roughly 5 hours.

JAPAN Vlog 24 | Kyoto x Nara 2018 | Key Bobadilla
Comment down below which one was your favorite from this trip ☺️ Mine was walking around Nara Park with all the deer baby Bambam while holding on to dear life as well. ????????
Team Great ????
GOD IS GOOD!!! Blessed to have these two companies ????
????Arashiyama, Bamboo Forest, Kyoto
It was scorching hot so we cycled for a bit and mistakenly rented a bicycle for a day for 900 yen ???????? There were many people specially foreigners who don't abide with Japan's rule to keep left so we struggled cycling ???? Plus, parking was way too far from the Bamboo Forest ????
????Nara Park
We arrived here at around 4 pm and enjoyed baby Bambam's world where you can feed the deers and pet them. They were quite nice but there's a possibility they could attack and kick you too so you better be careful. ???? ☺️ Enjoy!

Japan Tour 3 (Nagano - Jigukudani) Monkey Park
he Jigokudani Yaen-koen (altitude 850 meters) is located in the Valley of Yokoyu River sourced from Shiga-Kogen of the
Joshinetsu-Kogen National Park in northern part of Nagano prefecture.
Because of the very steep cliffs and the steam coming off the springs in everywhere, ancient people called this valley ‘Jigokudani (Hell valley)’ .
Also it is buried in snow almost one third of the year. Even that kind of severe environment here is a paradise on earth for monkeys to live in.
The troops of wild Japanese macaque (they are popularly known as snow monkeys) inhabit here naturally through the ages.
Since the establishment of Jigokudani Yaen-koen in 1964, it has been a worldwide popular place for watching the bathing
monkeys in a hot spring and for ecological observation of researchers or photographers,
and some of them who visited here have accomplished certain results in the area.

Noboribetsu Hokkaido ★Japan Vlog 22★
In the morning we went out for a nice walk in the Frosty Noboribetsu. The fall colours where really nice creating some really nice displays. We found a really neat Geyser at Sengen Park and explored Jigokudani (Hell Valley). Then we went to the top of a volcano and found a Bear Park with a great view of Lake Kuttara. After checking out of our room we saw a ghost playing a piano and got some warm soup out of a vending machine. On the way back to Osaka our plane had really bad leg room and I started to experience vacation burnout.
