It is a cooking method using high temperature steam heat spouted from hot spring, and has been used in Beppu since the Edo period. Put the food on the side, put it in a cauldron where about 100 degrees of steam called Hell steaming pot spouts, and just put a lid.
Because the steam is steamed at once in the hot spring steam that contains salt, the original taste of the food is trapped.
Beppu Tetsuwa Onsen, which uses a hot spring fume of 98% Celsius and 100% geothermal energy, is a facility where you can experience the traditional cooking method “Hell steamed dishes” used from the Edo period.
In addition, the hot spring cooling system monument Yureidaki and Drinking center, and the adjacent pocket park foot steaming and footbath which can be used by wheelchair users are also available.

The most amazing Hot Spring Onsen experience in BEPPU because you wear a cotton yukata and lay down on a bed of herbs Acorusgramineus that smells fantastic and it is extremely hot 70 Celsius inside on top of Japanese rush leaves. Eight to 10 minutes here is said to have the detoxifying power of up to 30 minutes in a sauna! VERY IMPORTANT, if you sleep over night at a Ryokan in Kannawa you can buy a discounted ticket ¥310 from them instead of ¥510 for the entrance fee and can use your Ryokan's Yukata.
You cannot go into the steam sauna naked. You either have to bring your own clothes or rent a yukata, which costs 210 yen. First, you quickly wash your body in the onsen. Then you enter the sauna room through a tiny door. The room is heated by thermal steam and the floor is covered with herbs. The sauna is enjoyed lying down on the herbs. You stay for eight minutes or — if you are tough — ten minutes. Afterwards you can use the onsen to wash off sweat and relax some more. First time I did it I felt like I could stay inside 20 minutes ???? but on the 2nd day at the 8 minutes mark my lower part of legs was burning however I managed to stay the full 10 minutes. Afterwards the cute grandma who is controlling and coordinating everything said I should wear long pants or socks! So you will only feel burning feeling to the body parts getting out of the Yukata ????. But it was a super cool experience, way better than Sand Spa or Mud Spa!! Because, if you think of the sand one, they reuse same sand from person to person all are covered in same sand and sweat in it. But here you have a clean Yukata every time and the herbs are also replaced a couple of times during the day.

But you canan have there a simple breakfast made of steamed eggs and steamed sweet potato with coffee. Also you can't use their bath, instead they provide you free or discounted entrance to all dozens of amazing and historical public spas surrounding their Ryokan!! The LOCATION is AWESOME as they are just near the most amazing ♨️ STEAM ONSEN where you lay down on a bed of herbs and plants in a dark cave-like steam room and for 8-10 minutes relax in air as hot as 70 Celsius and sweat out all toxins! I went there every day and want it at home, such an amazing experience it was! So it is really lovely to TOJI STAY at low prices and do the bathing all over Kannawa for free! And Miho the lady owner of TOJI STAY was so cute and kind and helpful and warm-hearted, doing everything possible to make my stay a happy stay! And then there's manager Kenny who comes from Canada who will do the same for anyone needing English support and even do tours with you through the town if needed! And of course ????RUSH, their very calm doggie that can sometimes be seen in the backyard but he will not eat ????apple if you offer him any????.
HIROMIYA started in 1960 as a family business welcoming guests to its place of healing in Kannawa, Beppu. The Japanese word toji (湯治) means hot spring cure. Guests from all over Japan would stay at Hiromiya Toji Stay for days, weeks, or even months to heal their mind body by soaking themselves in mineral rich hot springs.
In April, 2019 Hiromiya Toji Stay reopened as a place for visitors and locals to connect. You should think of Hiromiya as a tourist information center meets local community center.

Beppu Onsen Jigoku is located in Beppu City Oita Ken Japan. This is one of the most exciting tourist destination in Oita. But beware, this onsen is not for bathing because the temperature is 100 degrees.
There are 8 hells “ jigoku” in total that are scattered in the area.
