Jiji Small Railway Line Tour (Taiwan)
The Jiji Line / Jiji Small Railway Line / 集集線 is a branch line of the Taiwan Railway Administration, located in Changhua and Nantou Counties in Taiwan with a length of 29.7 km. The line was originally built by Taipower to facilitate the construction of Mingtan Pumped Storage Hydro Power Plant in Sun Moon Lake. Afterwards, the colony government purchased the route in 1927. The line was severely damaged in the 1999 Jiji earthquake on 21 September 1999, but was repaired and resumed operations in February 2002.
On Jiji Line, there are twelve runs everyday, however, only one runs between Ershui Station and Checheng Station, and the others travel between Taichung Station and Checheng Station. The headway between each number of runs is about two hours. Due to the line being single tracked, only one train can travel the full length at a time. Historically, only the TRA's diesel-powered trains could operate on the line due to the width of the line's tunnels. Following the renovations from 2010 to 2011, the Jiji Line became navigable to other types of trains.
A one-way ticket fare, from Ershui to Checheng, is NT$44 by mileage for adults. And, an unlimited-rides pass fare is NT$80, for used in one day. The Jiji Line ticket and one-day round-trip pass is available for purchase at all the following stations: Zhunan, Miaoli, Fongyuan, Taichung, Changhua, Yuanlin, Tianzhong, Ershuei, Dajia, Shalu, Douliu, Dounan, and Chiayi.

The first stop of our recent trip to Nantou County was Jiji, where we checked out the railway station and surrounding area, had lunch at a beef noodle restaurant, did a short 4-man-bicycle ride, and finally took photos at the Green Tunnel where we also saw the train on the Jiji Branch Line passing by.

南投縣集集鎮綠色隧道位於名間鄉與集集鎮之間，長達4.5公里的樟樹自然景觀，遠近知名。這些種植於1940 年的樟樹，枝葉茂密，夾道成蔭，蔚為奇觀，路旁是觀光鐵道，火車緩緩經過，更添詩意盎然，是許多新婚佳人、攝影留念、自行車協力車騎車漫遊的好景點。
驅逐砲車為美製M18「地獄貓」型係美國通用公司研製之扭力桿避震系統履帶車，活躍於第二次世界大戰諸戰役中，為我政府遷台接收之第一種美援裝甲設備。M18地獄貓式驅逐戰車（M18 Hellcat）為美軍在第二次世界大戰時開發的一款驅逐戰車。它是美軍在二戰時所有履帶裝甲戰鬥車輛中行走速度最快的一款戰車，故有「地獄貓」（Hellcat）的稱號。

綠色隧道之緣起乃日據時期昭和六年(一九三一年)日本政府闢建由今名間通往本鎮之公路後，至昭和十六年(一九四一年)日政府為紀念日本元二千六百年，乃發動地方民眾義務勞動，分別於濁水往集集隘寮段、濁水往二水炭及名間往南投新街段，共三處種植樟樹行道樹。當時動員村民每戶負責栽植三~四棵作為紀念植樹，並照顧其成長，不可枯死，若枯死必須補植。其中自名間往南投新街段，於民國七十三年(一九四一年)因臺三線公路拓寬工程之需要下，被砍除五0六棵.如今只剩下濁水通往本鎮隘寮段及濁水往二水炭段仍存，如今這些老樟樹樹齡已六十餘年，綠蔭蔽天，形成一綠意盎然猶如隧道之景觀，因此被稱為「綠色隧道」。

Michael from Chang Gung University in Linkou, Taiwan. Today we're in beautiful Jiji, a small town top ten destination in Nantou, Taiwan.
A place where Chinese and indigenous Taiwanese people conducted trade with each other in the 18th century, Jiji became a booming town after railroads and a train station was constructed during the Japanese occupation. These days it's a quiet little area great for a cycling tour.

From the train station to the edge of the green tunnel, it's about a 7km ride and there are several attractions along the way. This is a military history park with real (but retired) tanks and fighter jets from the US. And this is a traditional Chinese wood-fired snake kiln built more than half a century ago, and it's still in operation.
And if you like bananas, you'll love what the locals call mountain bananas here.
Mountain bananas are sweeter. Because they're grown in the mountains and there's less water in the soil here, they grow slower.
Of course you can eat it raw, but there's nothing special about that, so it's also eaten cooked here.

Jiji's wonderful. Great energy, yet really relaxed. Nantou - the mountains are beautiful, the people are really friendly. And the fruit - excellent. The bananas we had yesterday were very special. And if you look here, how often can you find such a long, beautiful green tunnel in Taiwan? The government's obviously done a great job in taking care of this. I've been up here several times by myself on my bike just because I like it so much coming through this area.

National FongHuangGu Bird Park occupies an area of over 30 hectares, and breeds about 300 species of birds, including local Taiwan species and exotic foreign species. An estimated several thousand birds reside at the park. Birds of different habitual behavior, from different ecological environments, can all be found here. They include mountain birds, river birds, sea birds, and migratory birds. Some of these bird species prefer the land, and others, for example, stork and crane varieties, prefer water.

Zhushan Zinangong & Jiji weir (紫南宮 & 集集攔河堰), Nantou,Taiwan, 7/3/2013
Zinangong (紫南宮) is a famous temple for lending money to its believers for up to NT$600. After one year, believers are supposed to come back to return the borrowed money (believers often return with interest as extra thanks to the Land god). The max. NT$600 may be saved or used to purchase something relating to your trade as either of these two actions are supposed to help facilitate the lucky flow of wealth around you.
Everyone wants to touch the Golden Chicken which is outside of temple. You may as well go to Taiwan's one and only 7-stars bathroom architecturally designed to resemble Bamboo shoots.
Jiji weir has become the water resources management center of Zhuoshui River. Its purpose is stabilizing irrigational water resources, allocating water resources effectively and providing industrial water for Yunlin Off-Shore basic industrial district.

ManYueYuan (滿月圓 - Full Moon Park) Trip

Lugu XiaoBanTian (小半天), Nantou, Taiwan, 12/20/2010
Lugu is a beautiful township located in the southwest of Nantou County. Due to its diverse landforms and mild climate, Lugu has a relatively rich natural and tourism resources. Surrounded by breathtaking scenery and mountainous landscape, Lugu practically becomes one of the well-received tourist destinations. The township is also close to a considerable number of famous scenic spots, including Sitou Forest Amusement Park, Siaobantian, National Fonghuanggu Bird Park, NTU Tea Garden, Kilin Lake and more.
In addition to these unique elements, the Lugu Township Office has cultivated a large number of cherry tree varieties in recent years. During the flowering season of cherry trees, the entire hilltop is covered with pinkish-red cherry blossom and the air is filled with the nose-pleasing fragrance.
If travelers would like to appreciate the delicacy of cherry blossom, there are several ideal locations for viewing flower, such as Siaobantian Stone Horse Park, NTU Tea Garden, Siaobantian Community, Heya Village, etc.
In the meantime, Lugu is also famous for its diversity of agricultural products, including tea, coffee beans, bamboo shoots, tea plum, mountain celery, Zuoshui rice and so on. Among that, Dongdong Oolong Tea and winter bamboo shoots are two most characteristic locally sourced agricultural products.
Sicao Green Tunnel (四草綠色隧道), Tainan, 09/20/2012
Billed as a green tunnel on the water, the creek is shaded on both sides by mangrove trees growing in the wetland. A short raft ride on the water channel through the wetland is now a major tourist draw at Taijiang National Park. The park has a total area of 39,310 hectares. Land area includes public lands from Yanshui River to the Zengwen River of Tainan City, Tainan Black-faced spoonbill Reserve and Cigu Lagoon, covering 4095 hectares. The main focuses of the plan are to protect wetlands biodiversity, history of settlement and the characteristic salt and fishing industries. The sea area portion of the park encompasses the coastal water of 20-meter isobaths and the sea region of 20-meter isobaths from Yanshui Estuary to the south end of Tungchi Island in Penghu archipelago, which is 54-kilometers long and 5 kilometers wide. It was the main water route for early Han Chinese settlers crossing from Tungchi Island to Luerhmen. The sea thus encompasses 34,405 hectares.
