Travel in Taiwan (Jan./Feb., 2017):
Jiufen
A trip to the mountain village of Jiufen and its “little sister,” Jinguashi, sits atop the list of things to do for many tourists visiting Taiwan. Both settlements are located in the scenic coastal mountains overlooking the northeast coast, both were once thriving mining centers (copper and gold), and both are worth spending a good amount of time exploring. Below are five places and things to experience/check out/enjoy while there.
Jiufen Old Street
After arriving at Jiufen, most tourists head straight to the Old Street, a narrow and winding pedestrian-only alley lined with souvenir shops and eateries on both sides. Apart from trying some yummy hot or cold (depending on time of year) tapioca and sweet-potato ball soup (Jiufen’s best-known specialty), have a cup of tea at Jiufen A Mei Teahouse, in a beautiful and well-preserved wooden structure with great views, and visit the close-by Shengping Theater, Taiwan’s first cinema, built in 1914 to entertain miners during the heyday of mining in Jiufen.
Jiufen Evening Scenery
Back in Jiufen, make sure to stick around until the evening when the weather is fine. The mountainside-hugging town faces the northwest, meaning that the sun will set to the left when looking out over the coast. The sunset can be quite remarkable and dramatic, especially when there is a scattering of clouds in the sky, a common occurrence on the northeast coast.
Getting there:
Bus from Taipei: There is frequent bus service (No. 1062) from near MRT Zhongxiao Fuxing Station (Exit 1) in downtown Taipei to Jiufen and Jinguashi. The ride takes about an hour.
Railway plus bus: Alternatively, take an eastbound train (heading to Yilan/Hualien) to Ruifang and transfer to a bus bound for Jiufen/Jinguashi or further on to Fulong (passing the Golden Waterfall).

Climbing MT KEELUNG - Golden Fulong Route! (WeWillNomad)
The Mt Keelung Hiking Trail is It's actually not that challenging, just a somewhat strenuous climb up non-stop stone stairs and steps. There are plenty of shaded spots to take a break and we made it to the top viewing spot in around 30 minutes. Depending on the time of day and temperature you should allow at least an hour. When it's wet the trail can be slippery and the top of the mountain may be shrouded in the fog of the clouds. On a clear day, you might even see Taipei 101 in the distance!
The start of the trail is 5 minutes walk from the Jiufen Old Street area and if you're staying in Ruifang you can catch a local bus for NT$15 (every 15 minutes).
As we came down the mountain we took the Aqueduct Bridge Trail which came out close to the Golden Waterfall. You can also use the Golden Fulong Route Shuttle from Jiufen at NT$15 per trip or buy a day pass for NT$50.
The Golden Route got its name from the region around Jiufen once being famous for its gold mines, it's yellow-brown Golden Waterfalls, as well as the yellow-brownish eroded coastal rocks and finally for the golden sand beach in Fulong.

TAIWAN MIGHTY STEGOSAURUS's RIDGE
The Stegosaurus Hike is a difficult 7 hours hike from Stegosaurus Mountain 劍龍稜 to Teapot Mountain 茶壺山. The hike is 90% steep ridges under hard bitting sun. Better get prepared and bring a lot of water. I do not recommend this hike for people without training. Want more info? Click on Plus.
To get there you can take the Train from Taipei to Ruifang and then bus 856 水湳洞 Shuinandong Station.

The Long Journey to Jiufen
It took me longer than necessary to reach this beautiful place due to some mishaps but I'm proud to say that I made it! Here's a short clip of my short time in the place that was the inspiration for the setting of the movie, Spirited Away.

WATCH this before visiting Jiufen Old Street, TAIWAN (WeWillNomad)
Epitomised by its golden lanterns lighting up the narrow alleyways, Jiufen is as charming as anywhere in Taiwan. Or not.
Sadly your experience might heavily depend on where else you have been in Taiwan or what your expectations are/were. Nowadays the 'Old Street' is heavily promoted as a prime tourist destination and a must-see and do on all tours and day trips from the greater Taipei area. Sadly the crowds and general tacky feel of the place was incredibly off-putting and as an experience somewhat disappointing.
That said, the countryside is incredible and if you have the time to explore you should rather hike up Mt Keelung (Jilong) and surrounds. We spent a day covering about 15km and found very few people on the trails.

Part 2: How To Get To Jiufen From Taipei
Jiufen is home to one of the most iconic landmarks of Taiwan. The Famous Teahouses including century-old A-Mei Tea House, who inspired the Japanese anime #SpiritedAway, which won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature at the 75th Academy Awards in 2003. Yeah, we were simply 'spirited away' by the beauty of this charming mountain town! #VisaFreeTaiwan #九份 #HeartofAsia
Things To Do In Taipei - Jiufen
HELLO TO THE BEST HUNTERS
We were told that Jiufen Old Streets were a must go in Taipei. So we took a day and made our way to Jiufen. It was definitely worth it because we could see the place that inspired Hayao Miyazaki to produce Spirited Away. The day was well spent exploring around the Jiufen area. Due to lack of research before hand and time was an issue, we did not get to go to Shifen were there are more old streets, a waterfall and places to set off lanterns. However we did have a good time there and eventually made our way to Shilin Night Markets.

Life in the Wonder City of Gold Jiufen
Just a few decades ago, Jiufen in northern Taiwan was a magnificent city rich in gold ore and bathed in glory. Jiufen's history is wrought with stories of gold-mining anecdotes; with gold strikes and a resulting gold rush that hastened the village's development into a town. Yet its luster began to fade with the decline of gold mining activities. During its peak, gold miners were liberal with their easily gained money, and the town was the symbol of luxury and extravagance, replicating the bustle and boom of Shanghai - hence the nickname, 'mini-Shanghai'. But with the depletion of gold in the mid-1960's, the population started to shrink, and the gold-mining business also faded into history. As a result, many wandering artists looking for creative ideas came to Jiufen to explore new artistic possibilities. They frequented the retro-Chinese style teahouses to enjoy a cup of warm tea and reflect upon the old days, and Jiufen, a long-forgotten mountain town, began to move forward in the river of time. After 1991, the town came alive, and it turned over a new leaf. Jiufen was the backdrop for Hou Hsiao-hsien film A City of Sadness, and since then the city has charmed many tourists into visiting the place. The film was quite a hit, and a lot of people wanted to come here to experience that nostalgic feeling. Consequently many foreign visitors, even locals in Taiwan, came here to visit. Unfortunately there were not many lodging services in Jiufen in the beginning. In response, scores of senior citizens decided to open up their homes to these young visitors. Various homeowners cleared up one of the rooms in the house to accommodate visitors. And now, a lot of the B&B's in Jiufen have begun to incorporate Jiufen's personality, carrying out careful renovations so that visitors can take in the mountain and ocean views from the city. Visitors are understandably fascinated with the natural scenery, and are happy to share these nuggets of beauty with people overseas, so that even more foreign tourists are attracted here to enjoy Taiwan.
