Jim Thompson's House in Bangkok
Jim Thompson was an American businessman who helped revitalize the Thai silk industry in the 1950s and 1960s. A former U.S. military intelligence officer, Thompson mysteriously disappeared from Malaysia's Cameron Highlands while going for a walk on Easter Sunday, March 26, 1967. Many hypotheses have been advanced to explain his disappearance. Theories range from his committing suicide to his being carried away by aborigines.
The Jim Thompson House is a museum in Bangkok. It is a complex of various old Thai structures that Jim Thompson collected in from all parts of Thailand in the 1950s and 60s. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Thailand.
As Thompson was building his silk company, he also became a major collector of Southeast Asian art, which at the time was not well known internationally. He built a large collection of Buddhist and secular art not only from Thailand but from Burma, Cambodia and Laos, frequently travelling to those countries on buying trips.
In 1958 he began what was to be the pinnacle of his architectural achievement, a new home to showcase his art collection. Formed from parts of six antique Thai houses, his home sits on a canal across from Bangkrua, where his weavers were then located. During the construction stage, he added his own touches to the buildings by positioning, for instance, a central staircase indoors rather than having it outside. Most of the 19th century houses were dismantled and moved from Ayutthaya, but the largest - a weaver's house (now the living room) - came from Bangkuar.
It took Thompson almost a year to complete his mansion. Now a museum, the Jim Thompson House could be reached by public or private transport. Except for Sundays, it is open to the public from 9am to 4.30pm.

The Jim Thomson House - Bangkok (Thailand) [4K/UHD]
The Jim Thompson House is a museum in central Bangkok, Thailand, housing the art collection of American businessman and architect Jim Thompson, the museum designer and former owner. Built in 1959, the museum spans one rectangular rai of land (approximately half an acre or 2023.43 meters).[1] It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Thailand; sporting vibrant jungle foliage in the heart of the city.
Following his moving to Bangkok and the establishment of the Thai Silk Company Limited in 1948, Thompson also became a major collector of Southeast Asian art, which at the time, was not well-known internationally. Attracted by the subtlety of their craftsmanship and expression, he built a large collection of historical Buddhist statues and traditional Thai paintings made of wood, cloth, and paper that depicted the life of Buddha and the legend of Vessantara Jataka. He collected secular art not only from Thailand but from Burma, Cambodia, and Laos, frequently travelling to those countries on buying trips. His collection also consisted of white and blue porcelain from China, which made its way into Thailand around the 16th and 17th centuries.[2]
In 1958, he began what was to be the pinnacle of his architectural achievement, a new home to live in and to showcase his art collection. The museum was planned to consist of a complex combination of six traditional Thai-styled houses, primarily constructed of wood, and various old Thai structures that were collected from all parts of Thailand in the 1950s and 1960s.[3] His home sits on a klong (canal) across from Bangkrua, where his weavers were then located. Most of the 19th-century houses were dismantled and moved from Ayutthaya, but the largest, a weaver's house (now the living room), came from Bangkrua.
After Thompson's disappearance in 1967, the house came under the control of The James H. W. Thompson Foundation under the royal patronage of H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. At 6 Soi Kasemsan 2, Rama 1 Road, Pathumwan, only a block away from Bangkok National Stadium, it is open everyday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Guided tours are available daily.

Welcome to the beautiful Jim Thompson House Museum. It is the former home of the famous American Jim Thompson, who started the Thai silk industry after World War II. It houses a magnificent collection of Asian art and many unique displays. This historical destination is not to be missed when visiting the bustling city of Bangkok, Thailand.
We arrived late morning and were able to grab a tour of the house within the hour. Beware that no photos or videos are allowed to be taken in the house. Be sure to walk through the garden of the house, which actually feels like a mini jungle with beautiful Thai foliage. The whole area is very quiet and serene, which is surprising, considering it is located in central Bangkok and only a short walk from the Bangkok National Stadium.
After our tour, we ate lunch at the Jim Thompson house. We feasted on two traditional curry food dishes and Thai coconut soup while the kids enjoyed some well-prepared Western dishes. Everything was perfect at the restaurant from the service to the food. We felt it was in the same caliber as a 4 to a 5-star restaurant. Be sure to visit too!

Jim Thompson House and Restaurant BANGKOK (2018)
Jim Thompson was an American Who served in the U.S. Army during World War II. At the end of the war, he was sent to Asia as a military officer and fell in Love with Bangkok. After leaving the service he returned to Bangkok to live there permanently. He was an architect prior to the war and he adhered to the traditional Thai style of construction of the buildings in most respects. The houses were elevated a story above the ground to avoid flooding.
Jim Thompson later opened his home to the public and donated the proceeds to Thai charities and to the preservation of Thai cultural heritage. He disappeared on March 26th, 1967 in Malaysia.
Jim Thompson Restaurant & Bar is located within the house grounds. Their dishes are mainly Thai-Western fusion and a bit pricey.

Discover Bangkok: The Jim Thompson House
A tour of the Jim Thompson House Museum. Jim Thompson was an American architect and spy who moved to Thailand in 1946. He became famous as an exporter of Thai silk and as an art collector. He moved six traditional Thai houses to Bangkok and assembled them into a home for himself. He disappeared while on holiday in Malaysia in 1967. It was one of the more intriguing disappearances of the 20th century. It has been speculated that he was murdered by robbers, killed by a tiger, or disappeared by Malaysian communists because of his connection to the OSS (predecessor of the CIA). However, nobody actually knows, or at least admits to knowing. After his disappearance his nephew created the Jim Thompson foundation, which operates his house as a museum and runs several other Jim Thompson themed attractions in Bangkok.
