Sound of Taiwan__Beishan Beach on Kinmen / 台灣之音__金門北山沙灘
Recorded early in the morning at a beach on Kinmen Island. The beach is close to the loudspeaker wall not far from Beishan where they used to play messages and music directed at people on the other side (mainland China). The still play the message by Teresa Teng and two of her songs. I kept a distance to the loudspeakers and recorded the small waves crashing on the beach and different birds singing their morning songs.

Jhaishan or Zhaishan Tunnel (Slideshow) / 翟山坑道 (Kinmen / 金門縣 / 金门县)
The Jhaishan or Zhaishan Tunnel / 翟山坑道 is a tunnel in Jincheng Township, Kinmen County. Under the agreement of the Ministry of National Defense, the tunnel can be used by the Republic of China Armed Forces during wartime or for military exercise.
The construction of the tunnel started in 1961 and completed on 22 March 1966, few years after the Second Taiwan Strait Crisis in 1958 between the Republic of China Armed Forces and People's Liberation Army. Due to the lack of manpower and money to preserve the tunnel, it was closed and abandoned in 1986. Later on, there was a growing interest in preserving the national heritage and remembering those who fought for Kinmen, thus on 23 May 1997, the Kinmen National Park took over the management of the tunnel. The tunnel was opened to the public in 1998.
The tunnel is 101 meters in length, 6 meters in width and 3.5 meters in height. There are seven rooms inside that serve as barracks. The tunnel features an A-shaped waterway with 357 meters in length, 11.5 meters in width and 8 meters in height. It was used to conceal small naval vessels.

Seniors' nursing home in SE China village
Empty nesters are used to describe senior citizens who are left behind in cities or rural areas with their children seeking wealth elsewhere.
The increasing number of migrant labor forces has made more and more empty nesters in China.
Although private capitals have increased investment into the elder nursing industry, the gap between the investment and demand is still huge.
Taking care of the elders in their own community is a new attempt in this field.
Dapu village of southeast China's Fujian province has registered residents of some 5,000, but nearly 2,000 of them have migrated to cities for work. Most of them are young people.
For the left, most are the elderly, life without the young are really difficult.
To take care of them, local government built a nursing home with a building area of 7,000 square meters.
It's free for more than 200 elderly people aged above 70 years old.
Until now, nearly 190 elderly people have moved in.
SOUNDBITE(CHINESE)WU JIANPING, Vice director of Dapu nursing home
The living facilities include bathroom, hot water system, garderobe, beds and quilts. Each person has three sets of quilts and sheets. It's free for elderly people to live here. Some living necessities, such as washing powder, are also for free. They can move in just with some clothes.
81-year-old Wu Shengleng moved to the nursing home with her wife two years ago.
He is satisfied with the life here.
SOUNDBITE(CHINESE)WU SHENGLENG, Dapu villager
My son is busy with his work and I felt bored at home. After moving into the nursing home, I could chat with others, read newspapers, play cards and watch TV. The living conditions here are better than at home.
Local government officials say the nursing home is a trial project to address the rural area's ageing population problem.
SOUNDBITE(CHINESE)WU JINCHENG, Party secretary of Dapu
China has nearly 1.4 billion people with 900 million living in rural areas. And many elderly people are left behind in rural areas. As a village official, I have to take measures to solve the problem. So we built the nursing home to allow the young people to work hard outside without worries about their parents.
China has seen fast pace of aging population over the past years.
Official data show population aged on over 60 reached 212 million in 2014, accounting for 15.5 percent of the country's total population.

31 killed and nine missing in Chinese tunnel blast
Investigators uncovered details of a truck collision that triggered a deadly tunnel explosion, killing 31 people near Jincheng, China.
The accident took place nearly two weeks ago on March 1 when a methanol tanker rear-ended another parked tanker during traffic jam in a Shanxi province tunnel.
The front truck attempted to pull forward to disengage the two trucks. By that time, methanol leaking from the tank was spreading in the tunnel and catching fire. Drivers of both trucks and their accompanying security guards fled the scene without notifying the police or other drivers.
The fire spread through the 800-metre tunnel, lighting up coal trucks and other vehicles as smoke filled the passageway without ventilation facilities. Xinhua reported that the fire hydrant and emergency escape shaft were malfunctioning.
One natural gas tanker exploded about 100 minutes after the collision, destroying all 42 vehicles in the tunnel. Forty-eight people managed to escape before the explosion took place. In the latest toll, 31 people were killed and nine are still missing.
When the accident happened on March 1, initial reports said that six were missing and 12 were injured. The death toll was updated to 16 on Wednesday.
