EP7: KAIPING Diaolou Watchtowers | UNESCO Heritage | My Village near Hoiping, CHINA | Family Tree
For the first time, my family gets to visit the small village where my sister and I were born and raised. We visit my late Grandma's burial. We see the historical family tree that my Great Grandfather planted many years ago!
Next we explore the Kaiping Diaolou Watch Towers, which are a UNESCO designated World Heritage Site and covers four separate Kaiping village areas: Sanmenli (三门里), Zilicun (自力村), Jinjiangli (锦江里), and Majianglong village cluster (马降龙村落群). Though we only got to visit Majianglong. We check out the Nan Lou tower in Chikan (aka South Tower of the Seven Martyrs), which if you see at the END of the video, there is a large light-brown monument... and those are the Seven Martyrs, which I gravely mistaken to mention.

The Mingshing (Mingshi) Lou Diaolou Tower Villa in Kaiping, China
This first Diaolou in Zili Village open to the public was built by Fang Runwen in 1925 and had six levels. The earliest Daiolou were constructed by villagers during the Ming Period as protection from roaming bandits but those seen today were built during the Qing period (1644-1912) and for several decades after that.
There were heavy bars and metal shutters on all windows, holes on the top level to shoot at invaders and/or throw items down on heads, beautiful antique furniture and exquisite ancestral shrines.
This Diaolou was of particular interest to us because the owner made his fortune in Chicago, my kind of town. Again, the Diaolou are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Story of Oversea's Chinese, Kaiping
The Kaiping Dialou are fortified multistory towers which were constructed in the Kaiping area from the early Qing Dynasty, reaching a peak in the 1920s and 1930s. Kaiping has traditionally been a region of major emigration aboard, and a melting pot of ideas and trends brought back by overseas Chinese made good. It becomes the World Heritage Site in 2007.This narrative clip tells an affecting story of overseas Chinese, and LOVE has solidified Dialou being recognized in all Chinese' hearts.
The Yunhuan Lou Diaolou Tower Villa in Kaiping, China
Another elaborate villa in Zili Village was built by Fang Wenchen in 1921 and had five levels. This man happened to earn his wealth in Malaysia and again, all the antique furniture inside was original and had another exquisite ancestral shrine.
UNESCO World Heritage Site Zili Village consists of three sub-villages constructed between 1821 and 1920 and has nine Diaolou, a group of six western style villas, and single story houses built with blue brick. They were all built around the same time by prosperous emigrants and are similar in concept.
I think the diaolou gave new meaning to the words, gated community...
