Jinju city lights up 70,000 lanterns for Namgang Yudeung Festival

October is known in Korea as a month for festivals.
One of the most popular is a special lantern festival in the southern city of Jinju.
Our Kim Mok-yeon takes us there.
In the late 1500's when Korea was invaded by Japan, lanterns were used as part of a military strategy to prevent Japanese troops from wading across the Namgang river.
The tradition of floating lanterns down the Namgang river continued long after the war to remember the lives of those who fought for the nation.

Today, the custom has developed into a cultural festival that lights up the sky and attracts visitors from far and wide.

The lanterns on display reminded me of my childhood days. I hope students and visitors have fun here and learn a lot at the same time.
This year, more than 70,000 lanterns are being lit up across the city for two weeks under the theme of Traditional customs of Korea

We tried to improve the quality of the lanterns, especially those that represent Korean culture. Also, in order to promote the event globally, we also installed famous world landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower in France.
Visitors can see themselves in the middle of Aesop's fables, alongside popular cartoon characters, and they can even travel back to ancient Korea.
A must-do ritual here at the festival is to write your own wish and hang it in the tunnel of wish lanterns, or float it along the Namgang river.
Organizers say… with more than 3 million people visiting the festival every year, it has now positioned itself as one of the nation's best festivals to visit.
This year's event, the seventeenth of its kind, will run through the end of this week.

South Korea has several lantern festival celebrating each year, but perhaps my favorite and the most famous is the Jinju Lantern festival. Every October, thousands of people from different places and countries visit the city of Jinju in the Southern part of South Korea to witness the Nam River come to life.
I really enjoyed this festival, especially those colorful and beautiful lanterns. The fountain light show and the fireworks display are amazing.

Travel to JINJU 慧秀晉州行 (ENG SUB/中文)
Jinju is located in the South of Korea in Gyeongnam. And along with its river, Jinju is one of the most beautiful and iconic cities in Korea. It has a breathtaking scenic view with many tourist attractions such as Jinjuseong Fortress, Chokseongnu Pavilion, The Jinju National Museum and of course, the Jinyang lake among many others. Today, Hyesoo traveled to the city of Jinju to meet with the Mayor of Jinju and see what the city has to offer…
In 1593 when Japan invaded for the second time we call that ‘Bloody battle in Jinju’ that 70 thousand civilian soldiers were killed, there was a patriotic civil general named Gyeong heo Choi. Nongae was his concubine. After Jinju was surrendered by Japan, Nongae drown herself with Japanese general at Wae Rock below here. The general was dead and that's why she became famous and in some kind of meaning she could be named as the most honorable woman and first woman to offer one’s life in our 5000 years of history. This is the site of that story and that's how this site is meaningful.

Jinju Drone Flight: Jinju is a city in South Gyeongsang Province, South Korea. It was the location of the first (1592) and second (1593) Sieges of Jinju by Japanese forces during the Imjin War. The Republic of Korea Air Force Education and Training Command is located in the eastern part of the city. There are cultural-historical tourist attractions in Jinju such as Jinju Castle, the Jinju National Museum, and the Nam-gang Prehistoric Site Museum. There are cultural events held in Jinju every year. Among these are the Jinju Namgang Lantern Festival which is held in October for approximately ten days. This nationally designated cultural tourism festival, found only in Jinju, features a spectacle of lanterns floating on the Nam River to commemorate the patriotic spirit of the 70,000 militia corps and government troops who died for their country defending Jinju from the Japanese forces during the Imjin War (1592–1598). 70,000 lanterns light up Jinju in Namgang Yudeung Festival

Autumn is great time to enjoy festivals in Korea with nice weather and clear skies.
And the popular Jinju Namgang Lantern Festival is open to visitors for free.
Our Han Soo-ah visited the southern city for a closer look at the festival.
Colorful lanterns float along the Namgang River, each with a unique shape, symbolizing the scenery and landmarks of the world, and the national treasures and cultural heritage of Korea.
The lanterns attract visitors from all around the globe.
“It’s very very nice, very beautiful...we took a lot of photos during the day, and we cannot imagine how it could be...during the night… and now it’s very funny...and it’s very beautiful…for sure.”
“We’re waiting for fireworks...and I think this is the best moment of this festival.”
This lantern festival started from a unique tradition in Jinju city, as the people of Jinju had lit lanterns wishing for the safety of their families during the Japanese invasion in the late 1500s.
Jinju's citizens have continued the tradition of floating lanterns to remember those who had sacrificed their lives for Korea.
Here at the festival, visitors write wishes on lanterns and hang them on the exhibition site or float them along the Namgang River. Visitors can also ride a boat for a closer look at the lanterns.
With more than seventy thousand lanterns lighting up the river at night, the Jinju Namgang Lantern Festival runs until October 14th.

Lantern Festival - South Korea (Jinju 2018)
One of South Korea's largest festivals, the Jinju Namgang Yudeung (Lantern) Festival is an enchanting two week event that takes place each year in October. Held within the walls of the Jinjuseong Fortress and floating atop the Jinju Namgang River, it honors those who battled through the sieges of Korea during the late 1500's.
Each year, hundreds of thousands of people attend the event to enjoy a spectacular display of lanterns, fireworks, performances, enjoy foods from around the world and pay respects to ancestors. There are many other ways that visitors can directly take part in this magical event which are mentioned in the video. I also provide tips and advice on how you can get the most out of your visit!

Korea's top festival for the past 3 years has made its debut in LA Korean Festival on the 26th after it crossed over to take part in Canada's Winterlude Festival. The lantern festival achieved a big feat in promoting Korean culture in America. Today, we take a closer look at the 2013 Jinju Namgang Yudeung Festival.
The floating yudeung of Namgang River have always been the hopes of Jinju. They were the hopes of denfending troops of the Jinju Fortress and villagers during the Imjin War. They were the hopes of people during the times of hunger and hardship. When culture & tourism industry was booming in the beginning of the new millenium, yudeung put Jinju on the map, and since 2013, it has become Jinju's hope in reaching out to the world.
Namgang Yudeung Festival was first introduced with a costume parade during the 6th annual festival in 1955. The festival was actually categorized as a contest, therefore, it began with a name, Yudeung Contest. The contest was held at 7pm in Jinju Middle School.
However from the 8th annual festival, fireworks were newly added to the repertoire. The days were filled with costume parades and the nights were filled with fireworks.
I'm here at the riverside of Namgang River amidst the 2013 Jinju festivity. Images of a dancing woman, a sword wielding warrior, and humorous portrayals of animals. Over 1,600 yudeung are more than enough to drop your jaw in awe.
Korea's top festival for the past 3 years has made its debut in LA Korean Festival on the 26th after it crossed over to take part in Canada's Winterlude Festival.
The Jinju Namgang Yudeung Festival will be included in high school social studies and culture textbooks starting next year as a distinctive local festivity.
Along with other renowned festivities like Boryeong Mud Festival, the Jinju Namgang Yudeung Festival will be introduced in next year's publication of textbooks.
There are talks of expanding the festival to ayudeung expoin order to keep the event as the representative festival of Korea. This year's slogan isWater, Fire, Light and Hope.I hope the people of Jinju and visitors from all walks of life make the best of what is a bright festival to be.

Jinju Namgang Yudeung Festival 2017 originates from the lantern lighting custom used during the Jinjuseong Fortress Battle of the Imjinwaeran War (Japanese invasion, 1592) as a military strategy to prevent Japanese troops from wading the Namgang River. The highlights of the festival are the floating of lanterns carrying personal wishes of the citizens along the Namgang River, and the parade of lanterns created by the students themselves. In addition, the festival features gaejesik (lighting of lanterns in remembrance of the Jinjuseong Fortress Battle veterans), an exhibition of the world’s traditional lanterns, and many more participatory cultural programs.

Tour vs Tour is a real road program that takes viewers to Korea′s most scenic sites.
In Episode 15, we go to Jinju, Gyeongsangnam-do Province and Gimje, Jeollabuk-do Province for a light-themed trip.
First stop
Benji meets his partner Sara at the Gyeongnam Arboretum in Jinju, and Team Benji visits Jinjuseom Fortress, which CNN recommends as a must-visit destination.
Meanwhile, Tina meets her partner Sean at the Geumpyeong Reservoir, and Team Tina stops by the Arirang Literature Village, which brings to life the setting of the novel Arirang.
Second stop
Team Benji attends the Namgang Yudeung Festival and enjoy Korean tradition all around them. At the same time, Team Tina takes part in the Gimje Horizon Festival, where they take part in a traditional swinging game with prize money. How will they do?
Third stop
Both teams end their trips with seafood delicacies! Team Benji enjoys steamed clams and other seafood produces, while Team Tina enjoys baekhap clams. Which side′s meal will look more appetizing?
Following the meals, both teams enjoy the night sights of their respective festivals.
Team Benji and Team Tina have both gone on journeys of light.
