Which Section of the Great Wall of China should you visit? This was probably the biggest question we had before travelling to China. Mutianyu? Badaling? Jinshanling? Or how about off the beaten path at the Great Wall Fresh Homestay? - This film aims to determine once and for all, which is the best section of the Great Wall to visit.

Jinshanling Great Wall
Jinshanling Great Wall lies on the boundary between Luanping County of Hebei Province and Miyun Coutny of Beijing. It is the best preserved part of the Great Wall with many original features. Beijing Travel Guide - Great Wall at Jinshanling
The Great Wall at Jinshanling is about 155 kilometers away from downtown Beijing and stretches from Miyun County of Beijing to Luanping County of Hebei Province. It is the best preserved part of the Great Wall in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) with many original features. Jinshanling connects to the Great Wall at Simatai in the east and Great Wall at Gubeikou in the west. The name of Jinshanling comes from two watchtowers, Great Jinshan Tower and Small Jinshan Tower on the Great Wall in this region. It was said that 3,000 soldiers from Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces, under the command of famous Ming General Qijiguang (1528-1587), built two watchtowers and named them after the Great Jinshan Island and Small Jinshan Island in their hometown to show their sentimental feelings.

Great Wall of China from Jinshanling to Simatai Tour
Jinshanling / 金山岭 / 金山嶺 is a section of the Great Wall of China located in the mountainous area in Luanping County, Hebei Province, 125 km northeast of Beijing. This section of the wall is connected with the Simatai section to the east. Some distance to the west lies the Mutianyu section. Jinshanling section of the wall was built from 1570 CE during the Ming Dynasty.
The Jinshanling section of the Great Wall is 10.5 km long with 5 passes, 67 towers and 3 beacon towers. The initial section of the wall has been restored to original condition, but the condition of the wall deteriorates towards its natural state as it approaches Simatai. The entrance fee is 65 RMB. A cable car (40 RMB) has been constructed to take visitors to the highest point along the wall. There is an additional admission charge of 50 RMB to continue on to the Simatai section, and a 5 RMB fee to cross the suspension bridge.

Simatai Great Wall is 5.4 km long with 35 beacon towers. This section of the Great Wall incorporated the different characteristics of each section of the Great Wall. A specialist on the Great Wall, Professor Luo Zhewen, has said The Great Wall is the best of the Chinese buildings, and Simatai is the best of the Great Wall. UNESCO has designated Simatai Great Wall as one of the World Cultural Heritage Sites as part of the Great Wall World Heritage Site.
Simatai Great Wall is separated by a valley into eastern and western parts. The western part appears gentle with 20 well-preserved watchtowers dotting along the wall. The eastern part is much steeper, following more rugged terrain that includes cliff edges and kilometre-high peaks.
Hanging precariously onto the Yanshan Mountain, Simatai Great Wall is known for its steepness. Open Air Gondolas provide a way to ascend partway up the wall. The 17 watchtowers are relatively closely spaced and provide spectacular views.

One of the most beautiful, less-touristy sections of the Great Wall of China is the Jinshanling Great Wall (Chengde city, Hebei province). 125 km northeast of Beijing, Jinshangling is surrounded by lush mountains in Luanping County.
You can stay at the base, just a quick walk from the Great Wall at the Jinshanling Guesthouse, sometimes called the Jinshanling village and hotel. They have a family-style authentic Jinshanling Chinese lunch served on sight. After eating you can walk to the entrance, where you will see the statue of General Qi jigging. Once you are done walking the wall, you can take a cable car from the top of the Jinshanling section of the Great Wall.

Breathtaking Cloud Spectacle Spotted at Great Wall
A breathtaking cloud spectacle appeared Sunday over a section of the Great Wall in north China's Hebei Province.
The sea of cloud lasts about three hours on Sunday morning as the sky cleared up after a shower.
Tourists and amateur photographers were amazed by the beautiful scene.
The 10.5 km-long Jinshanling Great Wall lies in the province's Luanping County, 130 km to the northeast of Beijing, and is renowned as a major attraction for hiking and photography.

Motorcycle ride in G112 Luanping/Chengde border, Hebei, China
Beijing is known for pollution, congestion and other traffic related issues but once you get out from the city area, it is a different story.
The surrounding mountain area is a less-known motorcycle paradise. These twisty roads offers marvelous scenery and numerous route options for a day ride.

Hiking the Great Wall of China
I was there for Golden Week, October 2012. Golden Week is when most of China has the week off from work to celebrate the founding of the People's Republic. The sections of the Great Wall that are near Beijing are normally mobbed with people that week, but I chose the Jinshanling section, which is 3 hours away by bus, so it was not crowded. I highly recommend that section if you ever visit Beijing during a Chinese national holiday.
