Dr Diana Yeh: Staging China, Sinophilia and the Racial Order
Dr Diana Yeh - Staging China, Chinoiserie and the Racial Order – Thinking Chinese Conference, UCL, 1st April 2015
Dr Diana Yeh (University of Winchester) explores the legacy of 18th Century Chinoiserie in Britain. One popular English adaptation was Shih-I’s Lady Precious Stream (1934) which brought the Peking Opera Wang Baochuan to the British stage. Lady Precious Stream was an overnight success that ran for 1,000 nights in London, making Shih-I the first Chinese Director on Broadway and the West End. In this talk Yeh explores the legacy of the play and ways in which Shih-I’s creative agency was limited, as Western audiences craved a traditional’ portrayal of the orient.
Speaker Biography:
Dr Diana Yeh is a Senior Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Winchester. A former holder of the Sociological Review Fellowship, her research interests lie in race/ethnicity, migration, diaspora and culture. She is author of The Happy Hsiungs: Performing China and the Struggle for Modernity (Hong Kong University Press, 2014) and has presented her research on BBC Radio Four, and at institutions such as the Royal Geographical Society, the Wellcome Trust, National Portrait Gallery and Tate Britain.
About the Conference:
Thinking Chinese 思華 - 華思was a collaborative project between the UCL History Department, China Centre for Health and Humanity and Ming-Ai (London) Institute. This series, including exhibition, conference, participatory arts project and other events, formed the final exhibition and event of the British Chinese Workforce Heritage oral history project (
The conference took place at UCL on 31st March and 1st April 2015 and brought together academics, heritage professionals and community members to explore British Chinese history and exchange of ideas and technologies as well as thinking about Chineseness, from UCL Eugenics, to modern and historical representations of Chinese in the media, in the arts and by those with a Chinese heritage themselves.

本期节目主要内容： 仁里村，坐落于安徽省绩溪县登源河畔，1400多年前，耿源进举家迁徙到此处，因仰慕孔子“仁”的学说，将此地命名为“仁里”。耿源进将“仁爱为本”作为村规祖训教导后人，而后来迁入此地的程氏家族也始终秉持着这条训诫。因家中有八个兄弟，程氏祖宅被称为“八大户”。程松堂是程家的长房，他不仅富甲一方，更因诸多仁义善举被称为徽商典范，当时陷入困境的胡适便是在程松堂的帮助下踏上美国求学之路的。“仁爱”不仅是仁里村传承了千年的村规祖训，也是儒家文化思想的核心，更是几千年中华民族的内在精神。
