Joal-Fadiouth is a town and commune in the Thiès Region at the end of the Petite Côte of Senegal, south-east of Dakar. Joal lies on the mainland, while Fadiouth, linked by a bridge, lies on an island of clam shells, which are also used in local architecture and crafts. The village has no motorised transport evidenced by the sign on entering. It has large Christian and Muslim populations with cemeteries on another shell island. Another attraction is granaries on stilts in the water. The population of the commune in 2013 was some 46,000.

A Visit to Joal and Fadiout in Senegal

Fadiout is a town built upon centuries of discarded oyster shells. There are two islands here. One was used as a grainery; the other as a cemetery. Joal, the birthplace of Leopold Senghor, is a fishing village that provides tourist services to those visiting Fadiout.

Joal-Fadiouth est une commune du Sénégal située à l'extrémité de la Petite-Côte, au sud-est de Dakar.

Elle réunit en réalité deux villages, Joal – le plus gros –, établi sur le littoral, et Fadiouth – le plus visité –, une île artificielle constituée d'amoncellements de coquillages et reliée à la côte par un pont de bois.
