Kamakura (Japan) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Kamakura in Japan.
South of Tokyo, on the island Honshu, is the seaport of Kamakura, Japan’s ancient seat of government and is where Shogun Yoritomo, of the Minamoto Clan, left the courtly life of Kyoto in 1192 and built numerous temples and shrines. The Tokei Ji Temple was where women lived as nuns following the death of their husband. The teaching of Zen, imported from China, filled large areas of both cultural and social life. A bridge over a pond leads to the Jochi-Ji Temple that was built within a cypress forest and is one of the five famous temples of Kamakura. Founded in 1282, the Engaku-Ji Monastery teaches the priesthood right up to the present day. Its buildings are typical of Zen design, such as the abbot's residence, sub-temples and tea houses. Within the main hall, Hokan Shaka Nyorai is worshipped. In Japan, the historic Buddha is either seated, standing or prone. Kencho-Ji is the most important of the five Zen monasteries of Kamakura and has been conserved in its original form and function. The second oldest bell in the city, cast in 1255, is one of the temple’s treasures. The buildings are located within a narrow valley, surrounded by wooded slopes where the silence of Zen is palpable. The decline of the region’s rulers was accompanied by violent struggles during which the city was largely destroyed and subsequently returned to being a fishing village.

Jochiji Temple, Kamakura | A Taste of Japan #17
A Taste of Japan #17 - Jochiji Temple, Kamakura
After visiting Tokeiji, we went to Jochiji Temple in Kamakura. Only 100 years ago, it was rundown, and in terrible condition. Most of the temple is newer construction. It is number 4 of the 5 major Zen Buddhist temples in Kamakura. It is located south of Kita-Kamakura station. At Jochiji Temple, you can rub Hotei's belly and finger. Hotei is the god of happiness.

Not so touristy KAMAKURA TEMPLES | Quiet Kamakura
I decided to go to Kamakura to visit some small temples in the area. They are way less crowded and just as beautiful. So I walked all morning to visit them! We went to Engakugi Temple, Jochiji Temple and Kaizoji Temple before I got too tired from hills and stairs (as well as dealing with a child in tow. lol).
Engakugi is well known, but not to foreign tourist. It's also one of the bigger temples in Kamakura (just not at a main station).
Jochiji Temple is a very nice place that is very quaint.
Kaizoji Temple is a very long walk up a rather large hill and in hot weather. I loved how quiet it was because it's no where near anything lol. I could see lot of locals going there for the New Year prayers.
