Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur, Rajasthan
Mehrangarh Fort, located in Jodhpur, Rajasthan is one of the largest forts in India.
Mehrangarh Fort stands a hundred feet in splendor on a perpendicular cliff, four hundred feet above the sky line of Jodhpur. Burnished red sand stone, imposing, invincible and yet with a strange haunting beauty that beckons . Much has been written about the Citadel of the Sun, for truly, it is one of the most impressive in all Rajasthan. So colossal are its proportions that Rudyard Kipling called it “ the work of giants”. Today, it is acknowledged as one of the best preserved fort in India.
The fort is situated 400 feet (122 m) above the city and is enclosed by imposing thick walls. Inside its boundaries there are several palaces known for their intricate carvings and expansive courtyards. A winding road leads to and from the city below. The imprints of cannonball hits by attacking armies of Jaipur can still be seen on the second gate. To the left of the fort is the chhatri of Kirat Singh Soda, a soldier who fell on the spot defending the Mehrangarh fort.
There are seven gates, which include Jayapol (meaning 'victory'), built by Maharaja Man Singh to commemorate his victories over Jaipur and Bikaner armies. Fattehpol (also meaning 'victory') gate was built by Maharaja Ajit Singh to mark the defeat of the Mughals. The palm imprints upon these still attract much attention even today.
The museum in the Mehrangarh fort is one of the most well-stocked museums in Rajasthan. In one section of the fort museum there is a selection of old royal palanquins, including the elaborate domed gilt Mahadol palanquin which was won in a battle from the Governor of Gujarat in 1730. The museum exhibits the heritage of the Rathores in arms, costumes, paintings and decorated period rooms.

People of Jodhpur India 2
■ INDIA, JODHPUR: After making my way through the maze that is Jodphur's old town and meeting some cool people on the way, I was finally at the foot of the imposing 15th century hilltop Mehrangarah fortress. I was almost at the goal for my Jodphur visit. But not before I'd gone through a very 'Indian' security check...

Jodhpur By Foot - Vlog 1
A lot to explore than you can imagine!
Traveling India: Jodhpur
Traveling India: Jodhpur, the blue city. Second largest city in Rajasthan, expect chaotic streets and beautiful views. The blue-washed buildings of old city Jodhpur with the warm red sandstone glow of Mehrangarh Fort, creates a surreal and mesmerizing experience. The views are especially brilliant at sunrise and sunset. Mehrangarh Fort is one of the largest, most well preserved forts in India.
Relaxing on the rooftops, you almost forget you're in a city. We were grateful to find our quiet little oasis at Singhvi's Haveli near the base of the fort. But as you get further away from the fort, navigating the narrow pathways and streets on foot becomes next to impossible. The combination of intense noise, constant honking, motorbikes, auto rickshaws, cars, cows, dogs, elephants, and burrows on the tiny streets doesn't leave much room for pedestrians. So while the old city would be ideal for walking, do be careful and if going further than 1k, consider going by auto rickshaw, as it will be safer.

Christine

Umaid Bhawan Palace Jodhpur
The Palace was built, between 1928 and 1943, for H.H. Maharaja Umaid Singh ji, Grand Father of our present Maharaja, who had benevolently commissioned a new palace in 1923 to replace Mehrangarh Fort as the symbol of a new Jodhpur and to give employment to the people of Marwar during the period's great droughts and famines.
Perched high above the desert capital of Jodhpur, Umaid Bhawan Palace is the last of the great palaces of India and one of the largest private residences in the world - set amidst 26 acres of lush gardens.
Named after Maharaja Umaid Singh, grandfather of the present Maharaja of Jodhpur, this golden - yellow sandstone monument was conceived on the grandest possible scale, in the fashionable Art Deco Style of that time. After 15 years in construction, the 347 - room palace was finally completed in 1943 - and has served as the principal residence of the Jodhpur royal family since.
Designed by renowned Edwardian architect Henry Lanchester, the palace is a blend of eastern and western architectural influences. Its majestic 105 - foot high cupola is influenced by the Renaissance, while the towers draw inspiration from Rajput tradition. The lavish interiors with gilt furniture and elegant artwork follow the Art Deco style, complemented by the exotic murals of the self-exiled Polish artist Stefan Norblin. Palace Descriptors:
The magnificent Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur one of the world's largest private residences is a golden hued desert sandstone monument set amidst acres of verdant gardens. An imitable tribute to art deco, the Palace has in its luxurious fold 64 rooms and suites. Stroll through the private museum, test your skills on the marbled squash courts or enjoy a game of billiards in the panelled recreation room. Take an exhilarating drive through the enchanting city of Jodhpur in a vintage car, accompanied by your royal butler. Stop beneath the starry night sky for a divine grilled feast accompanied by the music of the desert. Experience the art of India's ancient healing wisdom in the romantic new setting of the Taj Spa.

Rural life in India - We see a woman in colourful saree standing and children are nearby and earthen pots are place over tyres, and cycle is place near a brick walls, and horse is grazing on, a woman carrying water on earthen pot walking by, and children are playing in the dirt.....
Jodhpur is the second largest city in the Indian state of Rajasthan. After its population crossed a million, it has been declared as the second 'Metropolitan City' of Rajasthan. It was formerly the seat of a princely state of the same name, the capital of the kingdom known as Marwar. Jodhpur is a popular tourist destination, featuring many palaces, forts and temples, set in the stark landscape of the Thar desert.
The city is known as the Sun City for the bright, sunny weather it enjoys all the year round. It is also referred to as the Blue City due to the vivid blue-painted houses around the Mehrangarh Fort. The old city circles the fort and is bounded by a wall with several gates. However, the city has expanded greatly outside the wall over the past several decades. Jodhpur lies near the geographic centre of Rajasthan state, which makes it a convenient base for travel in a region much frequented by tourists. Jodhpur topped the Lonely Planet's list of most extraordinary place to stay in 2014.

Jodhpur City Guide | India Travel Video in Rajasthan
Join us as we visit Jodhpur in this city travel guide covering the best things to do in the 'Blue City' of Rajasthan, India. Our travel video in Rajasthan (राजस्थान ਰਾਜਸਥਾਨ) covering the 'sun city' focusses on visiting Mehrangarh Fort (मेहरानगढ़ का दुर्ग) for some incredible views of the city and heading over to the Sardar Market (सरदार बाजार) nearby the Ghanta Ghar clock tower of Rajasthan where you can find great places to shop and grab Rajasthani cuisine (राजस्थानी खाना) and a saffron lassi. We especially recommend Jhankar restaurant where we had the best Rajasthani Thali (थाली) and regular Thali during our entire India travels. Jodhpur (जोधपुर) is also worth exploring on foot or tuk-tuk where you can just get lost down the myriad of colorful alleys. For dinner we suggest rooftop views at a restaurant where you can clearly see Mehrangarh Fort (मेहरानगढ़ का दुर्ग) lit up at night. It is just as spectacular by night as it is by day.
Things to do in Jodhpur Travel Guide:
1) Mehrangarh Fort (मेहरानगढ़ का दुर्ग) for incredible views of Jodphur
2) Mehrangarh Fort (मेहरानगढ़ का दुर्ग) for souvenir shopping, lunch and visiting museums
3) Autorickshaw ride around Jodhpur to really experience 'The Blue City'
4) Rajasthani cuisine (राजस्थानी खाना) ordering Rajasthani Thali (थाली) and saffron lassi (लस्सी)

Jodhpur City Guide | India Travel Series in Rajasthan Video Transcript:
Our first stop in Jodhpur was Mehrangarh Fort, which is one of the biggest forts in India. The fort sits on a rocky hill overlooking the city and it pretty much dominates the skyline with its imposing walls. Admission to the fort itself is free, but if you’ve come all the way here, you’ll want to pay the admission to visit the palaces which now act as a museum.
Within the fort (मेहरानगढ़ का दुर्ग) you can also visit the ramparts, see the old cannons, and get some overhead views of the city which will quickly help you realize why Jodhpur (जोधपुर) is nicknamed the Blue City.
Then, after all that food and drink, it was finally time to get lost in the blue maze that is Jodhpur.
So right now we have ended up at the Sardar Market (सरदार बाजार) just around the clock tower (Ghanta Ghar). And I would say this is both a local market and a tourist market. You can get produce and like everyday things. Yeah, you see a lot of everyday like market stalls but you also see some more ones that are geared for tourists such as the ones where you can souvenirs, carpets and saris.
Jhankar in Jodhpur (जोधपुर). Oh, it was so good Actually it was one of the best meals we've had in India so far. Yeah. So we are heading back there for dinner. And it is all about Thali (थाली) tonight. We are going to get an original Thali (थाली) and a Rajasthani Thali (राजस्थानी खाना). Because we are in Rajasthan (राजस्थान ਰਾਜਸਥਾਨ) and they have a special Thali so we can't wait to try that out. Now it is off to find a little tuk-tuk. Alright, lead the way. Lead the way.
And that’s it for Jodhpur! Our two-day visit was short and sweet, but it was enough to get a taste of what the city is all about.
So that is a wrap from Jodhpur (जोधपुर). So we had a really good time in the Blue City. Um, it was only two days but I felt like we did quite a bit. Did you enjoy it? Yeah, the fort (मेहरानगढ़ का दुर्ग) was magnificent and the blue city was all it was supposed to be. Yes, so now we're moving on to Jaipur. We're just waiting at the train station. So we're going to catch our train. It is about a 6 hour journey. So relatively not too long but uh yeah can't wait to update you when we get there. Ciao for now.
This is part of our Travel in India video series showcasing Indian food, Indian culture and Indian cuisine.

In association with INTACH, Jodhpur
A wonderful initiative by His Highness Maharaja Gaj Singh Ji II of Jodhpur, Governing Council of the Indian National Trust for Art and Culture Heritage (INTACH) for organising the Jodhpur Heritage Walk in association with RAMG (Jodhpur).
We delved into the fantastic history that surrounds our beautiful Jodhpur. Experienced guides took RAMG members on foot through the Old City to discovered this amazing Blue City. This Heritage Walk was a fascinating journey through the city's history and architecture.
India Vlog: Shopping in Jodhpur! Clock Tower, Sardar Market!

instagram.com/timandglo
We ventured further into Rajasthan Province by taking the train from Jaipur to Jodhpur. We stayed at The Blue House, a quaint guesthouse housed in a 500-year-old Haveli near the Clock Tower and Sardar Market.
Since arriving in India five days prior, this was our first chance to sleep in...so we took advantage. We slept in until 10:00 followed by breakfast at the Blue House's rooftop cafe. We highly recommend their banana and honey porridge as well as Nutella crepes! Breakfast is not included in the room rate, but it's very affordable. The cafe is open air and has a nice day and night view of Merangarh Fort.
We decided to postpone a visit to the Fort - the city's top tourist attraction - until the following day. We spent the rest of the day exploring Sardar Market, shopping for textiles, tea, curry powders, and other items.
Jodhpur is especially known for its textiles - scarves, wall hangings, table runners, etc. But be careful because there are a lot of unscrupulous salesmen who will try to dupe the unknowing tourist. Be especially cautious of Maharani Textiles & Handicrafts as well as Baba Art Emporium.
Maharani is located less than five minutes on foot from The Blue House. This is the first shop we visited based on the recommendation of a man who stopped us just outside of Blue House claiming to recognize us from the guesthouse. He said he's a cook there; he was lying. He led us to Maharani in the hopes - as we later found out - that we would make a big purchase, from which he could earn up to a 30% commission. Maharani has terrible reviews on TripAdvisor primarily because they use a lot of tall tales - albeit some based on truth - to overcharge customers for their textiles.
Baba Art is located inside the market and claims to be a government textile shop, which we were later told is not a unique business category because all legal businesses are required to register with the government. They use this ruse to convince tourists that Baba Art offers bargain prices that are backed by their special standing with the government. They also like to benchmark their prices against Maharani, generally offering a 30% discount.
It's true that both shops offer very unique, high quality items. The key is to enter these shops independently without being led there by guides, hotel staff, etc. who will receive commission on your purchase, thereby increasing the cost of each item by about 30%. And as with all bargaining, be sure to have a price in mind that you're comfortable paying. As long as you have no regrets about the final price, you won't feel cheated and disappointed. Across two visits on two separate days, Baba Art slashed the price of six items we set aside from $635 to $200! In the end we decided not to buy anything at all because the negotiation process was dishonest and left us feeling cheated.
The market is also a great place to buy spices and tea! We recommend Mohanlal Verhomal M.V. Spices, which has two locations (one inside the market near Baba Art Emporium and the other just outside the market). M.V. is run by three sisters who took over after their father passed away. They also offer cooking classes and have been featured in Lonely Planet!
For lunch or dinner, we recommend Indique Restaurant on the rooftop of Pal Haveli Hotel just outside Sardar Market. They definitely have the best views! You can see Merangarh Fort as well as get a bird's eye view of the Clock Tower and market. The food is also delicious!
For dinner we drove to a restaurant called On the Rocks. The ambiance was lovely - very romantic. But the food was sub-par.
Many thanks for watching!! And happy travels!!
