Exploring the Japanese Countryside [Okinoshima Island] Ft. MaoMao TV & Tokidoki Traveller
We explored Okinoshima or Oki Island, which is an island north of Sakaiminato in Tottori Prefecture!
It is a group of four islands, located 50 km to the north of Shimane Prefecture in the Sea of Japan. Among four islands, some are separated from the Japanese Islands while some are connected with the Japanese Islands for hundreds of thousands of years, which makes the unique ecosystem and scenes related its geographical condition. The four islands are Dogo Island, and another three islands comprise Dozen and each island has its unique feature with cliffs connected with one another. All these are worth seeing even by ship and plane in transit on the way. Yet, the sea is stormy in winter, not suitable for sightseeing.
How to get there:
The islands can be accessed by air or sea.Travel by sea to the islands is serviced by the Oki Kisen Line. Ferries depart from Sakai-minato Port in Tottori Prefecture, and Shichirui Port in Shimane Prefecture. Both of these ports are a 40 minute bus ride from Matsue Station in Shimane Prefecture. Travel between the Dozen Islands is serviced by the Oki Dozen Islands Inter-island Ferry.
What to do there:
Yao-sugi & Chichi-sugi There are many giant Japanese cedar trees on Dogo Island. The most well-known are the three giant Japanese cedar trees: Yao-sugi, Chichi-sugi and Kabura-sugi. In addition to these trees, there are many natural Japanese cedar forests with trees that are hundreds of years old, such as at the base of Washigamine Ridge. These trees are found in such a variety of shapes that you might not believe they are the same species.
Dankyo Waterfall A mysterious waterfall where you can observe two waterfalls running down from two sides of a shrine on a rock cliff.
Jodogaura Shore Line A beautiful shore line where you can see the blue sea contrasted to the rock cliff making for an awesome view.
