Dad Joe James, 83, lost a battle with bone cancer in Jamaica, 5,000 miles from the former goalkeeper’s home in Britain. Ex-Liverpool and England legend David, 49, was unveiled as one of the contestants in the new season of Strictly Come Dancing last weekend. Fans watched him being paired with pro dancer Nadyia Bychkova and taking part in the mass group routine before going off to start training for real. And his stepmum Joy Burke, speaking to the Sunday People from Jamaica, said: “His dad would have been so proud. I’m rooting for him and will watch it.” Joy, 73, revealed that Joe’s dying wish was to see David meet up with his siblings for one big last get-together. At her home in Rio Bueno, in the Trelawny district of the Caribbean island’s north coast, she said: “We were hoping to have a family reunion. Before Joe died we were planning it. We wanted to arrange all of the siblings to meet in America – but it didn’t happen.” Accident David was one of eight siblings, second youngest of a family of six brothers and two sisters. Joy said that when he was two his parents split and his mother Sue took him and youngest brother Gilbert, who was just a year old, to England. Joy also revealed how the family had suffered tragedy and heartache over the years. David’s older brother Franz was hit by a car when he was just 13 and now suffers from brain stem injury. He was sent to the UK in his 20s and now lives in a bungalow. Joy recalled: “I was driving and another gentleman pulled out. Franz was unconscious in the hospital for six months. “He was sent over to England to get better treatment. It was very hard.” David was one of Britain’s most famous footballers with an army of fans when he played for top clubs. His career was launched at Watford but he is best known for his seven years at Liverpool in the 1990s, during which he made 214 appearances. He played for several other big clubs including Aston Villa, West Ham and Manchester City and earned £20million – but ended up bankrupt in 2014. But his biggest fan, his dad, barely saw him play. Joy, who runs an art gallery she set up with Joe, recalled: “We went to England when David was 19 and at Watford. From then, though we weren’t in touch, we still followed his career. “We watched him once on TV when he went to Liverpool and listened to games on the radio. We framed an article in the gallery and people would come past all the time.” Recalling contact she and Joe had with David, Joy said: “He came with his children to Jamaica to see us about 17 years ago. He bought me a bottle of Chanel
