Jogakura Bridge - Hakkoda
Jogakura Bridge's autumn view. From the 122 metre bridge are views of Hakkoda's mountains, tree covered hills, Aomori City and a winding river. Jogakura Bridge is accessible from Aomori station by bus or by car. The view of the fiery orange hills against a backdrop of mountains and blue skies is magnificent.

Visiting Takeru's family in AOMORI for OBON | お盆のために青森に帰省
Every year in the middle of August we go back to Aomori to visit Takeru’s family for Obon. What I like the most about Aomori is just driving through the endless long rice fields surrounded by dark green forests because, you might know or not, Aomori actually means ‘green/blue forest’.毎年８月中旬はお盆のためにたけちゃんの故郷、青森に帰省します。私が青森で好きなことは森に囲まれた田園をドライブすることです。ご存じかと思いますが、青森は青い森を意味します。

Oirase Stream is a picturesque mountain stream in Aomori Prefecture that is one of Japan's most famous and popular autumn colors destinations. The stream flows along the floor of the Oirase Gorge, winding among trees which, while a lush green in spring and summer, turn brilliant shades of red, yellow and orange from late October through early November. Over a dozen waterfalls cascade down into the stream all along its length from the walls of the gorge.

Let’s Go! Aomori City and Hakkoda
Hakkoda Mountains or Hakkoda-san (八甲田山) and the surrounding areas are famous in the Tohoku region for being one of the best sightseeing locations for the autumn leaves, or koyo (紅葉). When we arrived in mid-October, the leaves on Hakkoda were starting to change color but the surrounding areas at the lower elevations were still mostly green. Similar to cherry blossom season, you have to be lucky with timing and weather to see the autumn leaves at their peak color without them falling from the trees. The colors could have been a deeper orange on the mountains so I will be sure to return to this area again to see it at its best.

Aomori City is located only a few hours North of Sendai via bullet train. To get to Hakkoda-san, you can take public transit (JR East) buses that depart from Aomori Station and pass through Shin-Aomori Station that take you directly to the base of the Hakkoda Ropeway in about one hour. These buses can also take you to Lake Towada and Oirase Stream which are also popular destinations for autumn leaves. Lake Towada offers boat rides that can take you around Towadako or Towadako to Nenokuchi.
The Let's Go Series was produced to inspire my students to get outside and explore. The premise is that the majority of the dialogue is with basic English so that junior high school students learning English as a second language can follow along.

青森県の奥入瀬渓流の紅葉撮影に行ってきました。天気もよく、紅葉も見頃で最高でした。
Oirase Stream is a picturesque mountain stream in Aomori Prefecture that is one of Japan's most famous and popular autumn colors destinations. The stream flows along the floor of the Oirase Gorge, winding among trees which, while a lush green in spring and summer, turn brilliant shades of red, yellow and orange from late October through early November. Over a dozen waterfalls cascade down into the stream all along its length from the walls of the gorge.
Oirase Stream is the only outlet draining Lake Towada. It starts at Nenokuchi where there is a bus stop and a boat pier with connections to nearby Yasumiya Town. An easy-to-walk hiking trail leads along the most scenic, upper passage of the stream between Nenokuchi and Ishigedo, with many bridges, waterfalls and bus stops along the way. The trail is about 9 kilometers long and takes about 2.5 hours to walk one way.
