SOUTH AFRICA: MAX THE GORILLA RETURNS TO JOHANNESBURG ZOO

Max the gorilla returned to hero's welcome at Johannesburg Zoo on Tuesday after being shot by a gunman who was fleeing police.
The 26 year old ape suffered two gunshot wounds while trying to defend his mate, Malisa.
Zoo officials say Max is healing well, but he'll be on antibiotics for 10 days.
Seeming none the worse for wear, Max the gorilla returned home on Tuesday to his compound at Johannesburg Zoo, and to his mate Malisa.
It was the first time since Max's shooting last Friday that Malisa, severely traumatised by the incident, had ventured out into the open.
Max's attacker was being pursued by the police when he leaped into the gorilla's enclosure and came face-to face with 180-kilogram (400-pound) Max.
The gunman shot Max twice before being shot and wounded by the police, but Max bit back, sinking his teeth into two policemen.
The gunman and policemen were rushed to Johannesburg's Garden City Clinic, Max was shot with a tranquilliser dart and taken to the zoo's infirmary.
Sergeant Robert Shabalala, one of the policemen bitten by the 26-year-old gorilla, said he thought he was a dead man.

Max sat on Constable Shabalala when he tried to escape and bit him or the arms and buttocks.
Although Shabalala says he'll never forget the terror, Max appears to have put the past behind him.
His injuries, a bullet wound in the shoulder and a swollen chin are healing well.
Keeper Jacqui Thompson says he had a narrow escape.

Max is a lot better. He still has the bullet in his shoulder, but the wound has healed up very nicely and Malisa's a lot less stressed and they're both out in the enclosure for the first time today and they're foraging around and Max has sort of declared it his territory again and they're both very well.

SOUTH AFRICA: JOHANNESBURG ZOO: NEW LION ENCLOSURE

It's not exactly born free.
But for Johannesburg Zoo's lions it is certainly a step up.
For the first time ever, different breeds of lion are being kept together in one enclosure.
And it is certainly a far cry from their previously cramped conditions.
The new lion enclosure for the Zoo's three families of tawny and white lions was officially opened ,witnessed by enthusiastic visitors.
It's a world first that different breeds of lions can roam in the same areas.
Previously they were separated by walls and fences.
The new enclosure boasts three separate islands.
Water moats and landscaping features provide the lions with a larger and more natural environment.
The new enclosures cost just under one million (M) dollars U-S.
The constructions were paid for by South Africa's Anglo Gold company, the world's largest gold producer.
The head of the zoo is very happy with the new lions' habitat and says it will also help the conservation programs.

Yes, 3 lion families. They have been living in very sub standard facilities, really, really old and unacceptable in today's standards. Anglo Gold has given us an opportunity to give them very nice facilities. Each lion family has got its own little island and they will be able, obviously, to enjoy themselves and we'll be able to do valuable work in those facilities.

The Zoo is the home of brown and the very rare white lions.
The new enclosures are separated from each other by water and small fences.
This set up makes it indeed a unique lion habitat worldwide.
The manager of the animal collections is confident the new lion areas will help the Zoo's efforts to secure the future of the unique gene pool of the white lions.

To my knowledge it's the only one in the world that has this concept. It's a fairly new one, there's obvious risk to it. We'll have to manage it very closely in the beginning stages to monitor the behaviour of the lions. We've got now a different part where there is now 2 fully grown male lions, 25 to 30 meters apart.

The new lion enclosures will also broaden the scope of the Zoo's educational programmes.

SOUTH AFRICA: JOHANNESBURG ZOO HOLDS PARTY FOR MAX THE GORILLA

Johannesburg Zoo held a party for its hero, Max the gorilla, to celebrate his bravery after he was shot by a gunman.
Presents and get well messages have been flooding in for Max who's now well on the way to full recovery.
Max was shot three times when he attacked an armed robber who jumped into his enclosure to evade capture.
Max won the hearts of animal lovers all over the world when he tackled a robber who had jumped into his enclosure to escape the police.
He was shot three times with a .38 special.
The Zoo has since received enquiries from animal lovers from countries including Fiji, Bermuda, the United States, England, Japan and Sweden.
Zoo wardens believe Max's instincts to protect himself and his mate Lisa were sparked by the gunman's entrance into the enclosure.
The man fired three shots at Max, but these only enraged the gorilla further.
The suspect was saved from severe injury by a policeman who turned a fire extinguisher on Max. In the struggle, the policeman was also injured.
The overworked and underpaid police force, which is regularly under fire due to their low arrest rate, were grateful for Max's help.

'They've actually signed Max up as a police reservist. The only condition that we made was that he be provided with bullet protection, so the police went ahead and actually made us a vest.

Souvenirs of Max are already planned to cash in on Gorilla mania: everything from Max T-shirts and posters to Max badges and even ice cream.
Fans of the 400-pound animal are pleased that he has recovered from his ordeal.
Besides the trauma of the events, Max is left with one bullet still lodged in his body.

Visiting the Johannesburg Zoo
Sunday, October 1st was International Day of the Older Persons, and Johannesburg Zoo invited all millennials and their significant older person to join them at the Zoo, to test this latest South African invention.
My kids love the zoo, so we headed off to find out what this was all about. And yes, according to the kids, I was the Older Person.

Lory Park animal and Owl sanctuary is little haven one would not expect to find in the hustle and bustle between Johannesburg and Pretoria. Situtated in Midrand., it is a what many people like to call a boutique zoo, a place where animals can be appreciated up close, where human and animal interaction is welcomed, creating a personal and peaceful atmosphere.
It all started in the small town of Beaufort west in the Northern Cape where Edward Philippus Van Eck was born. Born as a first child into a family of animal lovers and a father who was an ardent and very successful pigeon racer, it was only natural that Eddy would grow up with a strong affinity for nature and animals. Eddy spent his youth mostly collecting pet creatures and cacti.
After finishing school in Beaufort West Eddy decided to move to Johannesburg, and from here it was his interest and being the leader of Cacti collections and competitive displays, that lead him to many travels overseas. Having a keen interest in, and a large collection of Parrots it also meant visiting zoos, sanctuaries and parks in many places of the world. It was there that Eddy found his inspiration to create a bird park in South Africa that would be similar to those in Europe like for instance Loro Parque in Tenerife. Eddy took the huge leap of retiring from his then successful construction company, Epeck Construction and taking on the new venture of creating a beautiful bird park in Midrand, which would have one of the largest collections of Parrots in the Southern Africa, it was also important for him to establish a sanctuary that would serve as a peaceful haven for the community, an educational environment for children and a breeding facility for endangered species.
Lory Park Animal and Owl Sancturay
After two years of hard work and dedication Lory Park was ready to open its gates in April 2000. The new little haven never came without its hardships, and it took some months before the name Lory Park was known and respected. Thirteen years ago Midrand was still reasonably unspoilt and consisted of much grassland which was still inhabited by animals such as Grass owls , Marsh owls, Barn owls and Spotted Eagle owls as well as mammals such as Duiker, Caracals, Mongoose, Jackals, hedgehogs and many more. It was from here on that Midrand started exploding into one of the fastest growing industrial and corporate areas in South Africa, unfortunately with this came more roads, buildings and a need for housing and development, and this in turn had a very negative effect on the fauna and flora and of course the wildlife. It was then that many people started bringing injured and trapped animals to Lory Park, and often the case being where Eddy would also have to go and collect potentially dangerous animals such as snakes, who previously lived unnoticed and were now deemed vermin due to human encroachment. Some of these animals were releasable in safe areas, but most were severely injured due to cars, electric fences, human aggression, and electricity lines, and could never be released. They were the animals that needed a safe haven where they could live out their lives in peace with love and care, and this is where Lory Park soon started becoming a sanctuary to all, and not only a bird park.
It was at this point that Eddy realized the need for expansion and a greater contribution to educating the community on conservation. During these efforts, Eddy also built a good rapport with nature conservation, as well as various welfare organisations and thus was asked to home many confiscated and abused animals. From there on Lory park is where it is today, an internationally acclaimed zoo which has established a successful co ordinance of animal care, education and community recreation with the highest standards. Through his passion and love, for animals and nature Eddy has created a beautiful haven in the middle of the concrete jungle for animals and humans to share, a place where human and animal souls may meet and go into the future together.
