Blessings in Plenty from John Dean
A Life and Park History
The story of John Dean, one of the true pioneers of British Columbia, is one of those sagas that give the lie to those who believe Canada’s history to be dull. This man set a superb example of responsible citizenship. He was the first to stand up for urban planning, and was the first to donate a large chunk of his private land to create a major provincial park. J Wasn’t Alone
British Columbia’s John Dean, born 1850, England – Victoria pioneer, 1884 – had risen to his position through fine character, hard work and the strength of his own spirit. He was a contractor, civic leader, realtor, world traveler, and was the first to donate land for a provincial park. Dean passed away in 1943, age 92. He’ll always standout as a prominent pioneer of the province. This story explores his personal essence… He loved the time he’d spent at Illahie: the lush of June, the hum of the August forest, the brand new October mists, his oil lanterns, tools, firewood, spring water, the birds, fresh food from the garden, and the best of recorded music. – 2012
Volume V
John Dean’s Time
Pioneer British Columbia Revealed Through Diaries and Images
John Dean (1850-1943) was a remarkable British Columbian and civic leader who left a lasting legacy to the Victoria area, which he owned for 44 years: John Dean Provincial Park. This Mount Newton / LAUWELNEW preserve on the Saanich Peninsula was the first park donated to the province of British Columbia in 1921.
This book presents four and a half particularly important years in the life of John Dean, as chronicled in the diaries that he maintained throughout his life. This period spans his 1884 arrival in Victoria, and his first years within British Columbia. The diaries provide intimate insights into life in those years, as well as describing his movements throughout the province.
This book is also a compilation of all the extent images known to have belonged to Dean: photographs, art, maps and postcards. They represent the people, places and experiences John Dean most valued and wished to remember; and they demonstrate the breadth of his interests and experiences. The images presented here offer fascinating glimpses of earlier times on Vancouver Island, the Great War, Dean’s extensive world travels, and his pioneer life at Illahie on Mount Newton.
During his long and richly varied life, John Dean developed a strong personal philosophy about what matters; which shines from his diaries and collected images as much as it does from the mountaintop park he left for posterity. – 2015

Hiking in Dean Park - Feb 2017
Out for a hike with my friend in Dean Park, near Sidney B.C., after a few days of unusual snowfall for the area. The trees were just amazing, it reminded me of being back in Northern Ontario at the cottage in winter when I was a kid!

Walking tour of SIDNEY by the sea, BC, Canada.
Sidney is a town located at the northern end of the Saanich Peninsula, on Vancouver Island in the Canadian province of British Columbia. It is one of the 13 Greater Victoria municipalities. It has a population of approximately 11,583. Sidney is located just east of Victoria International Airport, and about 6 km south of BC Ferries' Swartz Bay Terminal. The town is also the only Canadian port-of-call in the Washington State Ferries system, with ferries running from Sidney to the San Juan Islands and Anacortes. Sidney is located along Highway 17, which bisects the town from north to south. It is generally considered part of the Victoria metropolitan area.
The town west of Highway 17 (also called Patricia Bay Highway) has a mixture of single-family residences and light industry. The majority of the town is located east of Highway 17. The island-studded Haro Strait, part of the Salish Sea forms Sidney's eastern boundary. There is a large boating and marine industry in the area, ranging from marinas to boatbuilders and marine suppliers.
Sidney's main attraction is its position on the Salish Sea. Sidney-by-the-Sea is the gateway to the southern Gulf Islands National Park Reserve, and is a popular eco-tourist destination, with whale-watching, bird-watching, kayaking and scuba-diving. It is home to the new Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre. Shoal Harbour Migratory Bird Sanctuary is located within Sidney and the adjoining Sidney Channel Important Bird Area, an internationally recognized site important to a variety of seabirds and waterfowl.
Sidney has its own local history museum, the Sidney Museum and Archives, which features displays about the history of the surrounding Peninsula as well as numerous temporary exhibits. As home to the Victoria International Airport Sidney also hosts the British Columbia Aviation Museum which features displays, artifacts, restored historical aircraft and an ongoing vintage aircraft restoration workshop.
During the summer, Sidney hosts a very popular street market on Thursday evenings on the main street (Beacon). Sidney days is another popular event that occurs at the beginning of July. To celebrate, Sidney has a parade, a popular build-a-boat contest, a small fair and fireworks in the evening. In the winter, Sidney has a holiday parade as well as a lighted sailpast boat parade. Sidney has many dining places including Greek, Thai, Chinese, Japanese, and west-coast restaurants. Sidney has a well maintained boat ramp for trailerable boats with a dock for queuing up, it is located next to the Washington state ferry terminal.
