Illinois Adventure #1703 John Deere Historic Site
In 1836, John Deere, a blacksmith recently transplanted from Vermont, set up shop in the small Rock River town of Grand Detour, Illinois. Deere, who was enterprising and innovative, met many disheartened farmers who were discouraged by their efforts to cultivate the sticky Midwestern soil.
Today, visitors to the John Deere Historic Site can watch a blacksmith at work in a replica of the blacksmith's shop where John Deere made that historic plow. The site also features the home John Deere built, a gift shop, and an archaeological exhibit that shows the site of John Deere's original blacksmith shop.
John Deere Pavilion Equipment Move Time-Lapse
The John Deere Pavilion, Deere & Company’s free visitor center in downtown Moline, Illinois, routinely updates its displays and exhibits to keep material fresh and to keep guests returning. The facility recently updated several pieces of its equipment models on display. Most of the modern forestry, construction and agriculture equipment was replaced with new models. This time-lapse video shows the careful planning and choreography that goes into a simple exchange of machinery. Very Old Farm Machinery In Operation
Both of my parents were involved with agriculture and I grew up listening to their stories of how things used to get done. At The Rock River Thresheree I could actually see some of those things with my own eyes! I recorded some clips of some really old gas tractors pulling an array of harvest gear, and I also caught a bunch of clips showing how steam tractors can plow a large field. Please enjoy this living history!
(The Rock River Thresheree has been an annual; event since 1956. I would describe the Thresheree as a type of living history museum where an incredible amount of exhibits are often portable and interactive. Steam machinery that could easily be one hundred years old is seen throughout the large fairgrounhds which are located just south of Edgerton Wisconsin. There is an emphasis on agtriculture as seen by the large quantity of decades old farm tractors but there are also harvesting machines and many smaller engines. Other sights include the working steam train; The Rock River Cannonball, a sawmill powered by a steam tractor, and several large sheds that house incredibly huge stationary engines. Historic re-enactors host battle re-enactments and the occasional train robbery. However, the most dominant exhibit is probably the steam pile driver. When that machine is running everyone in the area can hear and feel it! I have been to the Thresheree many times uin the last fifty years and I would say that it is a worthwhile trip and will be enjoyed by all!)

Downtown Moline, Ill - Rock Island Train
This is an animated recreation of a Rock Island train passing through the 15th Street railroad crossing in Moline, Illinois. This neighborhood looked a lot different when I was a child in the early 1960s. My maternal grandmother ran a boarding house on the corner of 15th St. and 4th Ave., which is the intersection you are looking at. It was located on your left and somewhat behind you out of picture range. Today that building, along with the remaining others in that block were torn down and replaced with a parking lot. Also, a highway overpass (which is out of the picture range and also would be behind you) was built about the same time. The John Deere plant was located across the tracks, and to your left, out of the picture range. Today that plant serves as that company's pavilion.
When I last visited my grandmother in 1965, I would sit at the corner of 15th St. and 4th Ave., and watch as the Rock Island trains passed through the crossing. The railroad crossing back then had about 5 or 6 tracks, 4 or 5 of them belonging to the Rock Island Railroad. The remaining tracks I believe belonged to the then Burlington Route Railroad (Now Burlington Northern - Santa Fe)
Today, the Rock Island Railroad is, as far as I know, the only railroad in The United States that completely vanished, having no competitor to buy it or merge with it when it went bankrupt. The company ceased to exist as a railroad on June 1, 1984, but after many settlements, would resurface as the Chicago Pacific Corporation, a company that would eventually merge with the Maytag Corporation. As a result of the Rock Island's demise, the tracks that were used by the railroad at this crossing have been removed, and only one track, believed to belong to BNSF, remains.
I created an animation using Photoshop, for the sake of nostalgia, with the current picture of downtown Moline as a backdrop, of a Rock Island train passing through the neighborhood for the last time (albeit using the BNSF track). If you were born after 1980, you probably won't recognize many of the railroad companies depicted on the freight cars.
