President John F. Kennedy's Gravesite - Arlington National Cemetery
June 2016
The Eternal Flame
The eternal flame at the gravesite of President John F. Kennedy has been restored at Arlington Natio
The eternal flame at the gravesite of former President John F. Kennedy has been restored at Arlington National Cemetery.
On Tuesday, the cemetery transferred the flame from a temporary burner to the restored permanent eternal flame that is part of a memorial to the 35th president.
Repairs began in April to replace components of the eternal flame's burner. Contractors installed new gas and air lines, a new burner assembly and new drainage lines below the flame.
The work was supposed to be completed by late May. But the flame remained on a temporary burner through October. The temporary flame was visible to tourists during the project.
Officials said the repairs were needed after more than four decades of use. The cemetery says the new equipment will provide easier maintenance.

The John F. Kennedy Eternal Flame is a presidential memorial at the gravesite of former U.S. President John F. The present fixed site replaced the temporary grave and flame which were used during the President's funeral on November 25, 1963. Barack Obama and Bill Clinton lay wreath at John F Kennedy's grave
First Lady Michelle Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton joined the two presidents to place a wreath near the eternal flame that marks Kennedy's grave site.
President Obama and Mr Clinton placed their hands over their hearts as a bugler played taps near an American flag at half-staff.
Barack Obama made no public comments, but greeted Kennedy relatives, gathered to honour his legacy, ahead of the 50th anniversary of his assassination on Friday.
The daylong tribute began earlier at the White House, where Obama bestowed the Presidential Medal of Freedom on prominent Americans including Bill Clinton and Oprah Winfrey.
Kennedy established the modern version of the medal, but was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald in Dallas on November 22, 1963, two weeks before he planned to honour the inaugural group of recipients.
